No offence but this seems to be a case of more money than brains.
Even the blind can see that the answer is NO.
Why would you even consider upgrading at that much of a price difference for something you cant even see.
Take that money and put it over for a rainy day.
I would understand if you asked if you should upgrade from a R7 250 or a R7 260x or HD 7770 but from a R9 390 that would be a waste of money and in your case a lot of money.

I'll chime in on this as I just sold a 290 which is older/slower than the 390 and was seriously considering the 1070. After much deliberation I've ended up purchasing a like new 290 in an excellent deal. I game at 1080p and don't foresee going to a higher resolution anytime soon. What I also got was a Nixeus 24" 144Hz Freesync gaming monitor. I would not have been able to buy that monitor if I got a 1070. My 2 cents.

Is supply really that bad in the States? Here in Germany we've had and still have plenty of cards in stock.

R9 390 needs no upgrade even at 1440P, stay with it.

I'm eyeing up the GTX 1060, just hope it turns out good.

i think in the end you have to select the performance levels you need or want and then find a cost effective way of getting them..

if the best bang for buck does not give you the performance level you want or need its all academic.. so far up near the high end the 1070 looks to be good value for money (relatively speaking) and the 1080 dosnt.. the pattern follows the 970 and 980.. one was good value for money and the other wasnt..

i think amd have a winner with the 480 at 1080 resolution levels but that depends on the coming 1060 card.. how quickly it comes and how its priced.. if its as poorly supplied at launch as the 1070 and 1080 cards were the 480 will be a winner.. i think it will be poorly supplied.. more so being as the launch has been brought forward and nvidia cant just conjure up 1060 cards out of thin air.. :)

they f-cked up (under supplied) the 1080 and 1070 launch and dont see any reason why the same wont happen with the potentially much more popular (higher demand) 1060 cards..

i think you are right about the lower level 960 card not being good value for money.. that was aimed at those that could not afford the more expensive but better value for money 970 card.. the poor lose out as is often the case.. he he

trog
Ok you are right. i read to this statement "i think amd have a winner with the 480 at 1080 resolution levels but that depends on the coming 1060 card"
them it popped into my head what comes after. yeah Nvidia had to respond to what AMD offered in that 1080p res but i think that AMD is prepared for that and i''m sure AMD will respond :) As far as i read and looked through all the benchmarks and of course problems than AMD has something in store and they have overseen this with NVIDIA's move and it will come up soon :)
That's just my perspective and I'm sure it will never come bold :) Well cheer for AMD. The difference between Nvidia and Amd is this
Nvidia gives a best card and then goes down with performance to mach since they want to be the "top notch best card" and AMD is going from lower to get better and that's what i like :)
"TI" version doesnt have to be that good would i say overwhelming but AMD's might :) since 480 has a god damn head room which Nvidia's might not :)
Well that's just my conclusion but i love the competition :) Can't wait what comes after :D
Cheers for all tech lovers :D
