To Zen or Not to Zen?

I was running an Athlon XP for 8 years, dropped out of gaming for awhile, decided to jump in back in late 2014. So roughly my parts are 2 years old now despite the cpu arch being 2012.

Someone here on TPU benchmarked games on Core i3, i5 and i7 and I think some AMD chip as well and differences were rather small except in few CPU demanding games. So, anyone with mid end i5 or higher end FX procesor should be just fine for roughly the same price and end performance.

A lot of people forgot AMD was dominating the CPU market until upper management screwed things up and Intel saw their demise and quickly capitalized on it. We can still all thank AMD for their push of the 64bit back in 2000

Im actually more interested in Zen APUs, for laptops to be precise. Gotta buy my wife a new laptop for a reasonable amount of money with a solid cpu and a gpu that can run most games at 1080p (details not relevant).

Last I heard APUs are farther down the line. And most likely Intel + Nvidia will still be beating it on performance/watt if low end Pascal cards are available. Should be a big improvement over Carrizo, but it's anybody's guess if it will be the best choice.

IF Zen is going to be the big comeback for AMD, then im giving away my I7-5820K unless Zen cant keep up in multitread programmes. For gaming Im going console and is personally out of the pc race.

If you can wait, wait, if you can't then don't it's simple. What I heard of Zen perf that it's probably around Haswell performance IPC wise, but IPC is based apart of maximum clocks. We need to know the maximum clocks of Zen to know what it's absolute performance is like, IPC is therefore not enough to actually know if Zen is good (for gamers) or not. I'd say it will be good, I'm somewhat optimistic about Zen, looking on all the work they put into it, combined with the few informations we have.

I didn't forget, I just recall the underhanded BS Intel pulled during the AXP and A64 Days with OEMs. If it wasn't for X86-64 royalties having to be paid to AMD, they would be down to just GPUs.

And though everyone thinks it has all been settled, but Intel still hasn't paid AMD one cent in the 7 years since the judgement. Talk about underhanded business practices...but it is common in the corporate world.

The court cases were settled in 2009, in the US Intel agreed to pay AMD $1.25 billion USD to settle all outstanding court cases in the US and several overseas. In the UK there was a seperate court case which also went against Intel, the courts there requiring Intel to pay AMD €1.06bn, the largest ever fine in the UK. Since then Intel has been fighting tooth and nail to find a way not to pay the fine and while they have not succeeded in their legal battle they have succeeded in not paying AMD one single cent.

I'll probably buy into Zen if it reviews well. I think that supporting AMD is important to do.
I gave my FX-9590 system to my son recently, so right now all I have is Intel systems (an i5-6600K, i7-4770K, i7-4790K) and an i7-6850K coming tomorrow.

When you consider that my FX-9590 box played all of my favorite games without any issues, I feel that Zen will probably be good as well.

BTW: All of my Intel boxes do fine. My i5-6600K is pretty fast.

I am a huge fan of AMD, and tried to stay away, but recently switched to Intel...I'll be the first to say that the change is pretty crazy. Intel doesn't seem as "snappy" at the desktop as AMD did, but the difference in raw power and temperature is pretty crazy. I really need AMD to bring out something phenomenal with Zen, but if it ends up being faster than my 6700K, even just a little bit, I'll probably switch back.

For clarification, because the quote is a little misleading: they paid the US judgement, this is talking about the UK judgement...but it's over a billion as well.

My Rig boots in less than a Minute so I cant complain lol. If Zen is a big Hit this rig wont see watercooling and be dropped to default speed for the misses.

I would wait until benchmarks are out.
I have no plans to buy anything until Zen is out.
The newer Intel stuff is just not as sturdy as one would like it to be.

This is the opposite of my experiences with Intel CPUs. Are your power supplies of good quality?
Is your electricity/power to your house working right?

The last time I had an Intel CPU fail, it turned out to be a grounding issue at my house. I was going through Microwave ovens too.

That was my last AMD rig too I loved that 170 I still have the Mobo(Abit AT-8 32X brilliant board and well 2x16 slots way back then)and the Opty. I replaced it with a C2D E6600. I swear the old Opty felt way snappier than the C2D rig that replaced it.
