I love shuttle xpcs... they're awesome, expecially the old x79 xpc was so cool, wish they'll be making an x99 version...

I still don't know why they don't use some sort of closed loop water cooler in the higher end models...
I mean, we all know that Asetek produces an AIO cooler with a 92mm radiator that would be a great addition to this xpc. There would be many advantages by using it... lower temps (maybe not that much but in such a closed space every degree less is better), looks better, the heat-pipes would not dump heat inside of the case by irradiation, because closed loop coolers have isolated tubes...
That's what I think anyways...

Nice review. Not that bad considering the price, but I can see how one could build a custom mITX/mATX system of similar size for a similar amount of cash - with a bit of effort.

I wish you had found the time to at least break open the PSU (if not thoroughly test it) and take a few snaps, but oh well. I suppose the work queue you have to clear out is quite daunting

I wish Shuttle would actually spray the back of their cases as well as the front and sides. That bare metal just looks so cheap.

Any idea who the PSU OEM is? Because according to its label it can deliver 588W on 12V, yet is only rated for a total of 500W. I'd be pretty leery about trusting that...

I have actually put one of these Shuttle PSUs on a group of load testers, but this was quite some time ago. It was the older model though, with 80 PLUS Bronze efficiency while the new one is Silver.

Well I'm a doofus, the UL number (E190414) is right there on the label which makes this an FSP-built unit. And the load test results are decent and it's certainly using good-quality caps, so I retract my previous comment. I do think FSP needs to update the label though; last time I saw "select the correct voltage" was on a non-universal-input PSU, and that was many moons ago.

I looked at buying this to replace my old Shuttle PC but in the end built a mini itx system.

It looks good and I think you can now use a mini itx motherboard if you wanted to replace it but you are stuck with the shuttle psu. I preferred to be able to use standard sized parts for easy upgrade/replacement.

I think they have improved what they needed, bigger and better PSU and a fan at the front but I wonder how it handles over clocking since it supports it with the Z170 chip set? If it can't handle it they should have just used the H170 chip set.

It's rated for up to 95W TDP, @crmaris used a 91W CPU and that was hitting over 80 degrees at load. So I'd say overclocking on this is a no-go and using Z170 is pointless, H170 would've given you every other feature and been cheaper.

Skylake only supports HDMI 1.4 without an Alpine Ridge chip, so given that @crmaris's teardown didn't reveal such a chip, I'm going to say no. If you need HDMI 2.0 you'll have to wait for Kaby Lake.
