Japanese financial newspaper Nikkei reported on Thursday that Funai Electric Company, Japan's last manufacturer of VHS video cassette tape recorders, will end production on the recorders this month. According to Nikkei, the company is halting production due to a declining market, and difficulty in obtaining the supply of parts. Funai had manufactured the units in factories in China, and sold units under the Sanyo brand, among others, in North America.

Nikkei reported sales of 750,000 VHS units for Funai last year.

Sony stopped shipping tapes of the VHS' rival Betamax format last year, and had already stopped producing Betamax video cassette tape recorders in 2002. JVC developed the VHS format, and Sony developed Betamax; the two formats vied for market share during the 1980s and 1990s, the peak of both formats.

Who knew they still made these...? I sure didn't.
I thought beta max died out long long ago lol
But then again its Sony Mr. Proprietary

Wish i still had one of those with my old VHS tapes.Things like Alien, Lethal Weapon, Commando, Rambo, Terminator, Jurrasic park etc. So much nostalgia, people that did not live under a communist/oppressive regime can not imagine the shock we had when all this technology flooded the markets after December 1989. Color TV VHS players/tapes, CDs, Nintendo NES console clones, cable TV, PC's and finally internet.

Its always sad to see a format go. I'm surprised VHS has lasted this long, Especially since Blu-Ray is starting to become more popular in Homes over DVD. I haven't seen a VHS tape new for about 5-6 years! The memories will live strong, Kids of tomorrow will never know the struggle of rewinding these beasts :D

No love loss here, I lived through those times.

Heck, barely even deal with optical media these days. Buy, rip, box up and put in storage; after that it's available on the home server.

I won't miss the format. I think the only one still using it are people like me, who make a side-buck converting old tapes to DVD.

Found old tapes in a shed once mildew was growing on the inside window. I had a thought that someone clueless would still pop this in there vhs/vcr.
