Low performance on GTX1070

Hello everyone,

I am using a GTX 1070 FE edition as a GPU but I get the feeling that it is not performing as it should be.

When playing games as GTA V and Total War Warhammer I 'only' get about 80-90 fps when playing on Medium settings. I have tried overclocking my GPU and although it helps it is still not reaching my expectations. I am aiming for 144 fps on Medium or better, since I am using a 144 Hz monitor.

I have checked my temps and they never go above 50 ° C, I even have a custom cooler so I do not think temps are the problem.

I am also using the latest drivers.

My specs are:
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600K CPU
16 GB RAM

I am overclocking my CPU to 4,3 GHz, but even when disabling the overclock on my CPU I still have the 'low' frames.

Am I simply expecting too much from a GTX 1070?

If you need any more information please let me know, any help is appreciated because I have been trying to solve this issue for quite some time now
.

So last night I ran a memtest to check my memory, the test reported that all was OK.
I have also used memtest to test my CPU and the results told me there were no errors.

I have disabled GEFORCE EXPERIENCE SHARING in the Geforce Experience menu but this gave me no extra frames.

Below you can find some images of my MSI Afterburner history while playing Heroes of the Storm, together with an image of CPU-Z and a HEAVEN benchmark score.

In the bios I saw something about my memory being clocked at 1300.
Is this a normal value?

Am I simply expecting too much?

Thank you!

well your afterburner images show cpu4 at 100% and gpu at 35%.

not sure how well hots multithreads but if its anything like wow it's not very good at it. at the very least you know its not the 1070 holding fps down in that game.

easy test. bump the level up detail up and if your FPS stays near the same then you know its not the video card.

1333 MHz is the default speed for ddr3. depending on what ram you have in the system that may be correct.

Your GPU usage is ver low (under 50%) in the Afterburner screenshots. Since you're play HoTS there it's not that surprising since it seems (also from the Afterburner screenshots) that it's near max on 1 core which would make the game simply not optimized for a lot of cores.

You should give us Afterburner screenshots when you play GTA5 and Total War.

Yeah I noticed your system RAM is around 1373Mhz which is low, what speed ram do you have? You might need to set it manually in the BIOS if you have 1600Mhz RAM or higher.

I've increased the Graphics settings and I only noticed a slight difference in loss of FPS.

According to Speccy I am using the following memory:

again. cpu8 100%, gpu ~70%

which immediately tells you its not the GPU holding you back

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
Overclock the cpu even more. ;). Both games are heavy in the cpu.

Are you gaining fps as you overclock?

Yes, the FPS increases while overclocking. However I feel that 4,3 Ghz is about the most I can get out of my CPU.
Do you think the FPS increase is going to be quite a bit when upgrading to a I7 6700K Skylake?

the plateau for gpu1 usage is looks like when you're gpu is the limiting factor
6700k @ 4.6
gtx 1080 @1080p
everything set on ultra. in total war wahammer dx12 mode

So that basically means that if I want to increase my frames I will have to upgrade my CPU, right?

Or keep overclocking what you have...

If 4.3 is the limitation, you have the worst 2600k ever.... or something else is limiting it.

As I said already... fill out your system specs so we know what motherboard, cooling, and ram you have and maybe we can help. ;)

I cant say about GTA. but totalwar isn't threaded very well ( even in dx12 mode) neither is hots.

dropping my quality down to medium in total war I'm still in the 80-90fps range with my 6700k @4.6

So that basically means that if I want to increase my frames I will have to upgrade my CPU, right?

not really. upgrading the cpu wont get you to 144fps with totalwar.

Can I ask why it's remotely important on non FPS games like you mentioned to be so close to your refresh rate?

What monitor do you have?

For the third time, lol, SYSTEM SPECS PLEASE!!!!

For some reason I can't edit and add the URL to my speccy screenshot in my main post. I've attached a screenshot with my Speccy summary. If there is anything else you need to see, please let me know. I'm pretty much a HW noob ^^.
I am using a BENQ XL2411 monitor. The reason I tend to get my frames matching close to 144 Hz is because I am used to the smoothness. They say once you go 144 Hz you can't go back, right :).

The cooler I am using is the following: https://www.alternate.be/Cooler-Master/Hyper-TX3-EVO-CPU-koeler/html/product/915236

The reason I said that I think 4.3 Ghz is the max OC I can use on my CPU is because a friend told me that. He basically helped me overclocking my CPU because I am a total noob. I will read some more on CPU overclocking and try to find out my max OC for my CPU.

Enable PLL Override voltage (option in bios), keep that cpu under 1.4V and temps under 85C while stress testing then push on up!

http://www.overclockers.com/forums/...Beginners-How-to-set-your-25-6-700K-to-4-5Ghz

I meant to add it to your profile bere like everyone else so it's easy to reference. ;)

I've been trying to OC (4.5 Ghz) using the guide you mentioned but I keep getting blue screens (WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR) so I think it's a bit too much for my CPU.

What voltage are you at?? Did you try to go a bit higher? Is PLL Override voltage enabled?

I did some testing this afternoon and I could not get more than 4,4 Ghz. I am using 1.39 V and PLL Override is enabled.

Don't even bother with multithreading in this game, Total War Warhammer CPU scaling past 4 cores is not stelar:
untitled-4.png
and HT doesn't help much:
untitled-3.png
heavily dependent on single thread performance:

Therefore best bet is to OC the CPU and run the game at 1080p:

Keep it at 4.4 GHz don't over-volt past 1.4 V ... as I see temps at load are at low 60-ies, keep them there

I used to fold with three 2600k's when they came out. Two of them required 1.44 to get to 4.6 and the other one only needed 1.4.

I can confirm that my CPU is the bottleneck for Total War Warhammer.
Running the game on Ultra give me a stable 50 fps, changing the settings the Low still gave me those 50 fps. So it has to be my CPU.

After doing some research it seems that upgrading my i7 will not increase my FPS by a lot. So I will probably have to spend some more time into overclocking.
