video card cooler question

will any cooler work on any card, as long as they are the same type, albeit not the same brand?

I hate the EVGA turbine coolers with the whiny sound they make (im anal about not having a noisy computer) and im not too exited about the aftermarket coolers out there so I was wondering if I could buy a bad card for next to nothing and just rob the stock cooler off that card to swap them out?

im thinking any of those cards with big open fans would be perfect and fairly quiet when running

i have a gtx660ti and know I would have to use a cooler off of another gtx660ti for this to even have a chance of working so please advise if this idea makes any sense and if it should work

As long as they are the same design yes. But everything has to be exactly in the same place, especially the things that need cooling like the VRM modules.
Post exactly the model you have and what cooler you want to attach to it. Also is your problem in idle or load ?

First of all you might loose the warranty if you have any left so check for the conditions.

It should work but before that what temps do you get with that card ? did you try setting a custom fan curve in MSI Afterburner or EVGA tool ? you might get slightly hotter temps but lower noise from it.

With EVGA u don't loose ur warranty and if this GTX 660Ti SC is build on Nvidia's ref design than det cooler u list @keakar should fit.

Not meaning to be critical but you might actually want to look at getting a newer card and not just replacing the cooler on your existing one. The 660ti is aging and might find it hard keeping up in more recent games etc.

Along that note, I suggest getting something along the lines of the Asus Direct CU3 strix based cards or something similar that don't even turn the fans on until the card hits 65c and only hit 50% speed @ ~90c, fairly quiet.

I won't suggest an exact model though, and the asus was simply an example of one with that profile.

You could try looking at the zotac 660 ti for a bummed card and rob the cooler.
I am not 100% sure if it will work, but zotac did use the short pcb ref on the on some.

The GTX 660 Ti is otherwise identical to the GTX 670, for all of the benefits that entails. While NVIDIA isn’t shipping a proper reference card for the GTX 660 Ti, they did create a reference design, and this appears to be what it’s based on. Both the EVGA and Zotac cards are using identical PCBs derived from the GTX 670’s PCB, which is not unexpected given the power consumption of the GTX 660 Ti. The only difference we can find on this PCB is that instead of there being solder pads for 16 memory chips there are solder pads for 12, reflecting the fact that the GTX 660 Ti can have at most 12 memory chips attached.

When i read the op i get the impression(which i could be wrong) but based on the way you word the part referencing dual fan shrouds....have you ever owned a dual fan card bdfore? I only ask because ive have several of all types, and i feel like i want to mention you CAN get noise of different types from non blower cards....like the sound of a jet plane inside your pc.

Just making certain your not under the impression a dual fan shroud will be silent.

list your GTX 660ti exact model, that will help to know more about its PCB and possible compatible coolers...
some 660ti's have the same PCB that the 670 ... and also come 670's shares the PCB with its father GTX 680... as Gigabyte models, so dont try to guess and list the exact one...

Best bet is wait till you get the card and run it. You wanted a budget card. If you start spending money for coolers, you could have bought a newer card
with dual fans. If it was me I would make sure card is clean and run it and check temps. Change thermal paste if needed and maybe change fan profile.

As jboydgolfer said lot of blower style coolers are very good.

well just thinking if I can get a dead card for like $10 to rob the cooler off of it, I would do it

as someone mentioned above, its not worth spending the money to buy a $40 cooler for it

guess i'll just leave it be and put up with the turbine whine, I had EVGA cards before and don't buy them anymore because of the turbines but this was a used budget purchase so it is what it is

I invested in a AC Xtreme 3 it is compatible with 980Ti and it might be with the newer generation that will launch in june.
So OP if you invest in a cooler do it for the future not just for the 660Ti
