Hey guys, so i decided to make a budget system mostly to play Dota 2 and Diablo 3 with a friend at his house and I am trying to overclock the CPU but i cant manage to raise even 100mhz.

The system won't even post, it tries to start and after several failed attempts at posting it tells me overclock failed. I've installed the latest F7 bios (cause I had F5 and it was not overclocking then either). Once I even had to clear CMOS to be able to boot.

All I did was raise multi from x32 to x33 (i've tried x35 and x40 also) but it just cant manage anything. I also tried to increase voltage to 1.2v but it didnt make any difference... Temps are around 30c idle, 45c load at stock... so no problem there.

Could it be a bad motherboard? Or did i miss something written in the few quick guides i read on the internet?

Hmm that is strange. Ok as a start try to manual key in stock values for the g3258 with the 32 multiplier and leaving bulk at 100mhz. Also key in the ram memory timings manually as well as the voltage. Set the cpu core at 1.060volts. See if that boots fine and try to stress test it.

Set the cpu core at 1.060volts. .

My CPU has a stock voltage of 1.075v by the way. And that seems quite high for a G3258 compared to other voltages i saw on the internet

That is fine. My g3258 required 1.060 when I first got it, it is higher now from wear. So could that work ok at stock with manual settings?

You are not using windows 10, right? It has a bug with the G3258 and OC.

I read about it. No im still on Win7 and I also checked that I dont have the problematic KB update. But still, my problem is mobo wont even POST with a change to CPU related stuff (XMP RAM profile for 2133mhz works well though)

That could be it. I also have problem being stable at stock with 4 ram stick. I solved mine by leaving the other ram related voltages at auto.

2133mhz is already pushing very far the g3258 memory controller which is rated at 1333mhz.
I could run my 1600 ram at overclock to 1866 but suddenly in a month that is not possible. I doubt it is my ram though because I turn it back to my ram stock at 1600. I just wonder if I have worn out my memory controller.

Isn't the G3258 IMC only approved for ddr-3 1333? You might be able to coax 1600 out of it, but I believe that may be your problem.

Try setting RAM at 1333 and see if you can overclock.

When you up the Cpu multiplier the ram will also overclock if set on auto

manually set ram to there setting 1333 if so
sound like ram does not like to overclock or incorrect setting once overclock cpu

Is the ram set correctly in dual channel? if so -
Channel A: DDR3_2, DDR3_4
Channel B: DDR3_1, DDR3_3

Yea, as the others stated that is probably your problem right there. The Ram controller is only approved for 1333mhz on the G3258 and even 1600mhz pushes it a bit from my experience with overclocking this chip. Had many failed overclock issues and even black screens caused by the memory being just at 1600mhz on some of the chips.

I would first bump the ram to default 1333mhz settings then try your overclocks. Once you get that stable, push the memory up to 1600mhz see what happens and then move on from there.

Does require F5 bios update Which Add Pentium AE G3258 CPU overclocking function

But you do have F7 Update which cant be downgraded so bios should be fine

I now managed to boot at 4Ghz with 1.2v and RAM at stock 1333mhz with ONLY ONE stick. However, out of the 10-15 minutes i've spent in the BIOS, the pc froze while i was tweaking the bios options and I had to CMOS clear to be able to restart.

While at 4Ghz and with 1 ram stick, I managed to get past the windows loading screen and I always crashed before getting to the desktop.

I managed to boot and use prime95 for a few minutes at 3.5Ghz with 4 Ram sticks at 2133mhz, thats the best I could do in the last 2 hours. I did increase Ring voltage and all the rest accordinly in all my attemps. I've used two different brands of ram, one corsair dominator platinum 4x4gb i had and one kingston hyperx 2x8GB but there is no difference - i can boot with mild OC only with a single stick.

Im thinking I just got a terrible CPU chip so I might sell it and buy a 4690k cause I cant rly game on a stock G3258, however I'm afraid if the motherboard is also bad and I wont be able to OC the 4690k either. Any opinions?

