I just put together a new rig, using a Gigabyte z170-HD3 and a Samsung SM951 as the SDD. It is a PCI-E SSD using AHCI protocol.

Initially all was good but somewhere as I installed rivers, something has gone wrong.

If I do a cold boot, I see the POST screen but it does not appear to pass over to the SSD and the system hangs with no screen for a few minutes. It then auto reboots and works fine.

If I do a system restart, the boot up works fine every time.

I have systematically removed all the drivers I had installed, and have reset CMOS but I still have the problem.

Any clues where I should be looking?

I have disabled/removed all power saving stuff I can find.

It is not a NVMe, rather an earlier model. It's AHCI.

Yes Win 10.

Im not sure what Windows 10 does to the BIOS but it can wreak some havoc on it. By switching to your second BIOS it will help you diagnosis the problem

If switching fixes the problem then flash the original one

A lot of motherboards have a WHQL mode that has three options:
-disabled
-Windows 7
-Windows 8/8.1/10

Make sure to switch it to Windows 10 or there will be problems.

I assume this is UEFI. The boot device should be UEFI: Windows Boot Manager.

If I do a cold boot, I see the POST screen but it does not appear to pass over to the SSD and the system hangs with no screen for a few minutes. It then auto reboots and works fine.
This behavior is similar to what Windows 10 does. The hang is when Windows 10 is installing a generic driver, the auto restart occurs when the driver install is completed, then it boots into Windows normally. It's possible that, when you are back in Windows, Windows Update is obtaining a new driver that gets loaded when you restart the computer. Windows fails to load it (the setup likely times out) which causes Windows 10 to again load the generic driver and restart. If this is the case, you can use this to disable that nonsense but you have to run it after the update is found and before it is installed.

I suppose disconnecting the machine from the internet would suffice as a test too.

@Jetster - I have tried reflashing
@FordGT90Concept - I have the BIOS on UEFI and Windows 10 setting. Interesting what you say about the driver loading, the behaviour does fit.

I resolved this issue.

The problem occurred because I was using a monitor without a scaler (one of the korean jobs).

I took the PC to its new owner today and set it up with some commercial monitors and had no problems. So there you go.

I think Ford was closest to the likely problem, the PC was only able to deal with a specific resolution on a soft boot, but not with a hard boot. Somehow I doubt there will be a bios update to fix this, even if I tell them.

I think Windows 8.1/10 boots at 1024x768 and it changes just before displaying the desktop. A different connection (e.g. DisplayPort or DVI) may make it behave differently. Additionally, how the computer handles detecting monitors seems to change frequently...at least in Catalyst drivers.

If it does have an AMD card, there is a new setting in Catalyst that puts Catalyst in charge of detecting monitors while it is running rather than Windows. Turning that on fixed a problem I had yesterday where it wouldn't pick up my second monitor even though it was never unplugged.

Yes, something like that. What threw me off was that BIOS was content with booting at 2560x1440, and so was Win 10, unless the internal graphics were activated - then Win 10 would only boot at 2560x1440 on a soft boot.

The graphics card was a $50 nvidia, quite effective considering the grief I got with Intel.

All sorted now.

option 3 would have been to disable fast boot and switch the bios boot-mode to legacy
