Once again, the nvidia geforce experience is failing, showing there are updates, but not allowing me to access them. This has been an endless struggle on this machine from day 1. Nvidia does NOT answer their feedback or help inquiries either. Screenshot attached. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the card software/drivers several times, it seems like it is fixed, but then does this again after every newly available update. And, the most annoying part, it wont be dismissed from my taskbar (it persistently relaunches its broken self regardless of my task kills, even though I have unchecked update notification options and closed it many times), so I have to look at the icon with an exclamation mark constantly reminding me that it's broken. I've half the mind to just go edit the file name to stop the taskbar notification program. It's broken anyway. I'm giving it one last ask here, does anyone know how to fix this? If not, I'm going to attack the file directly. nvidiasucks.JPG

Just manually download the latest driver and install it, and have Windows hide the Geforce experience icon?

Just manually download the latest driver and install it, and have Windows hide the Geforce experience icon?

Windows hide only makes it an arrow instead of going away. I don't like arrows any better than broken icons. I need to know what's running, I can't have even one hidden icon, because that makes the "hide" arrow, and then you do not know if anything else is hiding in there unless you click to check, and then I'm bombarded with the broken nvidia icon all over again. I have downloaded the latest driver, the problem isn't that I can't get it, it's that the update program will be broken like this every single time a new update is released, and sometimes, they do not even apply for my machine, meaning I have this broken icon for sometimes months and months. Is it too much to ask for software that works without errors?

Have you activated beta updates in GFE? Maybe a newer version helps.

The problem with not using GFE is you lose Shadowplay too which is a useful tool to record gameplay.

GFE is very useful. Painless driver updates and it tells me when they're required too, so it's all done with a couple of mouse clicks and no faffing at all.

I've had a couple of minor problems with it over the last couple of years and that's it. It's also got that handy ShadowPlay feature for recordig gameplay.

Dunno why all the hate for it.

Install Autoruns, then you will know exactly what's running on your system. You'll have more control over it, too. You'll be able to selectively kill off NVIDIA components with this.

I already have autoruns. That program doesn't allow me to permanently kill off a process as far as I am aware, it just shows me it's running, which it clearly is already anyway.

Don't install that application next time. Just adjust your games manually. ;)

NVE is MEH at best, particularly to anyone with half a clue or wants to take a few minutes to learn.

I don't need any of nvidia's software to make my graphics card work? What components can I safely uninstall and still have full functionality?

Uninstall Geforce experience. Install drivers manually from Nvidia's site when you choose to. Pick which components you install as some are only necessary for VR or other blah.

The card will still work ok without all the software? I don't use VR, or 3D, or even play games much.

Have you activated beta updates in GFE? Maybe a newer version helps.

The problem with not using GFE is you lose Shadowplay too which is a useful tool to record gameplay.

I have not. I don't play games much, I certainly don't record doing so.

It's NEVER worked right for me, not a single day of working right. I guess you got lucky.

Got it. So everyone says basically uninstall all the nvidia software, and then just download the current drivers at the nvidia website, right? So I go there, find my card, download the package, choose custom install, and uncheck everything? Do I really uncheck EVERYTHING? It will install drivers without any other nvidia software onboard?

well if you don't use shadowplay you mostly don't need GFE ... just do a custom driver install and untick GFE case ... it's not a vital software for your card to work properly ...

easy as A.B.C.

because it's a hassle and a useless crap?

GFE is very useful. Painless driver updates and it tells me when they're required too, so it's all done with a couple of mouse clicks and no faffing at all.
well manual update on release (aka checking TPU for new driver and downloading them) is also painless... specially when doing a custom install and unticking GFE case ...

automated update via nvidia or windows is the best way to f*ck up your installation, i prefer to wait and see for a bit if any other user report issues, before updating ... and surely not autoupdating ... i am lazy but not enough for that

I'd just get the latest driver downloaded.

Then use DDU to remove the current driver - choose the option to boot into Safe Mode. Once the current driver is uninstalled, have the DDU program restart your computer. Then install the latest driver and do a custom install.

All you need to check to have installed is the Phsyx and driver. The driver software, if I remember correctly, you cannot uncheck. Everything else except for Phsyx should be unchecked. So just install the driver and Phsyx - nothing else needs to be installed.

