Got my first major bug : loading save game and all of my landmarks/waypoints discoveries are gone, no waypointsicons at all.

My only major problem with this game is you're supposed to be an intergalactic explorer, all fancy with weapons, tools, and equipment, then why on earth there's no implementation of ground map?
At least make the beacon reusable, detecting waypoint, and or can be used to create a custom marker so I can use it to actually know where I am and where am I going.
Or make the scanning system as the way to create a map (scanning = reveal and mark waypoint on a map).

I spent two hours in a space station where they were buying one item at 100% markup. I would run to the landing pads, buy them up, then run back to the galactic trader and sell them. I wound up with 4 million units by the time I was done.

Wow, that's nice.

I spent hours, 7-8 hours I think, mining Emerit and Gold in one planet, sell them all and ended up with 6 million units. Then I found a mass landing pads (not a space station, just some kind of an airport or something) and wait for a lot of spaceships, then I bought this ship for 5.2M units :

It's blue! not beige or another boring spaceship color :

This fix works wonders.
Also if you are like me and hate horizontal tearing almost as much as stuttering, the game is in OpenGL and the triple buffered vsync forced from nvidia control panel works quite well ... in control panel, max. prerendered frames = 1, triple buffering = on and vsync = on, and in game vsync = off and frame limit = max.

These settings seemed to have helped my game. I was getting some bad stuttering, but after changing these in Nvidia control panel, and also installed the latest Nvidia driver, as compared to an older one I was using, the game seems to run much smoother overall. I am still getting an occasionall stutter, but it seems to be much better than it was.

Today new Nvidia "Game Ready" driver should come out (for NMS) + devs promised a patch "early this week". Looking forward.

devs said there was a 'shader caching' issue that smoothed out after an hour or so of gameplay.

Sounds fun, I always like messing around under the hood what file/files do you mess with? Never heard of Cheat Engine.

So. After a full weekend of.... let's say dedication to NMS... My two cents in case you're still on the fence and having to judge by Reddit/Youtube/Steam Review screamers which I generally don't like too much;

- Performance
First thing I do when I start a game is go into visual options. Done that here too, because on first startup the game ran at 20 fps and low CPU/GPU util. Turned off Vsync, frame rate cap to Max, and that worked for a glorious 120 fps with the occasional stutter. No real complaints, had expected a stutter now and then. High memory footprint, 2600mb on 780ti.

After a few hours of play, the stutters were gone. Frame rates between 70-120 fps, no real indication what causes the variation, but I reckon its the terrain generation doing it. Draw distance is 'meh'. You see popup. You do get used to it. It is just enough, but could really be better for PC.

- Gameplay
Starts off promising, and deepens a bit as you go. Atlas storyline is my main thing right now, got two Stones so far, AtlassPass v1 acquired and then went on exploring, but also picked one option to find my first Black Hole (which is where I logged off yesterday, to savor that first experience for tonight :)). The Atlas line gives a good sense of purpose which is what the game really needs. Inventory management is integral part of the game, too, and you can increase all inventories by upgrading, acquiring new multitools and ships. Individual multitool (which is both a gun and mining tool) and ships cannot be upgraded in capacity, 'bigger and better' versions are for sale or to be found in the game. You can pay other spacefarers that you meet for their ship, or go out on planets and find stranded/crashed vessels that you can repair and put back into action for free.

The game is full to the brim with various locations and event types, there are quite a lot of them and while the individual outposts on planets are pretty similar, the tasks and puzzles they offer are quite nice and varied. The procedural generation has its patterns that you can quickly make out, but still manages to surprise from time to time, which is quite an achievement. The activities themselves, like mining, exploring, trading, are also well balanced and offer some neat gameplay elements. Although I still have no idea why those Sentinels bother me when I try to mine stuff, it seems a bit 'tacked on' to provide a gameplay element and force players into combat.

All in all, I'm quite happy with NMS, but I went in without the internet storm fresh in my mind. And avoiding that, judging the game for what it is, I can easily say that for a procedurally generated game it does the trick much better than anything before it. The way they mix progression with free exploration is done very well, the game has a purpose rather than 'exploring aimlessly' (which you can still do) which is what many procedural games tend to miss out on.

Does it need polishing and fixes? Sure, but it's very much playable and all I've had was CTD's when playing in Borderless (play in Fullscreen and don't Alt-tab and you're gonna be fine), and one returning lockup when opening a technology container. Minor issues with easy workarounds. I really don't get what all the fuss is about.

I explained that to myself that sentinel drones are automated guardians of resources that belong to the local alien species, in a way I'm trying to improve my relations to an alien culture by learning their language and illegally mining their resources and selling them back to them to become rich enough to buy better ship and craft more warp cells to travel and do the same thing to next alien species ... until I reach the first quest objective

sentinels seem placed in to fill a large gameplay void - namely that the aliens themselves are totally 100% identical as far as combat goes. It's a decent distraction, but not one that holds up for long.

Agreed. Also the fact that I can take down AT-ST sized walkers with a mining laser is... odd :p (found a fully upgraded multi-tool, 19 slotter with a healthy 14 slots dedicated to mining laser, it's a portable rail gun now) Tis a shame logic is off here, it would've been easy to give that some more body.

