So not sure what's going on but it's happened twice. While rendering a project using Maya/Mental Ray the computer decided to restart. When I got up to check the renders everything was shut down as if I restarted my pc.

I know temps rise on my CPU while rendering because....well if no one has rendered before, it takes quite a toll on the CPU and RAM, at least mental ray does. I was hoping someone could help me figure out what it might be?

What I did so far: I purchased some Noctua fans to replace some fans I felt weren't doing enough and I am still using a Antec 920 Kuhler CPU cooler. I also stopped rendering until I can fix this. Thanks in advance!

PC build is in my system specs, I saw temps reach as high as 80, but idle is somewhere around 38 -40 and it sits under my desk and on top of bricks not blocking any air passages if that helps any.

Those are good idle temps for a first gen i7, but I would never accept 80c under load on mine. It could be peaking much higher as well. Repaste?

I was considering doing this, and hoping to god this is the free solution to my problem, I suppose it's something I can/will try soon, but would still like to hear what everyone has to say before doing so.

It's not a first Gen, it's a 4th Gen Haswell.
80 is a bit high but it shouldn't shut down.
Check the thermal shut down limit in the BIOS, check the air coming out of the case, is it hot or only warm?
Replace the thermal paste if it's more than a couple of years old.

I'd run something to test the cpu.. Then id test the gpu.
One or the other is likely getting too hot, failing or needs to be downclocked..
Or you may want to remove drivers with DDU and install new ones, clean.
If it's bluescreening, I'd look more closely at the memory.

run that, although I think your Processor is fine.
Check temps with HWInfo at idle and load.

Explains a portion of the Haswell heat issue.
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core-i7-4770k_12.html
Portion of the review:
Haswell offers a difficult choice: you either have to put up with high temperature and heat dissipation of the CPU under heavy loads caused by automatic increase in the processor core voltage or to give up power savings in idle mode.

But this is just part of the problem. Haswell turned out to be much hotter in real life than its predecessor. The maximum permissible temperature of its CPU cores is 100°C but even in nominal operational modes Core i7-4770K would get as hot as 75-80°C even with a high-performance air-cooler.

taking the fan off and hitting the front with my dyson works wonders :)

Found your System - i74770k, Antec Kuhler 920.

80C is a bit high. Intel say keep below 72C - http://ark.intel.com/products/75123/Intel-Core-i7-4770K-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-3_90-GHz. Temps got so bad on these that lots of people de-lidded them and changed out the TIM.

Re-seat your cooler. Boost your CPU fan speed. Or get a better cooler.

Edit - oh - also make sure your CPU voltage is standard - not overclocked. You can do this by resetting bios or cmos (remove then refit button battery)

if you decide to re-seat check the contact area also just to be sure all is flat as supposed to be....if is not, worth fine sanding to achieve best perf.

With a restart during rendering I would run memtest86 for about an hour and see what it does. It shouldn't be restarting with your CPU at 80c unless you set the bios to do so.

Hmm, the GPU isn't being used while rendering, Ill get an idle of 40-47. It hasn't blue screened on me at all. During any rendering or anything. I will have to check the memory and get back to you on that. Running a test render for a single frame and it isn't going anywhere near 80. It is staying at 72c and lower at 100% load.

This is very interesting info, I've heard of something like that which is why they made the i7 5820k or whatever right? I am rendering a single frame right now and it hasn't gone any higher than 72c so thats weird.

Good Idea will have to check out the dust situation for it. But just at a quick glance it isnt dusty or anything. Will do this just in case. The CPU cooler is in the back of the case as that seemed like a great place to place it while I have noctua fans ( soon to come) pull in the cold air.

Found your System - i74770k, Antec Kuhler 920.

Will check bios and see if it needs a reset!

I was told I should check do a check on that to make sure the memory is fine. Will do it soon and post results!

It's not a first Gen, it's a 4th Gen Haswell.
80 is a bit high but it shouldn't shut down.
Check the thermal shut down limit in the BIOS, check the air coming out of the case, is it hot or only warm?
Replace the thermal paste if it's more than a couple of years old.

air coming out is warm, hot on 100% load but not anything outrageous from what it usually is.

Hi, MentalRay doesn't use any GPU unless you tell it to. As far as I know there is no way to tell it to do that. Maya is usually based on CPU and RAM unless you use something like VRAY and start using VFX which I think will then start pulling from the card otherwise it will just use the CPU if the Quadro or the Firepro isnt
detected? (I am not sure)

Check the GPU load and temps with GPU-Z while rendering.
Here are the temps currently on everything. Downloaded hwinfo upon request from an earlier post.

Keep in mind the renders have just started maybe a couple of minutes ago. I took this when I could get ti at 100% load. It keeps going up and down on the temps but mostly stays the same. the GPU is basically in idle

I was running my Core i7 920 at 4 GHz peaking temperatures of 89°C because I had fans tuned for silence or I was using small low profile coolers in tiny cases. No issues.

^This, run memtest86 for about an hour or so.

Will be running that tomorrow. Till then I have the computer rendering while hwinfo is recording a log file.

memtest and dusting out anything thats in there will all be done tomorrow and will post results.

software logging like aida offers is something you might want to look at too :)

Don't know how to use aida for software logging but would like some extra info on how to do that, thanks.

I was running my Core i7 920 at 4 GHz peaking temperatures of 89°C because I had fans tuned for silence or I was using small low profile coolers in tiny cases. No issues.

I have been using a custom setting for as long as I can remember. It may not be that. But will look into it for sure.

73C is a bit high. But I gather it didn't do a re-start.

You can get rid of re-start by going into Safe Mode and disabling auto restart on problem.

But I'd try to remedy it first eg higher CPU fan speed etc as above.

you enable it in the settings, what it logs and how often.

it would slow renders a little stealing cycles but if you're crashing....it will show you what the pc was doing just before.
