RX 480 is expensive. If your gonna hold on to it for longer, sure.
If your gonna change it in a year ,or so,RX 470 should be golden for now. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01JS2UFDM/?tag=tec06d-20
If you can get the 7970 cheaper than bread, sure. It's so old. Yes it has the power, but from a driver (optimization point of view) it's literally dead. NEVER make this huge mistake! You are not buying a car. With cars it's a bit different. You will get amazing value with older models. This is a computer, you always need the latest chipsets , drivers etc. Sure, one never had money to keep up with the market. You are not gonna change your entire pc every 12 months. But when thinking that you will pay for a 7970 as much for a new card, absolutely no way!
When choosing between raw power or new drivers / chipsets; raw power will lose. The ideal world would be raw power + new. But that's always so expensive. No money for that, go with new, at least.
HD 7970 is still GCN as the new RX470, the 470 have newer GCN4 iteration but it is still GCN at heart so driver optimization is still there for older GCN cards.

The RX470 you pointed is very cheap though, a lot cheaper than local shops so I might buy that if I got money.

Sorry but you're talking out of your ass... No offence, a 7970 is close to and beats a 470 in some cases and can be picked up for half the price, it's the same card (more or less) as the 380x so your really bad and uneducated driver speech is way off the mark and just wrong.

As i said the 670 is a better buy than a 680

You screwed up selling that R9 290X a bit. Considering its the base for R9 390X, it would still be a current gen performance graphic card. In all honesty, get a RX480 for the time being. It's cheap, its new and it performs around the same as R9 290X that you had. Only other cheapest option would be second hand R9 290X again. Only that could go for a lot cheaper.
I wouldn't call it "cheap", not even 4GB model. It's nowhere near as cheap as used 7970.

@Apocalypsee : Did you OC your card? You could manually adjust fan speeds if it's not performing as expected or you can add Arctic F12 fans which are cheap, slient and excellent performers.

It is cheap. It's delivering performance of high end cards from last year for like 3rd of the price. I'd know, I've paid 650€ for my GTX 980. Which became devalued entirely over night as GTX 1060 and RX480 got released.

What might be cheap for someone, might be quite expensive for somebody else. Average consumers (the vast majority) usually buy GPU's less than 250€.

AMD/ATI always offered better performance for the specific price level.

How much have you seen 2nd hand 7970s for, because I just saw an ASUS Turbo ref 970 for $200 brand new on a Newegg promo.

The real reason I sell it because of the heat. It's an awesome card but I want a cooler running card. I have modified the vBIOS to achieve lower temperature but still I want something cooler. Buying another one would defeat the purpose
But you will struggle to find that since both amd and nvidia allow high temps any way these days, get a 7970 for now or weva and definitely get an Aib new card later because all new gpus need a big cooler to keep them cool and quite these days, thank the heat density per square millimeter of gpus at 14-16nm for that.

While I waited for my 480 I actually downsized from a 7970 @ 1150/1600 to a 270 @ 1000/1655 and frankly there's only a few games in which I could make out the difference on a 60hz 1200p monitor.

The 7870/270 cards are still pretty good buys since only a handful of AAA games require more power than they can deliver, specially at 1080p 60Hz. The major drawback is the 2GB of RAM although I think there are a few models with 4GB.

The card come pre OC but I custom modified the vBIOS to return back to stock speed and undervolt. The card performs brilliantly no problem there but the heat output is too much. I go that route before by putting a couple of 120mm fans on the card removing the three stock fans but since the heat is dumped into the case it's not very effective.

Locally 2nd hand HD 7970 costs ~USD113 and all GTX 670/680 are priced witin that range

R9 280x/7970 is better because of higher memory amount besides a gtx680/770 with 4gb. I'd go with the first ones. If you want something cool nvidia is the better choice.

If you are looking for an interrim card while you wait got for either a GTX760 (MSI) or R7 370 (MSI) these are good mid-range cards highly overclockable if you use the right software and the prices are now classed as budget....

Hope this helps

On both cards you can get above average FPS for gaming with high settings

Yeah 7970 got more memory than gtx6x0 and only a few models equipped with 4GB, finding those card is a rarity. Memory requirement for new games is mind boggling that is one disadvantages of buying old cards.

Nah not really, if you look at Pascal notebook GPU is basically a desktop GPU, most of AIB put ridiculously big inefficient cooler on thei card that put more bling rather than useful. For example RX460 that were aimed for mobile segment but on desktop AIB put obnoxious large aluminium slab instead of proper heatpipe. If done properly I bet it wont even need dual slot cooling. Same goes with GTX 1060.

The rumour about too much heat density on 14/16nm came up because the "Founder's Edition" (expensive good looking reference crap - edition) cooler was unable to keep the GPU from throttling down. RX 480 is a much better example, with a cheap cooler that consist of only some aluminum and a copper core, it manages the GPU relatively good - and the GPU has the same TDP as a GTX 1070, a smaller fabrication process and on top is even smaller than GP104 - so the heat density is even higher. Another example: the new RX 460 has a absolutely small 14nm GPU and yet it's easily cooled by even the smallest heatsinks.

Don't know what you two experts are saying because its not what I'm seeing I've 2 480s with full cover blocks and plenty of rad and for their tdp they give out some heat but that might just be my experience, also few note that the 480 ref cooler has two separate metal cooling sections ,the ally fin bit just for gpu and the metal fan shroud base which cools ram and Vrm seperately its actually quite a nice design for a gpu you Know will run hot.

What do you expect? I guess you're running it overclocked, that GPU is easily good for up to 225W and more, about 160 is the minimum if you run it on 1266 always. I'd say it's pretty normal behaviour.

I still run a pair of 7950's in a rig, flashed them to R9 280's and overclocked the heck out of them. Still great cards, the pair outperforms my 290 handily to this day.

It's a shame you don't fold then mate nice cards for it.
