question about samsung 850 ssd

I have an old 500GB Samsung 840 ssd that had the well known slowing down issues and to fix that, i was told a few years ago that I should use the Samsung magician tool to fix the slow down software design flaw issues with it. (or something like that)

well im about to swap it out to the newer 500GB samsung 850 ssd and I want to know if I should still use the Samsung magician or anything else I should know to keep it running well and be as fast as possible?

I plan to keep the 840 as my back up storage drive

please tell me anything you think I should know about the 850 since I haven't kept up or paid any attention to anything computer hardware related in years

I have a 2T 850 Pro,(4 months in use)+I have win10 and linux, never used Magician software, on my old 830 I used Magician....

I wouldn't worry too much about it; I haven't used it in years. I used to use it on my 830s, used it once on my bro's 840, and with my current 850 Evo I've never used it, and it's going strong as a system drive.

the magician software offers some type of "enhanced performance" options on win 7, and 8+ , but AFAIK, it has no support for Win10 , atleast as of the last time i checked. other than that, its just an information tool, Could be used for Firmware updating iirc, but not a big requirement. your good w/o it. you can also set some storage functions, and health test,if I were you, id install it, and then disable it from "start with windows" via your start-up options, that way You have it if needed, but it isnt using CPU % unnecessarily
oh, and it can also be used to achieve inflated benchmark only high write and read scores, but they have no influence in real life operations.

use the latest version of Magician, If there are firmware updates for the ssd, get them.

hmmm... 3 replies say don't bother with magician and 1 reply says to still use it ???????????????

I am still using win 7 for now and as long as I am able to but may have to go to win 10 in another year or two

You don't need magician what so ever, Only thing you might want to do is make a none formatted partition at the end of the drive which can be done without it.

Maybe install it time to time or have it installed but disabled to make easy firmware checks for the drive.

The fix for the 840 was a firmware update which can be done with magician or not. Personally I like Samsung Magician for the settings and maintenance. Its a well thought out program which uses very little resources and instantly you can see your drives health and updates available

i have it installed, but disabled it from starting with windows.

fired it up once to setup the drives - and i'll use it every now and then to check for firmware updates.

I'm using Samsung 850 Pro 2TB. Been using it for 3 and a half months. I have Samsung Magician installed and I also use RAPID Mode. Works flawlessly, haven't noticed any slowdowns.

When I used Rapid Mode in Win 7 it would not let me create restore points, does that still happen in 10?

I had a system messed up once because of rapid mode, needed to reinstall windows, not using it anymore.

Nope, creates restore points just fine. Also no problems with RAPID Mode even when I had system lockups or crashes due to testing overclocks and stuff like that.