This is what I do when I install a new driver for my GTX 980 Ti. I use nothing else, just the driver and Phsyx.

you got it wrong ... everything except GFE in the custom install is "driver" ... only GFE is a bloatware ;)

and you can download the latest nvidia driver here on TPU
https://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/2771/nvidia-forceware-372-54-vista-7-8-32-bit

I'd just get the latest driver downloaded.

nanananaahhh no DDU recommendation ... he's already in trouble with only GFE o_O (sidenote: ticking clean install box in driver install always worked for me ... i only had to DDU twice for a IGP and AMD install back in the days )

also driver and PhysX yep ... but only GFE is useless in NV driver package :D (ok 3D vision is not always useful .... but HD audio driver can be sometime ....)

errrrrr the OP has a 9800GT ... does even the latest driver work with that.... (that would also explain why GFE is a P.I.T.A in that case )

Just install the driver, and PhysX. Don't install 3DVision if you are not using it, nor the HDMI audio, nor the GFE. Driver and PhysX... all you need to do is read the selections on the custom install. So long as you don't require a helmet to walk about life, it should be easy to spot. ;)

It's NEVER worked right for me, not a single day of working right. I guess you got lucky.
Sorry to hear that. I think it's more of a case that you got unlucky though. If it was that bad then people wouldn't be using it including me and there would be a lot more forum complaints about it.

because it's a hassle and a useless crap?

well manual update on release (aka checking TPU for new driver and downloading them) is also painless... specially when doing a custom install and unticking GFE case ...

automated update via nvidia or windows is the best way to f*ck up your installation, i prefer to wait and see for a bit if any other user report issues, before updating ... and surely not autoupdating ... i am lazy but not enough for that
I live dangerously on my home system lol and usually just install NVIDIA's latest drivers as soon as they come out. While not completely fuckup free, it's rare enough that I don't have to worry about it and can afford to be lazy about it on my home system. On any kind of work or critical system, doing this would of course be foolish and I wouldn't recommend it. Updates in that scenario should always be tested and waited a few days to help ensure they don't cause problems, like you do.

Now, if you wanna compare full-on laziness and convenience, no way is the very light faffing required to download and install it as handy as doing it through GFE with a couple of mouse clicks. :D GFE is certainly not hassly, useless crap.

well ... 3 simple click on Techpowerup is also an option.

TPU!2.jpg TPU!3.jpg TPU!.jpg

or even 1 click :D

1 click.jpg

Pro: always the latest, Cons: still pack GFE in it ... (oh well it's NV's official ... so well ... yep logical :D )

PS, GFE never gave me any argument to keep it: game optimization? trivial at most if not completely useless and sometime totally f*cked up, Shadowplay? i prefer OBS but i rarely stream (heck even the copycat function from AMD Gaming evolved Raptr was good enough, plus worked on both brand ) LED gestion? errr... gimmick..., Shield tablet game streaming? tested once ... not really something exceptional, Driver updates? errrrrrrrrrr..... it's my main concern ... when i rollback because nvidia did a crap latest driver, which happen a little too much to my liking, that bring more issues than it solve ... I LIKE to stay on my rollback version and not have a freaking popup reminding me that my driver is outdated (i know i can hide the notification ... ) funny ... i had less driver issues moment like that with AMD and i kinda liked AMD Raptr ... (but i love my 1070 .... )

I tried GFE and I'm not sure why anyone would want it short of the recording tools. The game optimization for a majority of my games is laughable.

@Phaewryn, I wouldn't recommend using GFE until Nvidia gets their act together with support and most importantly make their program work properly.

as far as i've seen .... it will be far more worse with the next step in GFE evolution... can't recall properly but ... it involve something with being forced to have an account and some other things along those lines ...

i rather see them correcting driver issues, like the clock stuck syndrome with the 10xx line, than working on GFE

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
I kind of see GFE as training wheels...won't lie.

There are enough stories on the web + my driver upgrade cycle + I don't record = ain't touching that with Qubit's PC aND GreiverBlade pushing. :p

Nah, the height of lazy convenience. :p It's only the update function I'm really interested in and it works well.

nope ... not when it update your driver to a F.U.B.A.R version like there was some recently ... YES 368.39... i am looking at YOU! or any other, like the one that almost made me RMA my brand new 980 a while back,... manual update, after checking forums for issues and bug, is supreme and should be the only option :p (well ... play loto ... because ... i think you are a lucky one, i don't have that luck, nor many other user that tried to find GFE useful )

... no wonder i never wanted windows to be in charge of my driver update ... GFE is no exception albeit being made by NV (the issue is not GFE but the driver in the end ... but GFE contribute to the issue so ... the circle is closed! )

I kind of see GFE as training wheels...won't lie.

well ... green team training wheel ...
f_72fd606c44.jpg

altho GFE is more that kind of training wheel ...

GFE isn't automatically updating, it just reminds you to do so and you can decline it. Like I did for almost 3 months now. So if you update to a "bad driver" it's the same mistake you do when you do it manually, there's no difference. For that Nvidia is to blame generally - releasing bad drivers.
