Fanboi-ism at it finest! :D

I have a old (20 years old!) modular Maddog brand 450w that still works as intended. You can get lucky with off brands, sometimes.
I have the oldest possible powersupply, it use to power the old mobos(the ones which didn't require any external processor).
I still have that asus mobo and all its cards(lan, sound, etc). That Psu still works, i sometimes use it to power dvd rom.

PS everything still works!

a hdd needs not more than 10W ! Downclock something and it would be fine with a single PSU
Plenty need more... but not much more. Read some HDD specs (I am thinking Western Digital Caviar Black/Red etc).

I've seen as high as 24 watts for startup. I always round up to 25 watts, just for a safety margin.

Just buy a new psu... Also if the HD is making noise it's more than likely a HD issue than a PSU issue.

+1

Good PSUs - http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html#xtor=EPR-8886 Zebronics and IBall (India) are to be avoided.

If your HDD is noisy then its about to break down. They should be quiet - you shouldn't hear them within your PC case.
Copy data to a new drive. Check it with SMART software or use Seatool's or WD Diagnostic (download).

For an all around usage HDD, I'd go with a 7,200 RPM Blue 1 TB.

I wouldn't I wouldn't get any companies entry level drive. For reliability at a minimum get an HGST/WD black.

HS !
The WD black costs twice the price of
WD blue !!!

1Tb blue = 500gb black
1Tb black = 2x 1tb blue
Why so ?

I currenty own a toshiba hdd and i had bought it for the same price as the WD black.

PS prices of HGST drives are almost identical to that of WD black

Why? What's wrong with the blue? or green? or red? Why black outside of the fact that it performs better than the rest (at least that is what it meant last I understood it, lol)

I'm not saying Seagate doesn't occasionally make a good drive, I have found that they sometimes make awesome stuff, I just have also found them to be wildly inconsistent with reliability between models personally, and as such I'd avoid them.

I have a stack of blue and green on my desk that are all failed waiting to be shipped off to a data recovery lab all within 2-3 years of purchase, some still under warranty. I have had to ship blacks out normally they are 5-7 year old iMac drives. Seagate consumer level drives are at least as unreliable as the blues

Oh, so the few in your hand versus the overall death rate of well less than 5% and I should go by your data set???

I've had a good number Barracudas (why I kept buying them, only god knows) and they have all failed, switched to WD blue, failed. then decided to drop the cash on a WD black, and its all smooth sailing, not to mention you get a 5 year warranty as opposed to a 3 year.

I would spend the extra money on HGST or a WD black to avoid the chance. I got 3 more dead WD blues yesterday, right or wrong it has definitely tainted my view on them.

Statistically WD black owners are more likely to pay for $1800 recoveries, yet another reason I like them.

I havent had a HDD crash since windows 98 around 1998, so I dont understand why so many others have that problem repeatedly. Plus, I've been running my systems 24/7 for years.

Wow, I cant fathom paying $1800 per recovery by a home user.

EDIT:Come to think of that, I still have that HDD, in the form of a wind chime now.