I would double check bios did update to F5 or F7
Make sure if using dual channel ram Channel A: DDR3_2, DDR3_4 / Channel B: DDR3_1, DDR3_3 ( Dimm 2+4 / Dimm 1+3)
Really doubt bad chip,
From a 3258 to 4690 Huge price difference

Set bios to default
up cpu multiplier by 5 to test
set ram from auto to 1333
leave all other settings
turn power saving setting off

G3258 chips are very finicky. There many variations between chip there many that ok, many bad and few very good ones that can take you to 4.7GHz. G3258 is not as binned as chips like the 4690k or the 4790k it is a huge gamble to expect good performance for G3258. At best with overclock you have a chip that is only on par with an i3 in multi-threading. 4GHz at 1.2V is not a good chip. My "average" chip reach 4.2GHz at 1.2V. Not that far from 4GHz. Currently I am running my cpu at 4.5Ghz at a high voltage of 1.380Volts. G3258 is sensitive to memory ram clock as well as the amount of rams populated in the slot. G3258 is a fun learning chip to test your overclocking skills and to learn more about overclocking but I would not trust depending on it. It take me weeks to 2 months to get a stable enough performance at high clocks.

I suggest you sell the G3258 and get an i5 to save you all the trouble.

Can you get a screenshot of your bios? I'll see if I can help you in the settings

so.... after tons of tweaking I got to the following results running stable prime95 for 15minutes under 60c

running on iGPU VGA cause i put the gpu back to my friends pc for now)
while running RAM 4x4gb modules at 2133mhz XMP profile (thought seems running 1333mhz does NOT improve my oc potential)
x40 CPU multiplier so 4ghz (x42 or x44 will not even allow me to boot and i need to clear CMOS)
LLC on high
x40 uncore (otherwise bsod on windows loading or stuck at boot and need to clear CMOS)
1.3v on cpu voltage (might manage to reduce that)
cpu ring (uncore) voltage 1.195 (might be able to reduce that)
system agent, analog and digital voltage to +0.195v

Questions:

1) Why the hell this motherboard needs a CMOS clear everytime instead of simply telling me overclock fail like on my Asus X79 mobo???? WHYY???? its so boring to have to clear CMOS every single time i do something wrong by using a screwdriver, cause ofc they didnt put a button for it. Is there something wrong with my motherboard or Asus brand is just SO MUCH BETTER?

2)Is LLC on high ok? I got option for turbo, i think turbo is +125%. Which option is better/safer?

3) It seems that only when CPU and uncore multipliers are the same i manage to boot. How high can uncore go before causing problems?

4) I managed these settings with all power-saving modes disabled (C1H, C3, C6/C7 and EIST) and then I managed to enable and still be stable. I will disable them again to try higher clocks but is there any really any problem if they are all disabled?

5) @MIRTAZAPINE what uncore you used for 4.2ghz clocks?

@Kaynar

1) Clearing would be CMOS often when the a cpu is close to its limits for an overclock and extremely unstable to be able to post. It would be strange that you have to clear CMOS when you only overclock a 100 or 200mhz from stock. I am not sure about your board, my board would try to restart itself a few times when it failed to post until it bring itself to stock setting. Or I just can simply press and hold on the reset button on my case, that would restore the board to stock setting without clearing CMOS.

2) I left my LLC on auto. The save range would be at 50% if you wanna concern about you chip having too high of voltage to compensate. I am not sure how is the long term use leaving it at auto or high high LLC.

3) It depends on your chip how high uncore can go. For my chip uncork can only goes as high as 4.2GHz but a voltage of 1.3 volt is required already. Pushing further is not quite possible.

4) Disabling power saving setting is important to be able to achieve higher clock without crashing. The only problem with c states disable is that you be using more power for your cpu and it would not idle at very low temperature as it don't reduce it's voltage and clock during idle. You will notice a higher temperature at idle. It is a trade off for the stability.

5) I don't focus on uncore frequency. I left it at stock at 3.2GHz even at 4.2GHz and also currently at 4.5GHz. I just do it this way so I don't want to increase processor heat for just very minor gains in performance raising the uncore and also have to deal with another variable to overclock.

I am not sure exactly what is system agent voltage, analog and the rest. I left it on auto as I don't exactly know how high or low I should go for them. All I know is their important to ensure you have enough power for your rams for some of it.

okey thanks for all the feedback, i'll keep experimenting, especially without C states, like good old times on my i7 930 :D

Here is a fun fact: my 4.2GHz OC was stable for 2 hours prime95 when i was using the onboard graphics, but when I put my friend's gtx970 again to keep testing, it couldnt last more than 1 minute on prime95 before BSOD lol...

