Is the jump to 1440P really worth it?

I'm okay with 1080p gaming, but desktop usage needs 2560x1440, or at least 1920x1200.

Personally it was worth it for me. I went from gaming at 1680 x 1050 on a 22" monitor to 2560 x 1440 on a 25" IPC. It's only a 60hz But the pixel density makes everything very sharp.

1440p is so so. Strongest single card you can afford from which ever camp and the appropriate sync. 4K is a different beast. That's a jump.

For me it was worth it. I noticed a big difference in quality but I need to also say that I went from a 27" 1080p to a 27" 1440p monitor so obviously the pixel density was much improved with the 1440p monitor.

Edit: The reason I mentioned about going from a 27" 1080p to a 27" 1440p is that if you are using that 21.5" 1080p monitor in your specs and you step up to a 27" 1440p you might not notice as much of a difference.

I find it very strange that people would buy a monitor now, just before we're about to witness a big revolution.
Most people keep their monitor for much longer than any other PC component, although it is - imho - the most important part since it is basically the gateway to everything you do with your machine.
So if I were to invest in a monitor, I'd better be damn sure, I wouldn't buy something that'll be obsolete in the very forseeable future.

Like everything new.( I assume you're talking of HDR) I would need a new GFX card to even take advantage of it and well that card doesn't exist yet. The cycle continues.

I'm supposed to receive my new 1440p monitor today :)

I think I'll be happy with this for at least another 5+ years, at least until the next 'innovative' tech. Resolution can only get you so far, and I'm actually more looking forward to true HDR monitors and games.

I've got one of these:
For me it was worth it. I noticed a big difference in quality but I need to also say that I went from a 27" 1080p to a 27" 1440p monitor so obviously the pixel density was much improved with the 1440p monitor.

That's one of the reasons I went with the 25" 1440p, I knew I wanted 1440p And was deciding between 25 and 27 inch models, when I found the Asus PB258Q on sale on the Egg. Sure it was IPS, only 60hz and no Freesync/G-sync but I don't need that anyway. Between the price being almost $100 off and the pixel density I think I got a good deal. Only bad thing is I had to turn around and replace my almost brand new (free) R9 380 2Gb with a $330 R9 390 8GB because the 380 didn't have enough memory to play 1440p at the quality and framerates I wanted. But to be honest I wanted to upgrade te GPU anyway, as all this was bought with tax refund money.

I went from 24" 1080p TN to 25" 1440p IPS and it is indeed nice with the increase in PPI. That's why I didn't get a 27" as the PPI difference didn't seem big enough.

The only niggle I have is Windows 10 doesn't have great text scaling. I run at 125% and some windows screens like device manager is blurry as is origin. You can turn it off for individual programs though and the text is legible if a little small.

But 144hz 1440P is like buying a second hand car.. except i can barely drive the monitor with even a 1070. Unless i play CSGO only on it LMAO.
I too have a MG279Q(got it for half the price due to it having a stuck pixel and frame skipping at 144Hz) for about 3 weeks now, been on 1440p since 2013 owned a 280x two GTX660 in SLI and a GTX970 all can deliver >60 fps with the right settings. For 120Hz i got a 980Ti, but except Witcher 3 the 970 would pump out 60 fps with some things turned off like HBAO+ or AA.
Also consider a 120/144Hz monitor if you play twitch shooters like CSGO, not only it eliminates screen tearing but that extra response time might give you an edge.

The vid was a terrible example of "advice" on 1440p.

1. If a display loooks horrible on less than native res, it's not a very good one
2. He admits he did it stupidly on impulse without an adequate GPU
3. He never once mentions anything about the refresh rate
4. He never details what FPS he got on what games

IMO, 1070s are best for 1080p. Yes, they are a bit overkill currently for that res, but by end of next yr, consoles will be 4-6 TFLOP capable, pushing devs to make games more graphics intense.

IMO you need a 1080 for 1440p, and a 1080 Ti (when they're available) for 4k. And that is not just for current use, but best case scenario going forward. Because who wants to waste money upgrading every 2 yrs like that fool in the vid?

It comes down to whether you want your PC to be a stable and enjoyable gaming platform for at least 3 yrs, or have it turn into a regrettable money pit. You really need to think ahead with such decisions to avoid big mistakes.

I didn't watch the video since I know the answer but going from a (very good for it's day) Samsung 1920x1200 TN panel to a cheap 1440p IPS panel the jump was definitely worth it in terms of screen space, resolution, pixel density, color and contrast. Probably the most noticeable improvement of my PC that I've made.

But there is a huge difference from 1080p to 3k, in picture quality..
So if you have a screen, that is like 30" or more (I can't vouch for smaller, but maybe them as well), you wold definitely see a huge visual improvement, going from 1080p to 3k.

I would say more like 50" and up where it's a huge difference. I've been gaming for some time on a 32" TV, and 1600x900 is my go to res in games that I struggle on settings with, and it's hardly distinguishable from 1080p, and pretty much same ratio as 1080p to 1440p.

1440p makes a lot of sense on 50" and up though, esp if it's 60Hz, because most TVs are anyway, and you need a LOT more GPU power to run the higher refresh ones. The problem there becomes having to use a less than native res though, since displays in that size are TVs, and not 1440p.

Honestly though, if a display looks horrible at a res lower than native, it's not a very good display IMO. My 32" Panasonic Alpha IPS looks fine on 1600x900.

Honestly TVs are a different story. While your 32 is a small fella and may well be on your desk right in front of you, most would not have theirs sitting 2 feet from their eyeballs and for that and a few other reasons, TVs should be cautiously compared to a monitor. Latency being one of the other reasons, I mention this because some talk of CSGO in the thread - it's not such a big deal in many scenarios, but if you're a keen twitchy PvP player, then it matters.

Running below native and looking ugly or not has little to do with the display either. That comes down to the individual games style/texture support/engine and how much stretching as why a below native res may look horrid. There is also a subjective element, similar to some who will happily game at 50+ FPS and others will think it's utterly unplayable at such a low frame rate. A 27inch 1440p monitor 2 feet from my eyes running a game at 1080p will look noticeably worse *to me*, running 1440p on a 4K TV that's 7 feet from my eyes will often be hard to distinguish the difference - some games shine, some don't.

It most certainly does. Some displays scale far better than others, irregardless of the game being played.

I agree with all your other points but I would question the wisdom of running a monitor at non native resolution nowadays.

Acer K272HUL Black 27" WQHD 1ms 60hz :toast:, but still use 1080 on couple things.
Since the move from 1050 it's been fantastic
Very much worth getting even budget 1440p

Benchmark Scores I got some numbers.
It most certainly does. Some displays scale far better than others, irregardless of the game being played.

It doesn't matter how fancy your display is, panel type, energy rating, luminance... When you set a display to render something with fewer pixels than the display physically has, it doesn't change the physical pixel count but it still has to fill the surplus with something which generally results in a less pleasant image (IMO*). There are only 2 reasons as far as I'm concerned as to why someone would say it looks good to them, either they have low standards, or the combination of size of the display and distance means the difference is not reasonably discernible (Unless you're considering that as some displays "scale" better).

Also, kudos on using the word "irregardless".

If there were reasonable priced 144Hz 4k monitors I'd say get that ,its future proof for 5+years and will do 1440p ,I love my 4k and play all games at 4k at very high settings (some compromise is sometimes necessary)fine.
My only regret is mines not going past 60Hz (unless someone knows a hack for that ?? (Samsung 850R)).
