So I plan to upgrade my video solution. HD2900xt is kinda sub par so I will stick with Nvidia for now. So I basically have two options.
1. Get another 8800gts and an SLI mobo. After selling my current board, I will have to fork out another $420.
2. Get a new 8800GTX. After selling my 8800gts, I will have to pay another $280.

So which path do you think is more beneficial both short terms (pre DirectX10) and long term (DirectX 10)? Please vote. Thanks in advance.

WE don't know about DX10 for sure. The cards good suck under it...we just don't know.

I would just do GTS in SLI.

I would wait.
Right now, Nvidia has a little bit of competition, but not enough to hit prices hard enough.
Wait for the ATI's xtx card to come out.
Then you will see prices drop and become more affordable (should).

Plus an 8800GTS is plenty for now.

I can see the 8800 series and ATIs new series being like the 7800 series and X1800 series.
They are going to just be fillers for the newer and better cards :)

I would just keep what you have and spend the money on things like games, 8800GTS is fine for everything unless you like to play at 1920x1440.

No more waiting. I passed up xfx 8800gtx for $380 back in December because of this supposedly uber godly 2900xtx card. I waited, waited, and waited for 5+ months and no top of the line card. Seems that they already scrapped it and making R700. Hell it's already half a year late. If you are going to be late, at least bring the juice. I like ATI but I am a consumer first, not fanboy. Unless DaMulta can shine some light into when if ever the 2900xtx will debut.

No, I game at 2560x1600. Right now I strip BF2142 of every eye candy to get 40+ fps. When I get hit by artillery, I get like 10 fps. That has got to stop.

Ha, see, I didn't know that :p.

I game at 1440x900, so I'd be fine with an 8600GT, or preferably an X1950Pro. Definitely get dual cards, dual cards is better at extreme resolutions, as far as I can gather.

Actually, if you wanted to save some money, sell your monitor and get yourself a 720p HDTV :p.

I read an article on this very subject. 2 8800GTS 320Mb keep up with, and outpace the 8800GTX in all benchmarks. At higher resolutions the SLi combo outpaces the GTX by up to 40fps in some games.

Of course this is only in DX9 games, so the extra memory of the GTX may help it perform better in DX10 (apparently DX10 will eat up memory like there's no tomorrow).

EDIT: Ah, I just noticed you will be getting another 640Mb GTS, so I would go for the GTS if what they say about DX10 is true.

From my readings, sli-ing gts is not "doubling" you performance, but just increasing it 20-80%, 80 being generous...(more towards 3d mark's score...but who cares about 3dmark). A single gtx is equivlant to two gts, but it has the advantage of being a single card, less power demand, and most games perfer a single over a dual setup.

I was actually tempted to sell my dell 3007 and get a 37" Westinghouse 1080p so that I can hook up my pc, hd tuner, and game console to it. But damn, the dell is just too sexy and gaming at 2560x1600 is quite something else. Keep in mind that I will have to sell my P5B deluxe and get an SLI mobo that might not overclock well at all. Hell it might even kill my Crucial rams.

Well you have a SLi motherboard right? If you have a Crossfire board I would say two HD2900XTs. Either way your going to need two cards for such high resolutions.

Two GTS would even do the job IMO. But if you want it all you have to pay for it all.

I'm Still Kinda In shock that your card will only pull 40fps in 2142.. I thought they were better than that? WTF... Then again.. I'm running a X1950XT. Its no Killer Either.. But Still..thought the 8800 would destroy my card...What Did I miss?

Ultra high res can give a huge performance hit to any card.
I'm voting dual GTS. Not as fast as dual GTXs, but will easily tide you over until the next generation come out.

So does anyone know the kind of performance increase from 1 8800gtx to 2 8800gts?

When factoring in SLI or Crossfire, you don't add the memory on each card together. It's still 640mb when you SLI the 8800GTS's.

Then what does the other 640MB do? Party day and night? Is it on drugs and incapable of doing anything?
