Not sure which is more beneficial? 1x4k monitor or 3 1080/1440p's?

Which Monitor would be more beneficial?

why not get one ultrawide monitor? less hassle and no bezel
First reply has ruined your poll Op ;) has me stumped because that's the choice I made 3 1080s or 1 4k or an ultrawide, tricky but the 4k I got is rather nice imho go 4k it only adds options, the others will show there limits quickly.

Depends on how much muscle you are using to push it. 4k is dramatically more intensive to push with decent eye candy than 3440x1440. I am waiting a couple of years to jump on the 4k bandwagon in order to let the muscle in video cards and the optimization of games catch up. I think over 60fps 4k gaming with eye candy cranked is still a couple of years out.

Just my 2 cents.

On my 50" tv, I see virtually no difference between 3k (2560x1440p) and 4k (3840x2160p)
So I always play in 3k. but it looks amazing..

3440x1440p isnt considered 4k is it? My guess is no
It's called 3K, but technically it's more like "2.5K". Go for it I'd say, way better decision than to buy a slow 4K monitor. 2nd best option after it would be a 27" 1440p 144Hz Gsync in my books.

PS. 4K may very well be a "dead resolution" that will never replace 1080/1440p. HDR is the next big thing, HDR in 1080p or 1440p - 4K is a joke compared to that.

Explanation of HDR:
@5:00 min.

I guess you will want 3840x2160, only when you get very large screens. 60-70"+ in size.

I wouldn't call it dead. Just only for huge screens.
You get a 100" screen and you're going to want 4k or maybe even more..

I agree though about HDR. That's the big thing to watch for now..

So you don't think HDR is coming to 4k, I'd get a HDR 8K 144Hz if I was the, patient ,deep pockets kind ;), it does depend on your use cases I don't care so much about 144Hz but I do get why some do but I like my 4k and I'm not an intense fps gamer but 4k films are on the way.

Resolution isn't the problem, it increases PPI, which means the picture is sharper, even 22" or smaller screens, comparable to smartphones that have 1080p or higher resolution - the picture is just very sharp compared to a TV or PC monitor that's nowhere near that PPI - that's why you'd want a high resolution on PC too, as far as it gets or is supportable by GPUs. The problem with 4K right now is, it doesn't have high frequency monitors (100Hz+) and the tradeoff then, compared to a 1440p/144hz or 3K ultrawide @ 100Hz is too big. It's just not worth it. Also the OP wanted a wide view, so buying a ultra wide monitor is the best option for him - no bezels, high quality and no problems that you'd have with Eyefinity/Surround setup.

Ever tried a 100Hz+ monitor? It's just way more fluid, the picture is clearer. It's simply better quality.

I feel like a debate about what the human eye can see, is incoming..lol.
60hz seems very fluid to me.. Maybe some day I'll make the jump to 100+
But heck.. Good luck getting 100+ fps..lol Not the way I play, in 3k, ultra settings. XD

as the OP says, he plans on getting a GTX1080 so it will push that ultra wide 1440p +100FPS with ultra on most games , and a bit lower FPS on some. currently the 1080 hits 60 FPS and lower on 4k.

as the OP says, he plans on getting a 1080 so it will push that ultra wide 1440p +100 with ultra on most games, and a bit lower on some. currently the 1080 hits 60 and lower on 4k.
It's not a direct plan to get 1080p. Im looking at all the options here. I have been wanting to jump to 1440p for a while but things just seem like it's in a 4k push lately especially with the new nvidia cards coming out today. Was trying to see if 4k was really an option or not.

This has sparked a nice discussion and Im enjoying reading all the comments. So far Im leaning on maybe a 1440p 100+ hertz montior.

Keep the discussion going :)

If you're sticking with NV, definitely get a Gsync capable monitor. The Acer I picked up was my first venture into Freesync, and I will admit what I thought was going to be another gimmick is actually really amazing. The variable refresh rate really does make everything buttery smooth.

I hate that we have to choose a GPU manufacturer prior to buying a monitor, but until a "standard" for variable refresh rates is adopted by everyone, I'm afraid this is where we are.

But I highly recommend Gsync or Freesync to anyone (that games) that is looking to purchase a new monitor. Actually using it, really changed my perception of something I thought was going to be another "feature" I would never use.

I fully intended on getting a monitor with Gsync built into it. I really like the Asus ROG Swit PG348Q, but I dont think I can justify that $1300 price tag.

Having 1st hand experience from 60hz to 144hz its really big diffirence specially with fast moving game like fps, from 144hz to 100hz i couldn't tell.

Now with 3440x1440p aspect ratio 21:9 some games dont natively support it and you may have to edit game file (ie fall out 4) its somthing to consider.

In regards with gsync, i had to return my 980ti strix so im running my old 970 strix till 1080 strix comes out, gsync makes really smooth when my frame dips down.

This is a huge thing that needs to be considered. And some AAA titles do not support it natively, which was a little shocking for me. Getting full resolution to work in some games is a walk in the park, others however are a total pain (MGSV for one).

I mostly play WoW and have no idea if it supports 3440x1440p or not. I know it supports 4k.

I play the new Doom too. Anyone have that and a 3440x1440p monitor and could tell me if it's supported natively?
