Why do they insist on those enormous triple fan coolers when power consumption and heat is on the decrease.
For the 1060 a single fan would suffice, even the 1070 would be fine with a single 100mm .

They are even hanging the fan off the back of the heat sink now! It's bad enough the coolers are hanging off the card, now the fans have to hang off coolers? It's getting ridiculous.

Sells more, typically looks better and gives better cooling and with that a cooler fan equals longer life time. Better to have a card with 2 fans than one in case a fan fails.

Erhm what? AMD is using Global Foundries 14nm LPP FinFets and Nvidia is using TSMCs 16nm FinFet+ process. GF process has little size advantage, but tsmc process seems to be more suited for larger chips.

I don't think LPP is very well suited chips outside low power mobile asics(it's from samsung after all). IBM should have High performance 14nm SOI FinFET for it's power9 server chips(GF acquired ibms chip production business in 2015), which would be more optimal for cpus or gpus. But haven't heard that since introduction, it might be exclusively available only for ibm power chips.

I guess 99.9% of users would RMA the card if one of those fans would fail, since usually the noise of failing/failed fan is horrible.

Like said, cooler like this on a ~120W TDP card is just nothing but an overkill. Well, I guess kids and other people where the looks of a product is everything, are the target market.

exactly my thoughts.. the answer is obvious though.. all those fans imply more power even if it isnt there and people buy into it.. appearance seems to mean a lot.. he he

Yes but with a single fan it could make the lockup, how i see it if one fails the other should keep the card cool enough to properly shutdown the system.

EDIT:

More fans should allow lower rpm for each fan too, as silence is some thing that a lot people require.

Not as it matters to me as i use a MK-13 fan bracket so if the fans \shroud suck that take care of it.

Its colorful, I expect nothing less than this craziness from them.

Plus even though the cooler is way overkill, it just means it should stay at a lower RPM to keep the card cool meaning a lot quieter in my book.

I am guilty of caring about the looks of stuff in general. But this thing not only has one unecessary fan that adds a potential failure point and reduce case compatibility while giving negligable benefit, but it also looks terrible.

Maybe they could fit a 4th or 5th fan on the side perpendicular to the others ... kinda lame with 3 fans, when Titan X uses 1 fan. It just wants to look like a $300 card.

Not quieter than a single 100mm, which would also run at low RPMs.
As others have said some users are swallowing the more fans/more power snake oil; but how someone who builds a desktop can't read a GPU's specs is beyond me.

I thought it was pretty well known that nVidia was using TSMC's 16nm FinFET, and TSMC's 16nm FinFET is more energy efficient than Samsung's 14nm FinFET AMD is using.

More fans allow for them to run at slower speeds which allows for equivalent or better cooling efficiency while being quieter.

Maybe they could fit a 4th or 5th fan on the side perpendicular to the others ...
Or they could go crazy with the design and end up with something that looks like a Turbine jet motor with one fan on one end and rear exhaust on the other.
A funnel design would allow a 9cm fan to be used.
