I don't think it has anything to do with a manufacturer intentionally breaking functionality of a device.

Not out of the realms of possibility that in fixing one bug they introduced another? I've seen such things all to often in other companies. I wonder how deeply they integration test such things as third party equipment when releasing updates?

It's you who is playing a smartass now. I clearly stated I DID find an older firmware and I DID flash it, which you would know if you bothered to read the thread.

The original toners are expensive as shit. A set of the 3 colour ones easily cost more than the printer itself, which is ridiculous. Third party ones cost maybe third of that if not less. And they work perfectly fine.

Also, while I generally agree with the "if it works, don't fix it" approach, I don't think it has anything to do with a manufacturer intentionally breaking functionality of a device. Generally I see no reason not to update firmware when there are bugfixes in every release. You never know when it might affect you.

My old printer used VERY EXPENSIVE print cartridges. Tried to use compatible ones but it screwed with the colors (ie: black and white cat being blue ...) so i was forced to use originals and they cost over 100€ and had vey little ink each (8 - 13 ml).

Switched printers, which cost allot more, but it will pay off later since the ink comes in small canisters, has allot more ink per canister (70 ml) and i'll be forced to swap it (if not used) in 2 years from date of purchase (of the ink) because it has date limtations but, since it cost slightly over half what my previous printer's cartridges did and lasts ... about 1 year and 8 months longer, it's soooooo worth it, IMO.

Regardless of the fact he updated his firmware because he was bored (and heck, enthusiasts do this too guys, I do it sometimes I just accept the consequences), this is a real scummy move on HP's part that can only be commercially motivated. It does not help the consumers at all.

It's essentially the same thing with BIOS updates, but we all do it, right? So why would it suddenly be a bad thing with a printer?

Still using my 20 year old Brother laser printer that doesn't care what I install into it. I know, that makes printer companies cry. Same printer for 20 years and 3rd party supplies. Even the paper and electricity I use isn't Brother-branded, oh the humanity.

I have no real reason (except cost of cartridges) to dislike their office Laser Jets.
Seems that they simply do work.

I try not to use included software for printers and instead try to use Windows native printer software to use them. I have an old Brothers all-in-one printer. I bought a 10-pack black ink off ebay for 10 bucks and been using it for 2 years now. Got no complains and I never touch firmware on printers.

Have you ever replaced the toner reset chips? Might be worth a look...The next time I do a refill I planned on replacing mine. Yours could be expired.

HP broke the HP LaserJet 1012 that I have when they refused to release a driver for it for Win-7. I had six toner cartridges for it at the time.

This is an extremely fast and economical printer that uses very little toner. It was great, and they refused to support it in Win-7 or later.
I found a workaround for it. I just install a driver for another Laserjet and it works.

Sounds like HP is attempting an end run around the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.. Since they can't void your warranty for using 3rd party toner, they're simply making it so you can't use it at all. I think there's a little bit of Sherman Antitrust Act in there too.. I smell a lawsuit....

What part of the law would it be violating? I really don't know. You saying they should have disclosed you can only use HP toners when you bought it?

It's not violating Magnuson in and of itself, because Magnuson forbids them from requiring a consumer to purchase any specific brand of supplies as a condition of warranty. It just seems that HP is trying to get around that by locking out 3rd party supplies completely and requiring you to use their supplies.

It also seems to go against Sherman, which bars any company from engaging in anticompetitive business practices.
