For me i find Dying Light to be the epitome of realistic, it's mostly all lighting and shadows...
I will upload a video of it, but i have a couple of screens for it first off. Maxed out but with HBAO+ and ADV DOF off.

Any Day of the Dead/ Dawn of The Dead movie watchers may see what i mean, or at least i hope they do.
Dying Light's world is not the most diverse granted... but oh wow it looks stunning.

The best graphics of any game that I have ever seen is in The Division, even though NPC's lack animated faces (just why?) and the gameplay itself is not so great.

This really set the standard for me, the first time I saw the water and trees in the original farcry I was floored. I had never seen anything like it.

I still love crysis 1 and was probably the follow up for me personally when it came to crisp graphics. It still holds its title for me to this day. Just goes too show how flexible the cryengine really is.

Oblivion was also a big hitter for me. It wasn't so realistic but very pretty. The first time I had experienced HDR.

Half-Life 2 and the two episodes.

No, I'm not nuts recommending a 12 year old game. The dystopian look and feel of this game transcends technical improvements since. It's the best I've ever seen and still epic to play today.

Graphics good for its day? Or graphics that aged well?

For the former, I'd say Warcraft II if only for its fire animation on damaged buildings. I remember that being really pretty when it first came out.
For the latter, I'd say Homeworld. Its graphics aged really well that it didn't really need a remaster on the graphical end.

On another note, if you haven't read the A Pixel Artist Renounces Pixel Art article yet, go do so. There's a difference between high fidelity graphics and good clean presentation.

Metro 2033 and Last light (counting the standard and redux edition)
Vanishing of Ethan Carter (standard and redux edition) --> probably the most beautiful game
GTA V
Witcher 3
Ryse Son of Rome
Watch Dogs (with enhanced reality mod)

Crysis 3 is one of those games with nice graphics. Besides that GTA 5, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Metro Redux also have some desent graphics.

Game is utterly broken, AI can shoot you clean through walls, shooting an enemy through a jeeps gaps will blow the jeep up.
Stealth does not exist.

jaw dropping moments in my pc graphics journey:

wing commander 2. yeah, ega/vga graphics.. but on my IBM AT with 1 meg (or was it 2 megs) memory it was awesome. the more extended/expanded memory you had the more detailed the graphics. also the 1st game with real sound for my original sound blaster.

then gl quake with my voodoo 2. voodoo vs the vga card I had... well.. unfreakinbelievable.

then farcry.

watching this thread for some good games for my r9 390. havend gamed in ages. got hitman and warhammer for free with the cards i bought plus just bought mad max but haven't really played them yet.. no time
