I am only planning on 1920x1080 for game playing, and I need to know if I will notice a difference if I go with a 8350 and 1866 ram? if I go intel what level? i5? i7? I get good fps now, but would like more if the investment isn't too much, as I'm retired now, fixed income, budgets all that, lol.

Your best bet if budget is really tight is probably scoring used parts. LGA1155 + i5 would here set you back about €100 and a bit. Or you go LGA1150 before 1151 comes out en masse and replaces them. I personally wouldn't bother with overclocking, but that's me. Another thing I wouldnt bother with is an i3. Either Pentium or i5 for me, but again thats me. :)

EDIT: Anandtech bench is a pretty good tool to compare stuff.

how much are you looking at? 200-300 dollars? motherboard+ram+ cpu?
It seem the ram you have @ 1600 are good enough you don't need upgrade your rams. 1600 and 1866 not much of notice in fps.

Could you tell us a bit more? Like your budget, which parts do you need, do you plan on overclocking, which games you play,…

Now to your questions:

- will I notice a difference if I go with a 8350 and 1866 ram?

Yes. The 8350 should provide a very nice performance jump. But at the same time the difference between 1600 and 1866 memory isn’t worth it. So unless you really want to upgrade to 16GB of memory don’t waste your money on it.

Note you will also need a new motherboard as the M4A87TD doesn't support the AM3+ chips.

- if I go intel what level?

Again we need more information. But overall it depends on your budget. For a budget gaming rig I would recommend an i5 4460 (about same price as 8350) and cheap B85 motherboard.

You are going to see the largest increase in performance by going to an i5. I would recommend a cheap new i5, or a used lga1155 i5 cpu as frick mention. Fricks advise is great.

thanks for the replies. also sorry the question is so vague. I've been using the passmark charts

to guide me on video card upgrades thru the last several years. looking at the pass mark charts, the 8350 has a higher score than the i5's, and higher scores are i7's and xenon processors, that's why I'm confused about the i5's being better than the 8350 for gaming.
my budget is limited, but pricing the i5 and the 8350 prices are about the same for the processor and motherboard. due to my eys sight I prefer to game at 1920x1080. games I'm currently playing include final fantasy 14, dragon age ,rome total war 2, starcraft 2,company of heros 2. these games run nicely, but I do get the occasional slowdown dropping under 60 fps in a couple of games.

so I guess I'm asking will the i5 or the 8350 give me the most noticeable bump in performance? thanks much, have a great day

Not a overclocked i5 and benchmarks can be missleading. Say goodbye to AMD cpus for now. No one that has made the switch has complained that they miss there 8350

You might want to start with sound quality..... I just looked at Newegg, and there are 310 socket 1150 motherboards, a truly mind boggling amount.
Also, think about replacing that Antec 300 with a much quieter case, such as the Fractal Design Define R5 , which is currently on sale.
BTW, are you near a Fry's or Micro Center?

thanks again for the replies. I'm just using air cooling for now, the cpu ive chosen is:

ive chosen is Intel Core i5-4690K Devil's Canyon Quad-Core 3.5GHz LGA 1150 BX80646I54690K Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 4600

the motherboard is

ASUS Z97-E LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard. with delivery it will be $378. I will be paying about $78 more for the intel cpu and motherboard over the 8350 amd.

I will be ordering the mb and cpu 9/16. any other cpu/mb combinations I am open to suggestion. at this point I'm not interested in over clocking, but in 2 years I know I will be, to squeeze another 6 months out of the build.

I'm looking forward to my first intel build, only had amd the last 20 years. I'm no fan boy, just until now the best bang for my money has always been amd until now, though I am still clueless how an i5 can out preform an 8350 in a game, especially when the 8350 runs as fast or faster and has 2000 more points in the passmark bench test, but by following the advise I get here I have always been more than happy with the results. have a great day.

you are getting information for a build you are planning to do in almost a year?

i5 is the best processor you can afford on medium price range, for gaming is all you need, compared, tested and many people can tell you that here, overclocking is not something that all people do when get new processor, but is important to have the option, unlocked Core processor for the win !

well the i5 is you best option, how much money do you have?

Get the devil's Canyon setup, a Gigabyte Board, and a decent cooler, you won't regret, in personal opinion I don’t like Asus boards, let me recommend you Gigabyte, MSI or Asrock,
Also … take advantage of lower prices on DDR3 kits, get 16GB you will need them on the future lad….

Gigabyte: gaming 5 / Z97x UD5 Black edition / z97 sniper
MSI: Krait Z97 sli / 98 millitary class
ASrock: extreme and Oc formula boards!

Coolermaster hyper 212Evo is the best bang for the buck cooler! take in consideration, also arctic cooling mx paste for the cooler,

Look at the micro center bundles here:

http://www.microcenter.com/site/brands/intel-processor-bundles.aspx

You can get an i7 for that much or get a i5 for cheaper
