So few months ago i bought a Samsung curved monitor which is in my system specs, loved it and never attempted to clean the monitor apart from using microfibre cloth to give it a wipe.
Cut to this month my mum thought be good idea to use vacuum cleaner to vacuum my desk and in process accidently scratched my monitor not once but twice, the scratch marks are easily noticeable as you can see from the photo. Excuse the flash. Some of you may say i should just leave it and live with it but it is really bugging me to point i can't stop staring at it and noticing it.

Anyways..im thinking of getting a new monitor closer to end of November or for Christmas, now it might be too early to make decision since there may be newer releases.

Now i want to upgrade to a monitor with higher refresh rate just to see what the fuss is about, but i'm not sure whether to get another 1080p monitor or upgrade to 1440p. The monitor and PC itself will mainly be used for gaming on PS4 and PC,on PC side i'll more than likely be sticking with GTX970 and possibly be looking at upgrading to next *70 card be it 1070 or next release in future. The monitors i've mainly been looking at are:

Would like some opinions and options. :)

If you stick to your GTX970, go 1080p, even when you upgrade to a GTX1070, a 1080p 144Hz is more than enough.
If you buy a 1440p 144Hz monitor you'll want a GTX1080 , GTX1080Ti or better to get a very high fps.

In my opinion I would go for a 1440p freesync 144hz monitor and when you upgrade the GPU go for the next gen of AMD graphics cards, you'll be better of this way.

I'm on 1080p 144Hz and I think I'd pick it again. If you want your graphic cards last longer at higher details, go with 1080p. For jaggies due to smaller pixel density, just use SweetFX SMAA. It's essentially free and smooths 95% of jaggies.

With 1440p, you'll tax GPU quite some more. People tend to do this mistake quite often. Buy huge ass monitor with 4K and then they are all disappointed because they want to run it on GTX 960... As for FreeSync or G-Sync, if you have NVIDIA graphic card you have Fast and Adaptive V-Sync modes which essentially eliminate the need for hardware sync features. Too bad AMD doesn't have either, just framerate limiter. But it doesn't go to 144fps so it's useless for me.

Yeah i'm thinking of leaning towards sticking 1080p as i still would like to run games on high details, but what monitor would be best out of the options ive listed? Or are there better ones out there around same price range or less?

@kurosagi01 I've got the BenQ XL2720Z and it's fantastic. Special features include BenQ strobing which works with any card and any refresh rate, motion blur reduction. It's also got user profiles and a separate control panel that connects to it via USB. Picture quality is pretty good too, especially for TN.

There's an XL2730 if you want 1440p.

Oh and get your mum to pay for it. ;)

Never thought about checking out BenQ even though i knew they have been releasing high quality monitors for few years now, reasonable price aswell and Lol i wish i could ask my mum to pay for it but my parents already bought me 2-3 monitors beforehand so that is a no go. Going to be looking at selling my current one or give it away to someone when i do decide to buy replacement.

I would say that a quality panel is more important than a higher resolution. A good ips or va panel will show a more noticable difference.

How deep are these scratches?

I've been successful taking scratches out of CDs, DVDs, watch crystals, and other items by putting a small dab of plain, white toothpaste on my thumb and slowly rubbing the scratch out. You might try this in a small spot in the corner of your monitor first to make sure it does not make it worse.

Curious - did she hit/scratch the monitor twice, or in two places with one swoop?

I would agree with you on that part on a better panel but for the budget i'm looking at spending and resolution, it is either the Acer Predator which is a VA Panel since its a curved monitor with G-sync or the Asus or BenQ which both are TN panel but significantly cheaper and both have 1ms response time.

The scratches do show up with the monitor powered on,can see the lining coming through slightly discoloured when exposed to white or black colour.
She probably hit it in 2 places in one swoop most likely,i wouldn't know 100% as i was at work and when i confronted her she thought it was alright because she thought i had a screen protector on or something when the only plastic wrapping i left on is the bezel.

First of all. Don't go fiddling around with that monitor to fix anything - call your insurance company (household contents insurance) and figure out if you can get it covered! Get a price for a repair on your current monitor and see if you can claim the damage.

Step two: use the repair money and buy monitor you want. I would suggest 1440p/144hz if affordable, to future proof your stuff, just avoid TN at any cost and skip 1440p if you have to if it means you can get a solid IPS or VA. Monitors tend to last longer than this current one ^^ Or alternatively, actually have it repaired.