On the other hand I do like that combat can always be avoided, I think the real meat of this game is the immersive aspect and just making your own story as you go along. Two aspects I happen to fancy alot :)

Spent my evening searching for crashed ships and upgrading when possible. Many ships I find are one slot lower than my current but every once in awhile the crashed ship will be a step up. I'm now flying a 29 slot ship and on my way to another crash site. Please let it be a 30 slot!

I really think they should allow us to sell our old ships. It would be a great way to make some extra cash. Or at the very least pay a fee to have our extra ship transported to a space station; maybe be able to rent a landing bay as a personal garage or something.

Hopefully down the road here... they will have a separate inventory for ship upgrades, and resources. It doesn't make much sense that you would have upgrades included in your ships regular 'inventory'. Logically they would be installed on the exterior of the ship either with the engine, or guns etc.

I agree it would be nice to be able to sell your old ships, and even old multi-tools. You can however, transfer ownership to a crashed ship, and salvage any upgrades it may have for some free resources, and then transfer back to the ship you had.

Yes I have been doing that. It is a great way to get some harder to find loot.

So, I'm thing about buying this game, but worried I might not play it.. I've tried ED a few times since I bought it, but to me it gets boring and extremely difficult to fly (It looks really good in my Vive). Can you play this with keyboard and mouse for FPS and XBox one controller for flying? I don't have a Hotas.. I'm torn.. lol

Yeah, that's how I'm playing - keyboard and mouse on land and xbone controller for flying.

PS. Add nms.exe to Doom 3 profile using Nvidia Inspector, very nice FPS boost.

Yes you can switch off between mouse/controller.

I honestly just play with an Xbox controller overall, Ill occasionally use the mouse if its needed for combat, but 95% of the time I use the controller anyway.

My only complaint with this game would be the visuals could be cleaner. I've seen loads of pre-release screenshots that just pop and have very clean graphics. Very detailed and sharp.

In game though there seems to be a big difference from those pre release screens and what I see on the PS4 and PC versions. I'm all together content as is but I would be happier if they fix this.

Upscaled 720p. I've tried using DSR and it makes no difference. Hopefully they get the game to play a native resolutions.

oh is the game running at 720p?? then up-scaling to 1080p? THAT would make the difference I see for sure!! Yeah I would love to see a fix for that.

Hmm... Well after reading through most of the comments and a few reviews, notably ARSTechnica's, I'm gonna hold off for a bit.

I appreciate the technology behind the simulation of the universe...but it seems like the paint job of a game over the top is really lacking. I can't justify spending $60 on it at this point...maybe I'll wait for the Steam Winter Sale and see how things are faring.

On a positive note, I do own what was considered the "poor man's NMS" before NMS was released (doesn't seem to be called that anymore tho...), a title called Rodina. Pretty sweet little indie game that's keeping me very entertained. Seems like it does have a few similarities to NMS, but there's no resource gathering (at least yet...don't recall if that was gonna happen). Just worked on creating my custom ship interior and getting better at the hectic combat when you get near a planet (which is HUGE btw). I'm sure it's no better than NMS, and it's got a helluva lot less polish to it I would imagine...but it's 1/3 of the price and has provided me with a handful of very fun hours thus far! Enough about that...if you're interested, check it out. I will say its performance is excellent on my laptop, PC, her laptop, etc. I will also say the story is pretty damn good thus far! :D

I will also add there's a free demo of the full game to try that I believe is maintained at the same version of the full game (1.22 irrc). Maybe someone that owns NMS could compare...

One thing that disappointed me about NMS is it seems they limit you in ridiculous ways to control your game experience...and they didn't add enough to cover up what they were doing. Hopefully they'll keep developing and adding as they've stated and that NMS will blossom from this. I'm also glad to see some of you getting good or really good performance...but 720p upscaling is shameful for PC's in this day and age. But they got the game released and the simulation seems to be working well overall...now if the graphics and gaming experience can catch up to that, they'll have a GotY edition soon enough. Though I can only go off of what I've read and watched on YouTube thus far... :)

Game running at 720 then just upscale? so the ingame SSAA doesn't do anything? Also, vram usage around 2.5Gb, same with actual game size? :O

Edit:
new nvidia drivers are up for grabs for No Man's Sky (also a release driver for mobile 10 series GPUs)

I'm torn.. lol

The flying can easily be done with KB+Mouse too. 90-100% of all flight actions are oversimplified, and there is a serious amount of correction going on. For example, it is literally impossible to crash into a planet, the game will avert your course from the ground. You can pulse drive straight into the atmosphere and immediately get your speed corrected automatically when you get close enough, and then the vessel will even align with the surface for you. You literally can't go wrong with fliying. It's there, but its mostly to get to places, there is no skill involved. Docking in stations is 100% full auto. It's miles away from what ED has achieved with its great simulation of velocity and scaling of velocity, the timing aspect that ED introduces to jumping in and out of planets and instances is not there in NMS. Dogfights are similar. While you can fly around, it really does seem to come down to inventory management in combat (you can recharge shields with oxides, but have to do it in flight, game doesn't pause) and after that it's mostly a relative power comparison - enemies do attack runs that you can hardly avoid and your weapons have massive aim assist.

About the internal resolution, may very well be 720p or there is a LoD scaler for render resolution. Render res seems to decrease with distance. Get up close and edges are sharp. Either way, it being OpenGL based does introduce some issues. I couldnt get DSR to work for example to crank up the render res - and the game needs a *restart* to apply a resolution change, like wut?
