Windows 7 vs Windows 8.1 vs Windows 10 in regard to games' FPS

I got a nice boost in 3DMark by going to windows 10 - Between 8-15% on graphics tests.

I'm going to try some other benchmarks and see if it's a general trend.

Edit - Just tried Heaven and I got an improvement of around 18% with my setup. Not bad for a free OS upgrade.

Ask me in 3 years when games support DX12. I tested 3DMark, Witcher 3and GTA V in both systems. Tbh there wasn't a huge difference in fps, but GTA V mostly looked better and ran smoother in 10. Maybe a gain of 5-10 fps if I'm feeling generous.

Vram load was down too, but heaps of RAM is used soI'm not sure where the advantages lies there.

Windows 10 is slightly better for gaming in my testing.

BF4 on low with a 5770 can maintain 60 fps @ 2048x1152.
Windows 7 could not do that even with overclocking this old card.

would like to confirm small fps increases on all my games, although i have heard some say witcher 3 suffered some hits to frame rate..
i dont know if i can say this is the OS because nvidia sneaked their new drivers in after my install so would be good to see the same set up running same drivers on 10 and 7.

Using DX11, there wouldn't be see noticeable difference but DX12 will see humongous improvements.

Zip, unless you have a dx12 card, have an optimized dx12 game, and a killer gaming box.... Wait 2 years, then it'll be worth it.

Actually it looks to me like performance is slightly lower (by an insignificant amount). I'll try to get an article out next week.

I've personally seen boosts to games even as old as DX9, seems like some of the CPU bottlenecks have been reduced.
Might be important to record/show CPU usage?

Others are describing it as less micro stuttering, which could be the correct explanation why it feels smoother, but isn't showing as FPS gains.

I've got 15-20 FPS gain on intense areas in TW3 (Hiearch Square for instance), everything maxed out except for hair (haven't gone hairy since W10). Mainly ~90FPS with vsync off, never dropping below 53. Pretty snappy. ~10% more CPU use in gaming (all cores, TW3, FC4).

My hardware is getting hotter, but my system's performing evidently better, so I don't really mind.

There's certainly overall API optimization. Proper DX12 games will do wonders. Also, gotta test GTA V soon.

P.S.: comparing with Windows 8.1, AMD Catalyst 15.6.

My NVIDIA cards seem to do slightly worse under 10, but given the state of the 10 drivers vs the 8 drivers, that's not surprising.

Yes... The CPU boost - multi-thread optimization I believe - is finally fueling my tri-fire. May the ancient goddesses bless the new API. Can't wait for actual DX12 games (I had a small sample of it with Mantle in Sniper Elite 3 and BF4, but things seem to be getting even smoother).

Fallout 3 doesn't work and I would get random DirecX crashes usually when closing games. On the plus side, Nvidia fixed hardware acceleration in Chrome. I'm back to 8.1 for the time being but performance wise there really wasn't much of a difference when things are working.

fallout 3 works great for me in windows 10, far better than 8.1 you need to intsall GFWL and the usual .ini 'crash fix' limiting it to two threads, and you're done.

For me it ran the same, except Worms Revolution ran like 10 times worse on Windows 10. It was so laggy it was driving me crazy.
