GTX 980M runs out of juice before I hit VRAM limit?

Hi, have a P35X V3 laptop and just started to play around with my 2160p monitor to see what my laptop can do with its monster 2nd tier, wait no third tier now that GTX 1070 is out for laptops(GTX 980, non-M version, being the 2nd tier).

Here's a screenshot of GPUZ: http://gpuz.techpowerup.com/16/08/31/sg4.png As you can see running in 2160p resolution, it runs out of juice before I am able to hit its VRAM limit...hahaha The game I was running this is on is called Viking: Battle for Asgard. I've had a similar experience with ORION: Prelude here: http://i1177.photobucket.com/albums...er shortage for 980M_zpsywerfjjo.gif~original That runs out of juice too before I can hit the VRAM limit.

I guess what I want to know is are there any games, modded or not, that can actually make full use of the 980M's 8GB VRAM capacity without dipping below 60fps? Or was the 8GB tag just a gimmick and it was supposedly used for marketing purposes to entice buyers, like me, to get it only to find out the card will only make use of about 1 or 2GB (I've yet to play a game with GPUZ running in the background that uses more than 2GB vRAM off my 980M)before it passes out in exhaustion? hahahaha

What do you mean ran out of juice? If I'm not mistaken, the GPUs will downclock/throttle when temps hits 80c which leads to lower performance so if that's your "out of juice" situation, maybe turn the A/C on and get a laptop cooling pad.

Sorta.

They've been sticking too many ram chips on underpowered gpus for long enough that dinosaurs probably thought their video games would rock only to be dissapointed and thrown into a bad ARK server. That said, VRAM is cheap nowadays relative to the cost of the GPU, so why in the world wouldn't they throw a bunch on there in the off chance it might get used?

Honestly, that card will probably never be able to run a game at a steady 60FPS that uses 8GBs of ram, but here's the thing: Low frame rate scenarios actually benefit more from VRAM, so that ram actually does help make low frame rates a little more high than they could've been.

So yeah, I guess you could say they trick the consumers a bit. But they do it with a side of love.

Fair enough...

Aw, that's not what I wanted to hear...hahahahaha Ok, what about between 30 and 60 fps? Any games?

but here's the thing: Low frame rate scenarios actually benefit more from VRAM, so that ram actually does help make low frame rates a little more high than they could've been.
Really? And how does that work? It's not like they're starving of vRAM as there's plenty of it.....unless the memory speed somehow speeds up when you're lagging? It's not say the inverse of the infamous GTX 970 memory *bug*(that I've read about), so when it lags(say for example below 30 fps), memory speed shoots up, is it....? Hahaha:p

:wtf:Hmmmm........well to be frank, I didn't actually get this solely because it had 8GiB of VRAM, but rather it had the 2nd top highest performing graphics card(at the time, first being the full desktop 980 that's just compressed down for laptops; and the other usual 15.6" sized laptops only held a GTX 970M) for a 15.6" sized laptop and I thought that's pretty neat considering the size and it was just right for me too, 17.3" looked too bulky for me....hahahaha, maybe if I didn't have a tower and wanted full mobility, then I suppose I would have gone 17.3" size; but I do have a tower so no....maybe in future if I have cash to burn....heh. That and it was able to squeeze in a Blu-ray burner I could make use of as well! Unlike other units where they've omitted optical disc drives for whatever reasons, Gigabyte managed to pull this off and right!

But the 8GiB is a nice touch and wanted to now if there are actually any applications or games that will fully use up the whole 8GiB of vRAM....or else what's the point of advertising that much if I can't even use it all, you know...?

I meant it can't suck anymore juice and is at its peak performance and thus out of juice because it can't perform any better than what it's restricted power gives it. If you saw the two screenshots, you'd understand... It's not overheating either, just power limited and can't go any more, well according to those two GPUZ screenshots anyway...

Yes and a lot of ignorance floats about the internet where people mix up Vram and GPU horsepower, you still don't really need more than 2GB Vram at 1080P, if you have the GPU horsepower to run it.

I run Fallout 4 on high with SSAO and Bokeh DOF solid 50-60FPS with Vsync on, i can run ultra too but my FPS goes down because my GPU is not fast enough to give me a steady 50-60FPS it will be 30-50FPS which is very different. Nothing to do with Vram.

The desktop 980 only came with 4GB. That should give you your answer right there. The 8GB was entirely a marketing gimmick, you'll never get playable framerstes with a game that uses anywhere near 8GB.

On the bright side, it's better to have too much vram versus not enough. Enjoy that 980M it's no slouch.

Why are you even trying to use up all 8gb? It's like buying a 32gb ram kit just to use it all for no reason.

It's a enthusiast thing I guess.

Rise of the Tomb Raider uses a lot of vram at it's max. You could try that.
Oh I actually have that game sitting in my steam library - haven't gotten around to playing it yet - I will try this when I can find the time to; thanks!

You could also try GTA V at very high settings.
I don't have GTA V....but if you would kindly donate a copy for me to just test this, I would! :p

That's true, just in case I do somehow make use of it.

Well it's not really for no reason but more of a "Well if you have this much of something, might as well make it useful or else it's just wasted storage space"

If you can overclock the ram. I remember doing it on a M18 ATi Radeon 9800 256- I had custom tweakmonster ddr ramsinks on mine for cooling in a Dell Inspiron 9100/XPS Gen 1

You do some scary froggy stuff with your hardware so you get the pass there. Just don't install ram like a grizzly bear. ;)

Couldn't even finish the benchmark because it crashed because I ran out of system commit and that's only @ 1080p, I tried 2160p just for the hell of it and it also crashed...hahahaha Looks like I need more than 16GB of RAM to play this game with everything maxed out @ 1080p....Can't imagine trying to run this game smoothly @ 2160p resolution....

It got up 4GB vRAM at the menu before I clicked start benchmark option and it dropped....and then crashed...hahaha

Maybe 32GB of RAM might help here.....but I doubt I would be able to play it anyway even if eats enough to not crash, fraps reported a fluctuation of 5 to 20 fps....and 2160p in menu resulted in less than 10 fps...
