I still think NFS:Hotpursuit 2 and NFS: Porsche Unleashed were the best titles. Best gameplay. Most innovative at time of release.

NFS is getting tired. They should do a 2008 update of NFS: Porsche. That would be very nice.

They were pretty innovative, but I still think that NFSU and NFSU2 were the best.
They lost the police chases that NFSHP had, but gained the modifications, and adopted the street racing style, which not only people wanted, but that wasn't really popularised much in games... unless I'm getting my timeline wrong, and NFSU was a copy of another street racing style game.

IMO NFSU was the best NFS game. I love the drifting, and it was soo innovative, good stuff. I love the Nissan Skyline, which they took out of NFSU2 and Most Wanted, but then came back in Carbon. Carbon was okay. But still NFSU FTW!

Have you ever seen a Skyline in person? Those engines have mad power with twin turbo's and proper tweaking. Last summer down at the dragstrip I watched a guy pull up in a skyline sleeper, whip out a laptop and reprogram the ecu, then toast a blown camero that was running 11's all day. After the races were done he wipped out that laptop again and it was a normal streetcar..

In my world, yes it is. lol

EDIT: Oh, and the R34 is heavier than R32s and 33s, but has a far superior drivetrain.

The R33 was my favourite, in that special Midnight Purple paintjob.
Frankly though, I'd still rather get a cheap R32, and use the change to get it into the old Aussie Touring Car spec that is ran in. I have something with old cars and wanting to restore them, but I don't know why.
Heck, I haven't even gotten behind the 'wheel yet.

Oh, and I always thought the R33 and R34 were similar weight, with differences being a better engine, powertrain and differential (like Wile E mentioned). And of course, four wheel steering (unless the R33 had that too and I can't remember)

All of them had 4wheel steering. It's called Super HICAS. The R32's wasn't nearly as advanced as the other 2, however. And the 33 and 34 are pretty close in weight, but the 34 is a little bit heavier. (I'm a Nissan nut, can you tell? lol) But we should probably stop thread jacking now.

What? YOU like Nissans? I'd NEVER have guessed it!
Ah, so 4-wheel steer was standard, and there I was thinking that the R34 had it exclusively.
I guessed the R32 wasn't as advanced, designed and started building in the late 80s, so the tech has of course advanced a lot since then.
All of the uprated parts in the R34, and all of the added extras, like the in-dash G viewer (still love that feature, encourages wild driving, it's like a High Score list ) were to blame.
Still, at least the uprated parts helped it move faster/better.

EDIT: Whoops, didn't notice you said to stop thread jacking *lowers ears*

I really hope they bring a damage system back, hopefully real time. Heck, if carmageddon could have real time damage in DOS mode, why the hell don't we have it now!? Personally, I want them to bring back game modes like were in NFS: High stakes. The game had a damage system, but not nearly the modding that's featured in todays NFS games. You could also choose to be a pursuit vehicle, and fishtail racers, or lay down spike strips...lots of fun!

That along with some lesser things, would make NFS great imo... especially because, like Benpi said, he's out of the F&F phase, and I think most people are too, so I think something hardcore would really do the NFS series some good, possibly attracting a newer audience.

I'm still in the F&F phase! :D
