Upgrading an HP ENVY23-d-010ea

Hi I went looking for a refurbished 17.3 laptop just for the kitchen to surf with and I bought this instead, an HP ENVY 23-d010ea . I would still like to upgrade the 4gb ram and the 500gb hard drive to an ssd, crucial said I can go up to 16gb ram, I was thinking of 8gb, i have a spare Crucial 250gb ssd but using the caddy I have it would not line up do I need a special caddy.

What do you mean it wouldn't line up? If it's anything like a normal laptop it should be to just plop it in.

I replaced the HDD of my asus gaming laptop with an SSD, it looked like it did not fit but I just had to turn the caddy and then the holes lined up perfectly.

Mounting Holes are pretty much standerised on HD's and SSD's
remove your current hd from its oem caddy replace it with your SSD

You either have the ssd or the caddy upside down

Or is that an all in one unit? in which case its a 3.5 drive standard,and youll need a ssd 2.5 to 3.5 adapter
Or some adhesive material to mount it inthe 3.5 caddy

your need a adapter or your need to ghetto mount it until you get a proper SSD Adapter mounting plate

max you can install is a i7 3770S (take note of the S /T at the end that means lower power parts only)

its worth noting that an ssd dosnt need to be as securely fixed as a normal Hardrive does.. it weighs next to nothing has no moving parts isnt subject to shock damage and can just sit where convenient.. some sticky backed velcro would make a good method of fixing or it could just hang loose in the caddy..

256 is plenty big enough for web browsing and stuff..

these things are getting very cheap now.. so are high speed SD cards.. 8 gigs of ram is also more than enough..

i dont think its worth upgrading the cpu it will just generate more heat and make the fans work harder you wont notice the extra performance..

Hi I have finished now, I installed a Crucial BX200 480GB 2.5 inch SSD so I could get my music and a few films on it, and put in 8gb ram and yes I am happy enough without touching the CPU, I am dare I say it getting used to windows 10, so thanks again for all the advice.
P.S don't tell anyone I have even bought a copy of Windows 10 for my desktop.

and for any UK person looking for small ssd.. mymemory are doing a 120 gig one for £24 quid.. i couldnt resist that price ether..

and dont tell anybody but i even bought a copy if windows 10 to go on an old vista laptop i have..

no free upgrades from vista.. and i also like windows 10..

your system should go plenty well enough with the cpu it has..

Hi trog100, I got mine from ebuyer for £99 and the caddy from there also, back screws in the caddy didn't line up with the original box but a bit of good double sided tape sorted that.
