Black Ops 3 spiking all over

I used to run this game with mixed high/medium settings with a steady 70-80 FPS on a R9 290. I just got a GTX 1060 and I reformatted everything to start fresh. Installed the game and it plays from 20FPS - 120FPS.
Extremely frustrating and almost unplayable because of the unbelievable spiking. I don't understand. Had everything on high, then turned everything to medium and I'm still getting spikes. OCing the card 150 MHz on both core/mem didn't help either. I'm using the latest drivers. Anyone?

Sounds like a possible driver issue. Overclocking it won't help.

Was using 372.54 drivers, I used DDU to uninstall and installed 368.81 drivers. Didn't help, same issues.

I just checked the RAM usage in Afterburner and it seems that you're right about the RAM Freedom. But why would it be maxing out my 8GB, on a game no less? Is there any solution to this?

Black Ops was said to eat all the RAM it can get it's hands on so take that as you will.

Yeah, uninstall the game or buy more ram.

I prefer uninstalling because its free.

The settings are on all medium with motion blur and AA off (with the 1060).

From what I've been reading, it seems to be an Nvidia driver problem like qubit has been saying. I'm going to do some more research, but it doesn't look good.

So basicly, you downgraded from a R9 290 which is straight up faster than a 1060 in many many many ways and you are now suffering the consequences.

290 has over 3x more memory bandwidth, 1GB more onboard memory and 4x the shader processing units, just under 3x texture rate & just under twice the pixel rate.

go back to your 290 or turn all the fancy eye candy off because the 1060 as such is limiting your performance.

You can't just directly compare GPU specs like that. They're two very different breeds. From what I've seen of the 1060, it trades blows with even the 390x in some cases, trailing not far behind it in others. It shouldn't be slower than a R9 290.

^ No R9 290 in this one but a 390X is a slight bit faster.


the 1060 might perform better in other games but in this one case where the game in question is BLoPs 3 its a bit slower. Ive been point at desktop ram being the issue a few times but its been ignored and I have no answer to my question if the same stuttering issue has been happening on other games so i'll leave it at that.

Aye those kind of spikes is not low GPU power, it's something else.

Strangely enough, the only thing he changed was the GPU, and he even did a fresh install of Windows...

You didn't happen to make some basic mistake like forgetting to plug the power connector in did you?

Power connector definitely plugged in lol. Everything is as it should be. I just checked my task manager and the usage stats seem very odd on a simple boot up of Windows 7 to a plain desktop background.
No programs running at all. Had 0-1% CPU and about 1.5GB usage. However, when the small Windows Update balloon popped up, the usage went up significantly to between 25-29% CPU and between 3-4GB RAM constant.

After completely disabling Windows Update, usage went down a little bit, CPU down to around 20% and RAM down to around 2GB. It helped a little bit in BO3, but not enough to be comfortable.

Whether your new card is a bit slower than your old one or not, it still shouldn't be behaving like that and regardless of brand.

1 Do you see this problem in other games? eg another call of duty, or a different series of games eg GTA5 etc
2 In the driver control panel, set power management for maximum performance and single monitor performance mode. This will increase framerate, sometimes a little, sometimes a lot and may well smooth out those spikes. Make sure that you do it for the profile for that specific game rather than just the general one, to ensure that it's being applied
3 Do you have another card of similar performance to try? (nvidia or amd)
4 It's possible that your system RAM is being maxed out like freedom is suggesting, but it seems a bit unlikely, since requiring more would limit the market for this game. Put more in if you can to try and eliminate this possibility. If memory usage is hitting around 85% or more then you have a problem and need more RAM

stop focusing on the video card, check your CPU temps. You could be thermal throttling the CPU.

What are the gpu temps as you have turned off the Auto fan speed and is set to manual 50%
Seems like memory leak from the game as using all the ram + page file
Check for game updates/patches

Turn off power saving features as reinstalled the OS- power option , check cpu limit
Set in nvidia control panel to max performance
Turn on the auto fan speed

Whats all running at the moment as for a fresh install you have many benchmarking / overclocking app installed

Black Ops on PC has been notorious for its memory footprint, not just VRAM but system memory, it easily goes past the 6GB barrier for just that game

Bottom line, it's a shitty console port. Let's face facts

If things are stuttery, check temps, and in case of this title, RAM. You used DDU to swap cards so I doubt it is driver related.

I've posted my max CPU and GPU temps in the first SS after playing BO3 for 1 hour.

I've identified the problem of the OS having unnecessarily high CPU and RAM usage before any application like BO3 is even open. Like I said before, after disabling Windows Update completely, the RAM and CPU usage went down. It was enough to see a noticeable improvement in the stuttering while playing.

Windows Update active = 3-4GB RAM usage, 25-30% CPU usage
Windows Update disabled = 1.8GB RAM usage, 20% CPU usage

Strange why the system would even utilize that much for basically nothing. Oh well. The big stuttering problem has now become a much smaller stuttering problem.

When Zen comes out I might consider getting a new rig altogether with 16GB DDR4. Either that or Kaby Lake I don't know. But until then, I don't feel it's worth it to get another 8GB of DDR3 for one game.
