I'm not sure what you are asking. Do you already have the hardware and want to know the software, or do you need the hardware recommendation?

What are you going to be running in those virtual machines? 15-20 virtual machine is a lot and you usually use a cluster of 3 servers to run that

I bought a refurbished Dell x58 server for cheap, and use my main rig as well to run some VMs, but I only run 3-6 at a time mostly, as I'm studying for MCSA. I also use it as an NVR, a File Server, a Plex server and Kodi/XBMC machine. Skipped ECC RAM to lower cost as I already had spare RAM.

And note you have to state your budget. Budget for some may mean under $500. For others, it may mean under $5000.

My budget would be around $1000 for PROCESSOR( 15MB CACHE +HYPER THREADING)+MOTHERBOARD WITH 64GB RAM SUPPORT+ 32GB RAM

Does having more cache memory help in smooth running of Virtual machines?

The architecture and number of cores matter most for the CPU. Cache only really changes with the number of cores usually.

I don't mean to offend, but you don't seem to know much about this, which makes me wonder why you'd want to run so many VMs in the first place. You don't really even need Xeon if this isn't business class stuff anyways, as ECC would be worthless then.

32GB RAM for 20 VMs is not really recommended, you'd want 2GB per VM plus some spare probably. VMs are very limited by I/O, so investing in SSD would make sense as well, at least for caching purposes

If the performance is not an issue and you mostly need it for education, then you can probably settle for a couple of octa-core Avotons:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157475&cm_re=Avoton-_-13-157-475-_-Product

Each one can probably pull 7 single-core VMs + 1 core for host. $349 for SoC, supports dual-channel DDR3 with ECC. Adequate I/O for such a tiny board.
A pair of those with RAM and HDDs will cost less than $1000(depending on config), but you get a total of 16 physical cores in a low-power package.

We need to know what your planning on doing with these VM's. That is quite a lot and can range from a bear minimum setup to allow those VM's to start up all the way to pretty ridiculous levels.

Give us some ideas because even though you said 1000 bucks for a server, ram and board that still leaves a lot on the table.

I want to setup setup my own Lab where I will have all my environment Domain Server, Backup Server, Windows machines , Unix machines and Virtual Storage setup with some simulators.

Ok most of that can be handled by very minimal power. The only thing I want to know is the simulators, like what simulators?

Anyways though instead of just buying the system board and such, why not just buy something like this for your needs?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Proliant...521340?hash=item35fcfa2fbc:g:W2YAAOSwZ8ZW5uJ~

12cores, 24threads, 64gb of ram, RAID 5 8x 300gb 10k drives, etc. That will handle that with flying colors giving your plenty of power to spare with having a lot of VM's and such while keeping around $1000 (Though you can get one without HDD's for less than a $1000 compared to the $1350 price of this one).

Did you make sure to grab the video drivers for the virtual machine? That happens more times than I can count on Windows server where it just decides to install generic video drivers and its all choppy.

What virtualizer you using to run Server 2012 as a VM? Are you running 2012R2?

If you're on Windows running a VM with Windows Server, hopefully you're using Hyper-V. You can add it as a feature on Windows 8 and newer. I'm able to run 2-4 2012R2 VM's on my Dell 3540 (i5 4200u + 8GB DDR3 1600 + 2GB AMD 8850M/R7 265, though it uses the Intel's integrated HD4000 GPU) without issues. Using Hyper-V console or RDP to access their interface works great. Using that for my mobile MCSA training platform.

I think that, you can better help from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
You read & see carefully all of system then you can get better help for set up your xeon server.

Hi Guys, I would just like to update one thing here about my Laptop
(6 Gen i7 16GB RAM 4GB graphics Dell 5559 laptop), when I installed entire Windows 2012
system on my Samsung SSD 850 pro 256GB SSD , the Windows 2012 server was running damn smoothly.. I am thinking about buying 1TB SSD for my laptop! I think besides Xeon processor SSD or SSHD drives are must to ensure smooth running of VMs.
