I surprised HD 6850 could handle the game at 1080p at all. Thing is, I've played all the game I wanted, Fallout 4 for example I've finished 3 times with all 3 endings :p Intel HD 4600 could only run it after heavily tweaked, but only about 20-30fps at 1366x768, with core clocked at 1600MHz and memory at 2000MHz dual channel. Doom 2016 meanwhile refuses to run at all which is rather annoying since I love that game (finished the game too with all collectibles but I love to replay it from time to time). After been using Intel HD, if anyone annoyed by driver issue from AMD or nvidia it's nothing compared to Intel problems

It runs very very smoothly, same for skyrim. Haven´t tried DOOM yet.
But I think my I7-6700 + 3200MHZ CL14 RAM is doing most of the lifting

I know but I'm surprised it actually run at all.

Nah I don't regret selling it. Performance is awesome but so does the heat. 390X is just overclocked 290X with 8GB memory so a big no. If i want to go all out I would rather take custom cooler Fury than it since it's cheaper and runs cooler despite having a massive shader count. Fury Nano still expensive, at Amazon I could buy Fury Nitro for the price of RX480 in my country, and buy Fury X cheaper than Fury Nano locally.

I do thinking going nvidia. They have awesome simple apps to control it's GPU (nvidia Inspector) and very good vBIOS editor makes it a good buy but I haven't found a good price for it yet. I did use GTX 680 before so I know it's performance.

Wait, what? Where do you live? CPU+mobo is also expensive in second hand market at my country especially the i5/i7 and K series CPU. But the mobo price is absurd if it's sold only €1 cheaper than brand new.

My card is pretty quiet actually. Heats not that bad honestly. Too bad though

Gonna throw this out there and say grab a used GTX 670, they are still quite exceptional performers for their age and will run you less than a 7970/7950 whilst running cooler and using less power, surprises mke how they can still chew through most of todays games at high settings, price/perf has to be right up there with these

I can't find a good priced GTX 670. I love to use nvidia card back since I do play PhysX game before, most notably Borderlands 2. Haven't played the game since playing without PhysX makes the game bland.

The only reason I don't like to buy them is because of GTX 970 3.5GB problem. I pre-order the card, an MSI GTX 970 TwinFrozr V Gaming and when I play Wolfenstein: The New Order I noticed something weird where the RAM usage is never maxed, it hovers around 3.3GB -3.5GB while my previous 290 uses almost all of it's 4GB RAM at the same setting. When I crank up the visual details the game starts to stutter, the net later confirms my findings. The rest is history, I sold the card and hated them ever since.

Or GTX 950
It is a good alternative since GTX 750Ti price is very close to 950 anyway.

Exactly what i did.

GTX 670 is still very fast, it beats the 960, when overclocked it matches and beats a stock GTX 770, my 670 clocks to 7ghz on the memory which is 770 speed.

I just went the same route. Sold my GTX 970 so i could buy GTX 1070 when it comes out and bought R9 380 as temporary card for real cheap. Was totally disappointed by it's performance in Arma 3 and generally in buggy drivers so i got myself GTX 670 instead. Then GTX 1070 came out, ridiculously overpriced (for now, at least) so i got another GTX 970 and waiting for prices to settle. I hope it won't happen to you :)

Thanks guys for suggestions. I still thinking of what to buy. There is plenty of good card on 2nd hand market. I found a good offer on reference GTX 680 but I used it before and not really liked the cooler. Also I found a good condition DirectCU II GTX 670. I'll try to contact the seller first whether the card is available or not

Hi
What do you think about hd7950 ? The card still works well in 1080p And better efficiency than the 7970 , and I do not recommend gtx 600 series

After been thinking a bit I bought GTX 950 yesterday. No point buying old GPU that's eat a lot of power and I don't know the abuse previous owner giving to the card. I'm happy with my purchase, but what I'm not happy is I cant install PhysX, it keeps failing even after tons of tweak I read online

PhysX should install with the driver package as an option. Don't pick express install, do a clean one.

Then yu should not recommend the 7000 series either since the 670/ 680 are their direct competitors LMAO.

