Microsoft controversially brings cumulative updates to W7 & W8.1

TIME TO grab your indignation sticks and riot, because Microsoft has taken away one of the main things that made keeping Windows 7 and 8 attractive.

Starting in October 2016, Windows 7 and 8.1 (Windows 8 being the defunct ginger stepchild) will receive cumulative updates once a month instead of individual ones.

You may recall that this was a trick already used by Microsoft to bury a version of its GWX nagware last year, secreted as it was inside an important security update.

Sounds like that much more of a reason to either block updates which many are likely already doing (especially with the Win10 GWX stuff over the past year) or go Linux to me.

Understandable that some areas do have bandwidth issues or limits, and that does suck especially in this day and age that the higher-developed countries aren't doing more to help with that. Clearly you can see MS is not concerned about that here, and I'm assuming their bean counters don't care much for it either... shame.

But there are places in the US too who have to watch their bandwidth too, for example when a update comes for Arma 3 he has to go a internet cafe shop to get the update.

we like to think the US is covered but it's far from it.

I do not see any real reason for panic yet, 1 update instead of the usual 8-10 is a good thing. And they WON'T be huge, delta patching and all that. Unless, of course, you get RTM Win 7 SP1 install. But in that case there would be ~200+ updates with similar total size.
Only real issue is MS borking up some fix included in the cumulative update, which, unfortunetaly, has happened.

It makes it hard to isolate what they're doing to your computers. They now will have carte blanche to inject all of the crap that they want to.

Yeah, only reason i hide the ones i do is due to system problem due to them.

Last one our laptop got was a 122MB update and it just keep trying install it even if it's failed god knows how many times, now no other updates are showing now that one is hidden.

Never mind the crap they done to the GPS-360.

The only issue with people calling this "moaning" is that it's actually a legitimate complaint. In older days companies had a term for this: "Feedback." Companies used to actually solicit this. Not so much anymore I'm afraid, now they have legions of fans to beat down the apparently harmful criticism so they can focus on useful things like "hololens" and "Cortana."

Honestly, Microsoft deserves to be kicked to the curb if they push their monopoly too hard. The question is when they will annoy us enough.

I will take issue with the articles style and tone however. The Inquirer has always been to much of an editorialized publication for my taste.

You really don't know what a monopoly is, do you?

You can have a free product and still be a monopoly. That said, Windows 10 is not a free product. Not anymore, not ever. You bought it with Windows 7/8/8.1. This is the only reason we should still be allowed to complain. If it truly was a free "service oriented" product without a retail attachment, I'd shut up. They have not done that yet.

It's also worth pointing out there is nothing inherently wrong with Linux for gaming. There are a million things wrong with MS policy towards gaming, however.

Do you have any grasp of the words your using?

A monopoly means a company monopolizes it's market. Microsoft primarily makes OSes. The OS space is predominantly dominated by Microsoft. It doesn't matter what version of the OS they are running or whether it costs money or makes it via snooping/advertising/selling of data shenangigans. If the company monopolizes it's market and for the most part has no comparable competition, it is considered a monopoly.

Microsoft monoplizes the market in the OS sphere, therefore they are a monopoly. This is economics 101.

Also, a lot of non-hippie users make careers out of using linux/unix. It DOMINATES the things that run the internet, you know. It's bad in the consumer OS space because it's not a consumer OS, but it could easily be made to be one if MS doesn't clue in. Ubuntu has already made shittons of headway there and the uptick in games supporting linux is no coincidence to Microsofts behavior.

So me as a common joe and a normal PC user is now a fanboy because i do not moan about Windows? but only moan when it actually makes sense to like the upgrade from Windows 7 being less than stellar and causing BSOD issues due to wrong auto configurations?

Windows 10 is a more modern OS than Windows 7, there is no hiding that. I wouldn't use linux kernel 2.6 today either. But that doesn't mean that they don't have their uses as they are still supported products and customers have basic rights.

What you just described is exactly the issue. Microsoft has a huge disconnect between itself and it's users. One day, this will cost them. It will not be immediate. I can remember another such company... "Yahoo." I wonder how they are doing?

I have a vested interest in keeping Microsoft alive. It brings my state tons of money and pays a lot of taxes here. Some of my relatives work for it. So I'd very much urge you to not think of me as an enemy of Microsoft, as I'm anything but. I think it's killing itself from the inside. Ironically, many of it's employees I know agree (as does Bill Gates in some ways, I might add).
