AMD Intros the Radeon R3 Series Value SSDs

AMD made additions to its Radeon-branded SSD lineup, with the new R3 Series. Targeted at the entry-level segment, these drives come in capacities of 120 GB, 240 GB, 480 GB, and 960 GB; and combine TLC NAND flash memory with Silicon Motion SM2256KX controllers. The 120 GB, 240 GB, and 480 GB variants offer read speeds of up to 520 MB/s, the 960 GB variant up to 510 MB/s. The 120 GB variant writes at up to 360 MB/s, the 240 GB and 480 GB variants at 470 MB/s, and the 960 GB variant at up to 450 MB/s. The drives are built in the 7 mm-thick 2.5-inch form-factor, and feature the SATA 6 Gb/s interface. The 120 GB, 240 GB, and 480 GB variants are priced at US $40.99, $69.99, and $136.99, respectively. Prices of the 960 GB variant are not known.

What's up with that crap? From your source:

Right now these SSDs are available in the US and Canada, with the US pricing being as follows, $40.99 for the 120GB model, $69.99 for the 240GB model and $136.99 for the 480GB model. These prices came from Amazon US.

From one of the HC reviewers commenting on a user review from a few weeks ago:

The R3 is not a tosh/OCZ drive. Its basically a Crucial BX200 clone with lower binned NAND and probably not as good firmware. IE its TLC NAND with a SMI 2256 controller that is probably running 100% stock SMI firmware. Its 'made' by a firm that is not well known in the storage industry but approached AMD trying to get into it with the idea of adding to AMDs lineup at a lower price point than OCZ could offer. IE they are AMD board partner that are trying to get a toe hold in a new marketplace. IIRC just like OCZ they are turnkey operation for this drive in that AMD is basically just lending them their name

All but the 960gb drives prices are shown.

Either way, I have seen better value drives out there for the same money. Picked up a 480gb Sand Disk Ultra II for $120.99 before any rebates for a quick upgrade to a friends laptop which had much better read and write speeds.

I don't think these are replacing them, these are just lower in the stack kind of like how the Samsung have the PRO series and the EVO series.

You can get a 240GB BX200 for $5 less than these prices, and a 480GB BX200 for almost $20 cheaper. I don't think AMD knows the definition of "value"...

It also looks to be a slightly better performer as well which makes this price very meh. I think they need to take a look at the price and the parts used because they need some adjustment on these since there are so many better options for the money out there with better performance.
