"Unless you browse SuperMicro's website for fun... yeah, nobody does that".
I do... just the other day I came across the
X10SDV-7TP8F, a loaded Xeon-D 1587 motherboard. The CPU wasn't a total surprise, it's specs have been known about for some time, but it's still not on ARK so a very recent release.
So I take it the only reason to do this (other than because you can) is because you can afford 40k but can't afford the server farm?
I like these videos but honestly can never understand the real world application.
The reason of this video is to show off. I don't mean that negatively as this is what Puget Systems does. In the past there have been submerged oil cooled computers and other show pieces built to promote the company. They'll also sell a few along the way too. Think back to the $10K QuadSLI Dell computer which sold out it's limited edition quantity in very short time. I have no doubt that there are some people ready to one-up their friends, even at the cost of $40K.
There also exists a reality where you can find these systems being used as intended. Price to performance drops faster than hate on Twitter if you are using it for anything other than these intended niche situations. This is why it's not a step before a server farm. The step before is a farm smaller than the one you are thinking of right now
For example, I'm not going to run a company on a single 4P server, I'm going to have 2 or 3 2P servers with enough budget leftover for the switches, cabling, rack, UPS, and many workstations.