Exactly, that's why I opt for midrange cards. I quite impressed by my GTX 950, I don't expect much of it since it's the cheapest card I could find, single fan all aluminium heatsink but it cools the card sufficiently. Overclocked it to 1443MHz and 1950MHz memory and I'm a happy camper. Going back to nvidia it just seems faster, granted the detail setting is less than 290X but it less stuttery. Maybe because I'm playing TWIMTBP/GameWorks title (GTA V, Fallout 4, Borderlands 2/Pre Sequel). Doom 2016 meanwhile isn't that good but since the game is optimized it played just fine, isn't as smooth as 290X even with reduced setting.

up till very recently i had EVGA gtx 680 SC 2gb and Sapphire hd 7970 OC boost 3gb and i swapped them several times to test the games i play before i parted with one or the other.

the 680 is 10 - 15 % better fps wise.

i kept the 7970 because of GTAV where the extra memory helps..

in the 2nd hand market in the UK the 7970 is a better buy in my opinion. (7970 is £100 ish-----680 is £ 130 ish)

Sold off my GTX 950, 2GB isn't enough nowadays, framerate is good but sometime jittery and a lot of texture popup when entering new area or moving fast in Doom 2016 and GTA V. I bet 3GB RAM isn't enough too. Planning to go RX 470 at least next. Old cards have too little framebuffer, GTX 6x0 series usually with 2GB VRAM and HD7970/280 with 3GB.

Pop in happens even on a TITAN X.

Sorry but you were advised differently and a 670 or 7970 will both blow that puny little 950 out of the water in every scenario regardless of vram I've been gaming on a 670 2gb for most of this year at high settings on 1080p with no issues, now you're going to blow another $200 on a 470 which you admit is a stop gap.... Your money pal ;)

P. S a 950 is not mid range.

As i said the 670 is a better buy than a 680 or just grab a 7970, the 670 is literally 10-5% behind a stock 680, and overclock like absolute bastards on air. i have gone over 7ghz on my memory now which aids Vram limits, i am faster than GTX 770 on memory right now at 7050mhz, which is over 220 GB/s bandwidth, makes a huge difference vs the core clock on the 600 series. My card is unlocked to 150% power limit but stock cooler can only realistically handle 110% maximum with a lot of noise to cool it and reaching 1250mhz, but untapped power and thermals it will soar passed 1300mhz.

I know 950 is slightly higher than 750Ti but lesson learn. The HD 7970 card is already sold and I can't find good deal on other cards. The reason I opt for new cards is because I have bad purchase with used cards before so I quite worried to buy another.

Nah I sold the card not mainly because of 2GB RAM, it's because I need money for my first child. Since this card is new I could sold roughly the same price as new.

That's a good clock! I've found some GTX 670 but unfortunately all of them are reference cards. I have GTX 760 before that uses reference cooler and it's damn horrible and noisy and can't even maintain boost clock at all, just stuck at base clock most of the time

Yeah i have EVGA SC reference, i unlocked the bios to handle way more than is realistic but i plan to ghetto rig it and do some really odd things with it much like the XEON, i am just waiting for the right time to do it as i have to balance my money right now, only just got into work again. GTX 1080 and new platform planned too in incremental upgrades.

But the 670 reference is loud there is no getting over that but damn the GPU it's self can be pushed VERY far. The GTX 770 is barely keeping taps on my 670 from this video below.

Highly scaleable architecture with a good fan profile and OC settings.

Best buy for you now is probably a rx480 with 4gb, nearly as cheap as 470 but better. If you want a used card, get a gtx960 4gb or r9 380 4gb.

RX 480 is expensive. If your gonna hold on to it for longer, sure.
If your gonna change it in a year ,or so,RX 470 should be golden for now. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01JS2UFDM/?tag=tec06d-20
If you can get the 7970 cheaper than bread, sure. It's so old. Yes it has the power, but from a driver (optimization point of view) it's literally dead. NEVER make this huge mistake! You are not buying a car. With cars it's a bit different. You will get amazing value with older models. This is a computer, you always need the latest chipsets , drivers etc. Sure, one never had money to keep up with the market. You are not gonna change your entire pc every 12 months. But when thinking that you will pay for a 7970 as much for a new card, absolutely no way!
When choosing between raw power or new drivers / chipsets; raw power will lose. The ideal world would be raw power + new. But that's always so expensive. No money for that, go with new, at least.
