Hi guys

I am using Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0 mother board, Geforce GTX 970, AMD FX-8350 processor with stock cooler, 8GB ram and 850 watt Antec Power Supply. I have created the rig myself an year ago. It was running fine until recently it started shutting down while playing games.

I have formatted the computer but it made no difference. I installed open hardware monitor and noticed that my temperature was 55 to 60 degrees on idle for my motherboard and processor. Since then I tried re-pasting my processor with arctic silver 5 and dusted off my PC but with no luck :(. The temperature rises sharply as I play games and my computer shuts down.

Any ideas will be appreciated

Is it overclocked?
Reset the CMOS and run it at default, you may also need a better CPU cooler, one that blows down over the board to cool the VRM section also.
Stock coolers suck.

Its not overclocked. I have reset bios to default and I think I put performance at its lowest.

i bet your processor's heatsink isnt flat... take a ruler or a razer, and see if the heatsink is making good contact, also what heatsink are you using?

I am using the default heatsink. I will check the heatsink to see if its flat. I also noticed thermal margin using AMD over drive is around 10 degrees when the computer is turned on. Does that mean that if it increases 10 degrees then my computer will shut down?

add 2nd fan in fron (if you didnt already) and make em blow in fresh air. up and rear fans blow out and when you get evo place it to move air to the back.

Well your problem is most definitely heat. The maximum safe operating temp for the FX line is between 63 and 65 degrees, so as soon as you go beyond those margins your PC is liable to throttle and eventually shut down to prevent anything bad happening.

Do you have a physical switch on your motherboard that does some funky unlocking/overclocking or anything? Double check your VCore voltage in the BIOS to make sure your motherboard isn't pumping 1.5v through the CPU by default.

EDIT: Also, is the CPU fan actually spinning?

I had one [M5A99FX PRO] a few years ago running a PhenomX6 that had a similar problem.
After trying different PSU, Cpu cooler, BIOS etc... the problem was the VRM´s, power/voltage where all over the place, my advice RMA.

I applied paste after watching some videos. I put in a blob in middle and used a card to spread it around with even pressure. I put on the heat sink after that. How do you check the voltage the mother board is pumping into CPU

Try it without spreading. Just a gain of rice in the center and put the HS on

Then monitor your temps, run prime95 for a few seconds or OCCT. What the max temps?

USE real temp to monitor or OCCT can monitor them

Then order a CM 212

Then get a better cooler. I don't think it should shut off at 85c but I've never owned that chip

Try OCCT. Its a little easier on the chip

It should shut off at 70 degrees.

no that may be the throttle point but the board determines to shut down point. Maybe the BIOS is set to shut down at that temp. I've seen them run at 80c, I think? I may not know what wtf I'm talking about also. Its been awhile

I am in new zealand and currently its 19 degrees here.
The computer was running fine earlier on when it was like 25-30 degrees and it slowly started shutting off at time to now all the time when gaming.

Yes but temperature seems high still. See the screenshot showing 60 degrees in bios
