I'm a oldie newbie returning again soo many years after you guys helping me out with my build. My X58 Sabertooth MB has been playing funny on me with no starting up.It's horrible at it during winter, colder times.
Sadly times have changed....finances are few for a new board but I have spent the last 5 hours researching for a replacement board.
I have read that Sandybridge CPUs can run on 1155lga boards all over the internet (I'm looking at a used X77 Sabertooth to replace my X58,as the 77 is far cheaper than the 58s on ebay) however I have also checked my specific CPU and it seems its incompatible with the X77.What gives?...confuzzled brain here.
My old CPU running on the X58 MB is a Intel i7-920 CPU/ 2.66GHz/ 8m/ 4.80.

The Intel i7-920 CPU is a Nehalem 1366 CPU Not a sandy bridge 1155. It will not work bro
The X58 is the enthusiast level chipset, the Z77 is not. I don't think there is a X77

i7-920 is pre Sandy Bridge CPU's.
It is a totally different socket.

Benchmark Scores well I've fried a 775' P4 12 years ago, that counts?
Previous Generation Intel® Core™ i7 Processor

socket: FCLGA1366
Chipsets: X58 only
Lithography: 45 nm

Available processors

since you have intel's 920 i7, the maximun upgrade you could do is getting an Intel® Core™ i7-980 Processor 6C/12T, that’s the unique upgrade using the same Motherboard,

For Second and Third Generation Intel® Core™ i7 Processors : SandyBridge and IvyBridge,

socket: FCLGA1155
Chipsets: 1st generation: B65 H61 Q67 H67 P67 Z68 // 2nd Generation: B75 Q75 Q77 H77 Z75 Z77
Lithography: 32 nm Sandy Bridge & 22 nm IvyBridge

So I bet that you are little bit confused with the Generations, also with compatible sockets between generations, mostly with X" chipsets, like X58 which is the one you have and all the new or other X" named chipsets, like X79 or X99 for the Extreme line of Intel® Core™ i7 Processors, but that’s another mess…

So its better to fill your current specs, and also to check your question and ask again, about the upgrade / swap or Rebuild that you want to do son,

You don't have sandybridge you have nehalem. So like has been said it wont work with Z77, your option is only X58 if you want to keep the i7 920, it isn't that great of a CPU and you could very well likely get a 4770/H97 for the same price as the X58 board alone.

Can you give more detail about the problem with your current board.

Hi there, sorry for the late reply. It's 2am here in NZ and it has been busy like crazy.

The problem is the motherboard won't power on at times.I thought the problem was the PS but I bought a brand new Seasonic PS and the problem still exists.
Strangely the board powers on quicker during summer. In winter,it usually takes a while (like 30mins plus) or just does not power up.And it's winter and the damn bugger is not starting at all.

Thanks guys.WOW....all this time I thought it was a Sandybridge CPU.I recall it being stated on an auction listing here as such when I bought it.
But since it seems its an old bugger of a processor, maybe its time to just upgrade to a better board and CPU.However since finances are really tight,it will have to be second-hand for now.I might save in a few years to buy the newer processors when I do a proper upgrade.Right now I am using my old Core 2 Duo computer and its damn awful slow haha.

Yes I did get a bit confused with the Generations.
And shipping via ebay for the parts is not cheap at all but i'll consider getting the best quality for my small budget.I'd want to use my current ram and SSD and GPU for it too to save me some.
I'm assuming the Sandy and Ivybridge CPUs use the DDR3 rams only?

First look at the socket . the CPU and the mobo must be of the same socket . Then check whether the CPU is supported by the mobo and since which BIOS

There are few exceptions where the mobo socket supports CPUs of an older compatible socket . Buts its very rare

e.g. AMD AM3+ socket support AM3 processors

Thanks,I'll be looking for either Sandy or Ivybridge CPU and compatible motherboards over the next few days..So the research continues lol.

getting older generations may be more expensive than getting some new ones, even when looking for used hardware, its better to save a huge penny for new generation build, or at least upgrade parts only such as motherboard, processor, memory and cooling if necessarily, otherwise you will get used hardware for a huge price,

Those Sabertooth motherboards come with a 5 year warranty. I think some troubleshooting is in order. If it's the motherboard, you might get it replaced under warranty.

Nice used Z77 motherboards with an upper end IB CPU can cost almost as much as new Haswell. @little cat's suggestion above might be the way to go.

Dont give up on your current system yet.

I would take the whole thing apart, rebuild it and see if the problem persists.

Plenty of us still run X 58 with great results.

Bad solder contact(s)? During summer, the board is warmer, and the components expand slightly. During winter, the board is colder, and the components contract slightly.

Try and se if you can find what is failing. X58 is not so bad and overclock very well if you do any thing of that sort. My I7 920 can do 4.4 GHz on air cooling but it gets very hot at those speed.

Just to confirm my system here is a image where my CPU runs at 4.4 GHz for some benchmark fun.

It could be the capacitors in the Power Supply stopping it from booting straight away when cold.

I have re-seated the ram, psu, ssd and hard drive and all worked fine.

What I meant was that, during winter or colder times, after I press the start button on my computer,it does not start for a long while,at times it has taken up to 30 minutes to boot.
I was recommended to check the capacitors as one could be leaking or bulging (forgot the term).I have an ex work mate whos into micro-electronics who could possibly fix that if I find a problematic capacitor.
And yes I have been mentally debating whether to spend money on older tech or the new Haswell gear as I have seen their prices is most times comparable on our trading website.I guess I'd only need to buy new ram then if I got that.Plus a techie had told me that old X58 MBs and i7 cpus are being surpassed by the latest i3 processors, both running stock.Don't know if that is true though.

capacitors in the PSU? its a brand new PSU and this booting problem existed on the previous PSU too.I bought the new Corsair PSU,just to eliminate the chance that the problem was the PSU.

Cold boot issues can also be Ram, take all the sticks out except one, then alternate if they appear to boot correctly, or run Memtest on them one at a time.