The reason why I was curious has no relevance here. It just reminded me of back in the day when I used to maintain radio systems in Air Force Security Police cars. We had a co-worker mounting a new radio in the trunk of a brand new police car and he drilled not one, but two mounting holes through the trunk floor. That was fine, but instead of stopping there he keep on drilling right through the top of the gas tank under the trunk floor! Why the shop didn't blow up then, I don't know.

It wasn't until the next day when the cops filled up the tank and they started smelling a bunch of gas that they took the car vehicle maintenance and figured out what happen. They had to replace the tank and the fuel filter. For sure, we never let him forget his mistake! :D

Worth a try but note most home insurance policies have at least a $500 deductible.

Not in my country, here if you have 100 eur own risk on the policy its alot already. It can really be a huge difference per company, per country, and per policy.

Trying to fix the monitor was never on my agenda as i know i'll probably F it up like i did to my old iphone 3GS which i ripped out the in-ear piece ribbon from the motherboard lol.
Well i think i've decided to stick with 1080p since i won't be coughing up money on beyond 70 series anytime soon or in distinct future,i've not done a good amount of research on monitor options available but at the moment the benchmark price is the Acer predator.

Ha no worries. :)

I don't think my parents would allow me to use our home insurance on a "low" monitor, they have no care at all for any of my electronics which is proven by the scratches and the idea of "vacuuming" a desk filled with stuff is a fantastic idea. On top of that they probably don't want me to pay the excess or whatever either which will increase the premium. So my only option is just to buy out of my own pocket and then try sell my existing monitor.

It's not a country thing - it is a policy thing. Just as it is with car and medical insurance (at least where there's no national health). There are different plans, some with higher monthly premiums but lower deductibles. Some with lower monthly premiums but higher deductibles.

No, whatever refresh you set the video card it will strobe at without any problems. Note that I haven't been able to make it work at 50Hz however, for the full-on migraine effect, lol - blank picture. It does a quite effective migrainer at 60Hz though, but motion is very smooth and clear. Note that by default the strobe flashes twice with a 60Hz signal, to remove the flicker. However, this has the effect of producing a judder/double image, so I disabled it by using the hidden menu.

There were some issues with the firmware early on when this model was released that affected strobing, but all that was fixed with an update. I bought mine quite late on so there had been several updates released by then and it works very smoothly. The gory details are at www.blurbusters.com if you'd like to have a look. It's a damned good website anyway if you're interested in high performance gaming monitors, especially ones with strobing backlights.

Based on your card and what you plan on buying next, I would get a 1440p G-Sync 144hz monitor. G-Sync may cost a bit extra, but its worth it in the long run (Along with Freesync for AMD) because it really does keep the games a lot smoother even when the card starts to have issues keeping up with games.

On your site, why not try one like this:
https://www.scan.co.uk/products/27-...tn-2560x1440-1ms-1000-1-black-dp-12-hdmi-1-4x

Its on the cheaper side of the 144hz 1440p monitors and I have heard decent things about the Dell monitors. If your willing to spend more I would go for the Asus ROG or Acer Predator. This is just my opinion on the matter.

Never heard of this brand before but from quick search they're made from refurbished products.

If the scratches aren't deep > "The first method for removing scratches from a flat screen LCD TV is with isopropyl rubbing alcohol. Begin by cleaning the entire screen with the diluted alcohol mixture. Next, dampen a clean microfiber cloth with the solution and gently rub the scratch in a circular motion."
A quick Google shows basically the same instruction in various form.

Isopropyl attacks certain plastics and will ruin the screen if it's made of one of those plastics.

Unfortunately there's no hidden area to test this on, so don't do it unless you're willing to potentially trash the monitor.

I still strongly suggest avoiding a tn pannel.

Why are you people telling him to stay away from TN-Film? He currently owns a curved monitor, he's obviously not into high-end stuff (or accuracy for that matter).

My 2 cents: go to tftcentral.co.uk, look at their reviews and see what fits the bill. The 970 won't handle 1440p very well and interpolation is a bad idea.

Although i would agree to an extent im not all into high-end stuff, nor do i understand the whole technical aspects as i generally see it from a general consumer standpoint of understanding when it comes to monitors. I know i am looking for higher refresh rate solely for the purpose to see the difference in running games when exceeding 60fps in-games. As for understanding the difference in panels i have actually used TN,IPS and now VA and i can tell the slight difference in lighting and colour reproduction etc but at the bottomline to me as long it looks good and the colour is not overly saturated like the old Samsung TV my brother uses then i am pretty happy.
Im a mobile app developer,so accuracy isn't a big deal in my line of work in the office,my home PC setup is for games, social media and watching anime,TV shows and movies.
