As title states, after 3 to 10 minutes of being on this random monitor/tv my in laws had goes to rainbow static starting from the top and working its way down. Now my computer keeps running just fine, and if i turn off the monitor and turn it back on problem is gone...until that random amount of time passes. I can even continue typing etc, so its purely the monitor.

Its a Vizio VW22LHD10T. I was looking forward to getting off the 40 house tv i've been gaming on for 3 years lol. As cool as it was to play gal civ 3 and some other games on it, my eyes definitely hurt after about 2hrs. Which getting back into sc2 now so don't want to burn my eyes balls every time i play. Hence my excitement for this. Any ideas?

EDIT: Just let the colorful static/snow go for about 2 minutes just watching it to see if picture would ever come back. the end result was a blue screen with minor hue differences in straight up and down/horizontal lines and then it whites out from center to edge...very odd imo.

usually i wouldn't even bother, but this is a decent little monitor for free, and while a screen replacement wouldn't be worth it, a power board or even mainboard, 20-50bucks to fix and make anew would be. I'm leaning towards the power board just based on googling, but i'd rather get advised by someone with experience before i go purchasing parts.

With LCD I could be anything. All the components work together. I wouldn't put any money into it. And that's on TV right not a PC?

From your description, you cannot conclude that yet. This could still be the graphics solution in your computer. When you turn the monitor/TV off and on, it forces a new handshake to happen with your graphics solution.

How are you connecting? Sadly, HDMI works great, when it works. But HDMI came out of the home entertainment industry and just has not been as successful when used with computers as its supported had wanted. It can be very problematic when used with computers. If the TV supports D-Sub or DVI, I would try that - if your computer supports one of them.

But really, you need to try another monitor and see if the same thing happens. Or connect another computer to that TV and see what happens.

With LCD I could be anything
What does "LCD" have to do with it? That is just the pixel technology has nothing to do with what the pixels are being told to do. If the monitor is displaying rainbows then that is because the display panel is being told to display rainbows. The liquid crystals are not doing this on their own.

@ Jetser: Yes its a TV not an "official" monitor.

@Bill_Bright : I had it hooked up to my 40" tv at 1080p no problems, same hdmi cord, and have it reconnected to it now with no issues. So again i'm sure its the TV. As for using VGA, i had thought about that but it only allowed 1024x768 max on it according to online spec...so i didn't even bother, though i suppose it should help determine if its just the hdmi port bugging out. Also i do know that the keyboard still types because i was typing my OP on it when it bugged "snowed" on me and just kept typing, upon turning off then back on it properly displayed it on screen. Have to make a bootable USB install for an old pc then i'll be testing out that other monitor.

In the mean time my in laws also had a 720p 19" monitor i'll try.....not sure if i'll care for the resolution downgrade but i suppose it would extend my GTX 560's life even more XD lol. Thanks Bill_bright i'll get back to it tonight or tomorrow.

Had a tv do that many years ago after I put a car speaker on top of it.
Ran a degauss gizmo over/around it took care of it.
