gtx 980sli or gtx1070 ?

I have asus strix 980 and want to upgrade. Should I buy one more 980 or new 1070? I searched internet but couldnt find this kind of comparison.

System:
6600k 4.4ghz
gigabyte 170x-gaming7
16gb corsair 3000mhz ram
philips 32" 1920x1080 monitor ( will upgrade 2k 144hz)

980SLi is just a tad faster than a single 1080. I know its expensive but id rather wait for the 1080 to drop in price rather then go 980SLi and have to deal with issues that plague multi-GPu setups... I say this as someone whose been running Dual GPu's since Radeon 4870s were king.

Both options are good.

1070 is more future proof wth more RAM and being a newer card.
Also with one card you don't have to worry about SLI issues and use less power.

Another 980 would be a good option if you can find one cheap. Prices are tumbling ATM.

I been thinking of SLI but not 980 but something cheaper. Bought 670 GTX 2Gb from my old 460 and it is working fine and I been thinking to buy another 670. It's just for the time AMD releases their cards so that I can compare those with NVidia's. Also I'm sure the prices will drop. SLI Is maybe a good option if you don't mind power usage and heat. I'd wait with decision. But if you already made your mind with buying a newest Nvidia sell the one you already have now. The price is still decent for 980 if you wanna sell it and it will drop for sure later on. If SLI then wait also for the price drop and then buy additional card. Either way AMD is releasing some good gear in my opinion it would be nice to see first what they offer and then decide. From what I've seen and read so far it's promising

SLI works best when you can make do without it.. i dont have problems with it but i think its only because i can manage without when it isnt properly optimized..

for example a pair of 980 cards may work fine but a pair of lesser cards may not do.. what i have said may sound odd but i think its true..

in fact i think having more gpu grunt than you generally need is a good rule to follow sli or not..

The two 980's would run circles around that 1070..
Two 980's are better than a 1080, by a notable amount.
Just consider what you play and if it plays well with sli.
I'd go for the 980 sli, hands down. If the games you play, work well with sli.

Wrong, I'm not sure what benchmarks you got that from, but a stock 1080 is equal to 980SLI, an overclocked 1080 easily beats 980SLI.

Don't let benchmarks full you.
In real life gaming scenario, the 1080 is not that great of a card.
I tested it a few days back with a buddy of mine that works in one of the biggest retail stores here, and he got one from work.
The 1080 is only 5 - 10% faster than one 980 and it is on par with the 980TI.
Our testing was done with:
I7 6700
Asus ROG Mobo
16GB DDR4
GTX 1080
Benched on: Witcher 3, GTA V, Far Cry 4 and BF4.
On Witcher 3 and GTA V, it is the same story.
1080p 144hz monitor, all maxed out.
Min FPS: 40s
Avg FPS: 60s
Max FPS: 80s

On BF4 and FC4, it is a little bit better, but not enought to convince me that this card is worth 700€.
Min FPS: 50s
Avg FPS: 70s
Max FPS: 90s

SLI 980s can do 20% better than these numbers from benches ive seen and read, so it is not that great of a deal.

And they say this card is 4K and VR Capable.
Im sorry to burst your bubbles but IT JUST ISNT.

Ill post a photo of the gpu taken with my phone as a proof.

It still has a lot of issues, this card. It runs very hot, it thermalthrottles, it is loud, and it is not as good as advertised.

PS. Here is the photo of the card we tested, and i don't think I'm blind because i can clearly see GTX 1080 on the side written.

Well I don't own a GTX1080 but I bought a MSI GTX1070 Gaming X, I've created a custom fan profile with MSI afterburner and it stays below 55 degrees C most of the time while gaming, both fans spin at around 1000rpm average. My card performs as good as a GTX980Ti.

If it was the GTX1080 Founders Edition, yeah we all know it runs hot and it may throttle, which may in case lower benchmark scores.

This is simply not possible, since 980's are about 20% slower than 980Ti. So....the math doesn't work.

20% is just theoretical performance.
In real case scenario, it is only 5 - 10%.

The point is simple, the 1080 is not worth it, unless you want a future proff card for next 2-3 years, and still with the performance i saw, im not convinced it will hold that long.

No, it's real alright. I just last week went 980Ti after a year with a 980. 5-10% more does not even come close to the performance difference.

The comparison is relevant because 1080 beats a 980Ti by a noticeable amount, and 1080 has on average 40% more performance than a 980.

Nope. Straight up false. I dont need to remind everyone about the 100's of reviews for the 1080 that contradict you, plus my own personal experiences.
