its all about anonymity - you dont know where that person lives, that person doesn't know where you live and that anonymity gives these people 'power' and they say whatever they want because 99% of the time they won't or can't be held accountable for their actions unless they were using the gaming platform as a means to 'stalk' or harass you.

A good example is CoD - CHILDREN call each other names, ADULTS tend to be racist if they think youre black and ive seen so many cases of this from videos on youtube, namely a guy called 'ELPresador' -- If he never showed his face on his channel, everyone would think he's black, Ive seen in so many of his videos back in the day when he used to play CoD a lot where other players above the age of 18 just start getting all racist because they are losing. Some were racist even when they werent losing. Im sure the same behaviour is exhibited in other MP games...

Back when i was a heavy player of PvP in Guild Wars, I would regularly get other players whispering me abusive comments because they got out played and got their ass beat. People take games too seriously and get really salty about getting their ass beat.

To a lot of these idiot players -- they think their behaviour is acceptable because its the internet.

However if i ever caught my child behaving the same way then i would sure as fuck smack him in the mouth and let him know such behaviour isnt acceptable in my house... Of course he will be allowed to shit talk other players -- sometimes its all apart of the game. but when he takes it too far then I will be there to make sure he gets back on the right track.

And isn't there a mod that allows you to click a block or group of blocks and have it restore back to a point in time? I remember having something like that years ago when mailman played minecraft on my server lol

I use a shell script to do my backups. My minecraft server runs on a ram disk so nothing is saved perm until the shell script runs the backup and then it goes to a replicated server for storage

Huh, maybe that's why I stopped playing MP games... or maybe I had a daughter and merely grew out of my rage-filled MP persona. :p In all seriousness, I used to get worked up in games but, I would usually show some level of restraint and I at least understood that if I was angry enough to punch something, that I should probably stop playing or at the very least, switch games.

I think this is another example of how using a computer dehumanizes people you're conversing with. It's easy to insult and yell at something on a computer screen. I see this on social media as well. People simply don't behave the same way because there isn't a person in front of them who might actually punch them in the face for being a douche bag.

i think the whole attitude on the inet and real life is going down the toilet.
men should be gentleman sometimes and women should not phone so much during driving.
but if you look out of your car window and see peeps waiting on tram+bus stations they all got their head down inside the handy.
so we are all going moar+moar solo-but this is not how the earth works.
we have to stick together

Once the NBN (country wide internet upgrade) hits here, i intend to host VLAN's - literally virtual LAN parties. Should be able to get a 100/40 connection with 100/100 in 2-3 years time.

With internet access blocked and only 'LAN' traffic allowed, should be a blast for all the old school games, since many of my old LAN buddies moved around the country.

I agree, I don't like vulgar abuses at all. I've never did anything like that in my entire life. I was a teenager once and I'm a grown up now, that doesn't change me. Why do you expect them to change? They will always be what they are and they will never be a human.

I think the problem was that the dickbags were and still are maybe one in a hundred people - but when you get a few million gamers online at any given time, bad luck means you're lumped in with 50,000 dickbags for the evening :(

I've watched my son playing multi player online, it doesn't matter what game, half the people are hackers, using bots, the others are doing a bad Rodney Rude impersonation.
It must have something to do with being a teen.

Judging by most of the ages reported I have have shoes older than some of you!

I'm jealous that you guys and gals even get to online game because when we moved out into the country the only internet available was dial up and satellite.

We all know dial up is pitiful, and the satellites ping rate is way too high for online gaming as I am pretty much addicted to first person shooters.

However before we moved out in the country we had a cable connection and I online gamed all the time as there was literally a cult following for Serious Sam Second Encounter.

The key is play with a group of your friends then you can be expected to be treated with respect and if one of your friends is a fanatical idiot cussing and yelling tell him or her your complaints regarding their conduct.

If they understand it will be better for all of the group, if they don't, well you can figure that part out can't you!

The internet gives a certain boldness to those of inadequate strength and personalities, they say things to others they know there will be no repercussions from sitting in their homes.

Those same people do not act like that face to face, it is the same mentality a pack of dogs have, they are extremely bold in a group whereas all alone they would run with their tails between their legs.

If you treat others with the same respect you want them to treat you, you'll be better for it, don't let them drag you down to their level.

Happy online gaming! :)

Online gaming for me is stress relief.

But then again I'm that troll that points out the flaws in everything I see, just like I do here. Some people like that, others start throwing with things (I've literally heard a guy on voice once rip off his KB and toss it through the room, could even hear keycaps flying across the floor)

In my opinion the above is the only way you can and should approach anything on the internet. Once you start taking people on the internet seriously... your life is forfeit.

Well said, and I agree with you. Fortunately for me I like single player games. I've only played a few multiplayer games and the only one I really enjoyed was Guild Wars II. The community was pretty good about cooperating to complete goals and if you got in with a good guild of adults then it cut down on the nonsense that seems to be common on multiplayer games today.

I still dip into WoW a few months a year, and the first thing I do is always to disable general chat. Peace, quiet. I play the open betas for big FPses (if I can) and have never have voice activated. So I've been spared, mostly.

I think the problem was that the dickbags were and still are maybe one in a hundred people - but when you get a few million gamers online at any given time, bad luck means you're lumped in with 50,000 dickbags for the evening :(

This whole paragraph is pure gold! If I had room in my signature block, it would go there.
