Is Ivy Bridge obsolete comapred to Skylake and future?

Seriously a non-overclockable i5 ivy bridge is too obsolete to be used in a gaming rig.

It depends on the game(s), which is why it good to take into account what the OP said, and not your own agenda.

An i3 paired with a decent gpu will play many games just fine. Hell, an i3 paired with a 970 will get you 50 fps at least on high settings.

I believe you need a z77 board if you want to overclock. Intel nerfed this awhile back.

I forgot about that. It can only do bclk and not multiplier... It's the reason I only have Z77 boards.

Yeah, just buy from e-Bay or similar an i7 3770K for example, and you will not need anything else for a couple of more years to come.

That's pretty good price. They still go for $200 or more on ebay. I traded an EVGA GTX 780 SC for an i7 3770K to guy here over a year ago.

No, maybe 5-20% more performance in games that use more than 4 threads/a lot of threads, save the money for new(er) stuff.

You are not looking at the big picture. He could buy the 3770K and sell the 3570K. It's probably a $50 upgrade at most.

Still not really worth it I'd say. Most games zero change. Better save for a 6+ core or new 4 core.

And I have a brother who is gaming perfectly fine on a hexacore Nehalem.

I think games don't care much about CPU in most instances.

I thought I bought an i7 930 for $230 on ebay years ago but it was a W3570 ES and CPU-Z listed it as an i7 965 EE. That is my only 1366 socket chip and I never reported the seller but I did pee in my pants just a little back 2010.

hell no, it's not obsolete - all my systems are based around sandy and ivy bridge and they kick still ass. Overclocked they compete quite well with modern intels, and even at stock they're better for gaming than any AMD on the market today.

Try using programs like throttlestop to overclock in windows, if you cant via BIOS. You should get 400Mhz free, basically turbo on all cores.

i used a Xeon E3-1275v2 and a Q77 mobo for quite a long time (the 1275v2 is technically a 3770 with 3770K baseclock )
altho a 3770K woudln't even need OC to be still up to the task... altho i believe (wait believe is not precise enough) i am sure (and i remember it clearly) that i ran my E3 at full turbo on all core and even did some FSB OC on it without any issues ...

tho i doubt the OP would want to OC (or even need)

yep ... a PhIIX6 1055T or PhIIX4 955 BE are even enough for some games (altho limitating ... [sarcasme] but only "elites" see the difference and think 1-10fps is a gargantuan difference and you obligatory need a i7 for gaming[/sarcasme], whereas sometime Hyperthreading hurt performances instead of helping ) i had a FX-6300 before my i5 4690K and 6600K, the only differences, when used with the same GPU? minimal fps got more stable, although the biggest difference was in online games (but with massive population on screen and not only 6v6 )

I have four rigs, with i7 3960X, 2600K, 4770K and an FX8350, they all handle games just fine. Even had an X6 1100T and it handled the games I threw at it then with aplomb.

It all depends what you want to play a lot of games don't use the CPU like BF4, Witcher 3 etc etc.

Battlefield uses lot's of CPU resources in MP, tested BF1 beta MP and its almost always 100% usage on 64player map spikes lowest at 55-60FPS here and averages at 80-100fps (2133 x 1200 DSR, all ultra) and GPU usage hardly ever gets full. CPU might be limiting it but framerate wise its still very fast so no biggie

ps: i played Witcher 3 on my i3/GTX860m rig ... no issues at all as long as you are willing to do some graphical settings compromise (2.9ghz 2core with HT for reminder )

I "side grade" from 2600K @ 4.5-5Ghz to i5-6500 @ 4.8Ghz. I see major improvement in Totalwar (Shogun 2 / Attila) and Cities Skylines 81 tiles mod with huge population and GTA V with extended distance scaling enabled (AKA. CPU killer).

GTX 670 is not fast enough for CPU to become bottleneck. Even FX-6300 will do the job with that card.
Try something with GTX 980 Ti or 1070 or more.

You want a CPU limited game? GTA IV.
