I'm not sure why Musk is making this "announcement" now, unless he just likes attention. For over a year now we've known his plans to send people on a one-way trip, never to return, and constantly dropping off more humans. Hell, he held a worldwide "job search"/auction last year to select people from all different occupations so they could contribute.

So assisted suicide here is not allowed, but Elon Musk has found away around this insurmountable problem by sending suicide squads to mars!!!

What a complete and total crock of shit. There are so many issues with his tissue paper plan that I wouldn't trust it to hold a bit of snot, let alone take anyone to mars successfully.

Every time I see BS about moon or Mars colonization, I have to wonder, why. I get the exploration and scientific advancement part. But other than that, why? What do we gain? Epeen? Our earth is dying or going to die* someday, millions of years from now.... so lets travel to a planet that is inhospitable, that cannot hold an atmosphere, that has little water, that requires so many resources from earth to even get started and will never be viable at self sustaining a colony..... for reasons. Hey we can create a nightmare of people dying on Mars, when the problems arise and there is no help, no safe haven of community or another part of Mars that offers resources we will get to see the animals that humans are as they turn on each other and are driven crazy by the reality of the situation.

* In a few years, like millions or a billion, the sun will die and so will the earth and Mars..... so going to Mars makes no sense.

Musk trades in carbon credits and has found a way to make money on them, by milking government funds for renewable.... um... energy transfer. http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-hy-musk-subsidies-20150531-story.html

Humans by nature are explorers. If we weren't we would have died off a long time ago.

Now I know this is a stretch, but I'm sure many of our ancestors would have thought the same thing about tribes migrating to Europe and even across vast, unending oceans.

Space to us, are the oceans of our past.

all movies shows entire civilizations trying to conquer other realms... super armies and cooperative working for other empires in the space... and we the humans, always trying to grow moar and moar money, with a closed progress for all mankind in the same planet, burning resources and abusing the place that we have for life... great!

We move on as nomads in search for more fertile lands, in search of more room to grow. Sure I understand these reasons, vast unending oceans.... nah, they knew they all abutted land mass, just like they knew the earth was round and likely told idiots the earth was flat and you could sail off it to keep the weak and stupid at home and out of their fishing and trading areas. Wherever people went they encountered other people, and different resources, goods, and ideas, which furthered humanities total advancement. Sure, knowing about Mars will tell us things, but we can send probes, or a few scientists with the ability to return or accept their fate there. But other than learning about the history of Mars, we already know some fundamental facts, like it can't hold a atmosphere, the dirt is incapable of growing any food for humans without a lot of chemistry http://www.space.com/21554-mars-toxic-perchlorate-chemicals.html, there are no chemicals on Mars that we don't have here on earth, Mars doesn't have enough known resources to make energy sustainable without RTG or Solar, meaning that short of sending a nuclear power plant or a shit ton of solar cells.... it will be like living in the stone age, but you can't go outside, your air will run out or your water, or your food. So its essentially picking a way to die, lack of air, water, or food.