Unfortunately i really cant go over 3.5ghz without upping uncore to the same level as cpu multi and i seem to hit uncore's limit at 4ghz. x41 and x42 uncore wont work even at 1.3v

@MIRTAZAPINE I read on guides that system agent, analog and digital safe max voltage is +0,2v (its even writen on intel's specs). Also, my asus mobo behaves like what you wrote, unfortunately it seems this gigabyte board gets easily stuck

Seems you changing you configuration too much stick to the hardware you want to use then configure as needed , impossible to help with out details

We would need your specs on PSU and Ram
Send a screenshot of Bios as people have stated to help check settings
To me you changing to many things in bios, your cpu should be able to overclock by just changing the multiplier and setting ram to its correct speed
Turbo - off ,
Power saving -off
EIST-DISABLE
C3, C6 States-DISABLE

Question

1.Does your pc run stable @ Stock? with an Gpu ( run Heaven benchmark a few passes and see if stable?
2.Is the Psu strong enough? make and model?
3.Ram - Have you tested ram ? Memtest
4.Max Cpu temp during Prim95?
5.Is the Psu still in good condition ... no caps blown or leaking?
5.Can your psu supply enough amps to the Gtx970 ?

@SnakeDoctor

I have only changed the options in the BIOS as I mention two posts above. cba to upload pics :D there is even an OC guide online for the G3258 using the same mobo model.
Tried 2 PSUs Corsair AX760 and AX860 and two sets of ram as I described in previous posts too (even used a single stick of each and it doesnt seem to affect anything)
If I disable Turbo, I will not be able to overclock at all - or at least thats how it was on my previous x79 mobo?
I've used both a GTX970 and a GTX Titan on this system.

1. yes the system is stable at stock, even at 3.5ghz and with an XMP profile at 2133mhz, i've run many tests at this speed for over 2 hours (combined prime95 and furmark)
2. The PSU i own is the AX860 and i also used my friend's AX760 to make sure its not a psu issue.
3. The ram is old, from my x79 system, it works fine, and my friend's ram is not new either they work fine.
4. max cpu temp at stock 45c and at 4.2ghz 65c with 1.35v (the thermal paste is rubbish im still waiting for my order of coolaboratory paste)

Anyway it seems I can keep 4ghz cpu clock with XMP profile enable and uncore at x40 with all energy savings enabled so I am half-satisfied. The cpu is good enough for the job - i was pulling over 60fps in Dota and Diablo with the gtx970. So now I will buy a gpu for this particular system (probably a gtx960?) and will see about further cpu overclocking in due time. I guess I will buy a better CPU down the road (next year).

For a stable overclock or if overclock high turbo should be switched off , you don't want the cpu boosing higher and lower mhz on an Overclock could cause pc unstable
For a 1155 chipset it should be off if Overclocking - eg. Pc(i5.2500k) idle @ 1.6ghz when make the pc work it boost to 3.7ghz
So if you overlocking you normally set the voltage to eg 1.35v now you dont want the cpu in turbo mode to , idle then boost , idle then boost ..... then bsod

just a few thoughts :)

you need to stop posting because every time you do you are wrong

1. leave the system agent and digital voltages alone no reason to change them at all ..
2. 1.190 is pretty high for a 4Ghz ring and you really don't need to overclock the ring anyway leave it at stock
3. leave the c-states and power saving enabled or on auto you don't need to disable them on modern platforms
4. you could try disabling XMP and configuring the ram timings manually
if you can't manage 4.4ghz @ 1.35v vcore then quiet simply thats all your chip is capable of
we call it the silicon lottery for a reason
try these settings if see if it works
cpu input voltage 1.750
cpu vcore 1.25v
cpu multi 44
cache multi 39
ring voltage 1.150
system voltages - stock
digital io/analog io -stock
blclk 100Mhz
blck dram ratio 100:100
ram timings (set manually to whatever the highest common denominator is for the sticks)
PLL Mode LC
filter PLL disabled
internal pll overvoltage disabled
Load Line calibration level 2
cpu post boot speed (max non turbo)
cpu VR current limit 160A
cpu power limit 1 140w
cpu power limit 1 time window 127
