When I was that age it was GI Joe and Erector Sets. You have to be smart to be a kid these days.

That said, I DID get bored sometimes and tear apart and rebuild my Stingray hubs and crankset via trial and error, as well as true my rims, which was a constant thing with the old cheap steel ones.

I had a terrible day yesterday. It was going great leading up to Sunday Night Football between my Seattle Seahawks and the Arizona Cardinals. Had my homemade chili just before kickoff. Then my Hawks had me on pins and needles for 3 and a half hours. They were behind 0-3 most of the game in a smash mouth defensive battle. Then just when they manage to march down to the 10 yard line and set up an easy game winning field goal in over time, our usually clutch kicker misses.

Very strange game that ended in a 6-6 tie. It's as if it was the devil's handywork. Lots of fluke things happened, including our Bobby Wagner leaping over the linemen to block a field goal, our Tanner McEvoy blocking a punt, and their kicker blowing a chip shot field goal like ours did. It was one of those games where everyone just walked away in disbelief at the end. The only good thing was our defense played an incredible game, especially considering they were literally on the field twice as long as the Card's D.

I'm still wondering if you were just pulling that poor girl's leg and intentionally set to PSU switch to off before she built it.

I had intentionally turned the PSU off.........and forgotten to turn it back on.

I realised as soon as it didnt switch back on with the first press. Poor little thing, she probably was a bit scared but shes known me since she was born so it was all good fun....:)

@qubit
I bought the cpu a year ago and had the build done by last Xmas. Plenty of time to get W10 on it.

If any game ever deserved to end in a tie, it was that one. I was laughing so hard when the second game winning field goal was missed. And yes, that was an awesome stand by the Seahawk defense.

You are a great person BILF!
Just noticed you got more thanks than posts, that speaks miles!
(I am also one of the older that build PCs for kids to play Minecraft (last xmas was not possible but I managed it for his 10th birthday). But teaching to build it themselves is for sure a top of the tops idea!

Congrats to Crutchlow, shows how there's hope even for the 2nd grade bikes (in the right hands) :)

Under my instruction an 8 year old girl built a PC.

Pete has been a mate of mine since we were 11, we were in senior school together and have been the best of pals since.

Last Xmas his youngest daughter really wanted a PC so she could play Minecraft and start to do a bit of youtubeing, skype and stuff. So, they came to me for advice.

my idea was that if the girl built the pc she could have it.... if it just sparked a bit of interest it would be great and a fantastic confidence boost.

She is a very bright child....her mother is a Headteacher (and the kids dont follow their Dad thats for sure. ) Shes a sensible kid and knows how dangerous electricity can be.

Anyway.

Last Xmas came and went and we werent able to coordinate a visit to build the computer so the little girl ended up with a massive tub of Nutella as a pressie rather than a PC.

Cut to yesterday.

A phone call from Pete.

"Ger we are on the way to build the PC, I'll bring cakes have you got coffee.?"

Its a 2.5 hour drive from their house to here so in that time i took the PC apart ready for her to put back together . I had built it ready months previously, installed her game and all the necessary safety software so i knew it was all working correctly.

When they arrived i had all the constituent parts laid out on a table and as soon as she walked in i gave her a screwdriver. When i showed her everything her eyes lit up.....she was amazed and obviously understood most of what i was talking about.......she was asking questions..:peace:

We spoke about the motherboard and how it connect to the case. What the different parts of the motherboard do and how they receive electricity. How the different components speak to each other and what they do. Then she went on to build the PC....she placed every screw...every cable and connector and even with my tutorial it was done in 1.5 hours.

Then came the nerve wracking bit......turning it on.

I was desperate for it to work, honestly, really desperate because the MotoGP race was starting and i wanted them to bugger off so i could watch it in peace.

Sooooooooooo.

Sweet little 8 year old girl presses the switch and

Nothing.

I, with an exaggerated look of horror said to her " oh no....youve broken it"

Then I flipped the switch on the PSU for her and BINGO (of course....:)..) it worked. She is absolutely delighted, as is her Dad and i think her Mum will be happy too. She logged in to Minecraft and "tested" her new machine.

I forgot to tell her i did this with it......:D

http://hwbot.org/submission/3112327_capslockstuck_cinebench___r15_phenom_ii_x2_550_198_cb/

I didnt overclock it for her build but i matched it with a Radeon HD 6970 and 4 gb ram, 500gb hdd.

i have built pcs with my own kids when they were little, they have grown up surrounded with them so it was a real treat for me to see such joy and excitement from the little girl but not only that.......she was obviously interested in what we were doing.

When they left i watched the bike racing.... Cal Crutchlow (GB) was first ........... brilliant.:clap::clap:

Just wanted to share, thats all......:)

p.s

Pete bought a load of copper off me so now i have 40 quid for a new cooler....:D

That's really cool, I would love to do something like that with my daughter unfortunately my financial situation does not permit it :(

To the future generation of PC enthusiasts :toast:
