I don;t care what anyone here says your mods cannot fix the shitty Skyrim shadows. Guess what does fix shitty shadows? Skyrim SE. Since shadows are everywhere being able to push the draw distance AND keep quality high = amazing. Ill wait for mods to be ported because they WILL be ported its not an IF its a WHEN. At which point the game will be far nicer than before. Also not that hard to wait with Fo4 content to go through / BF1 etc.

Many have had too much work put into them, whether it's NPC's with close approximations of personality, houses that have reached their fruition now that updates have finished, huge quests and story additions that are complete and need no updating, new lands, buildings, towns, etc.

No, you are mistaken, the majority of the 255 Mods I run will NOT be ported because the mods are complete and the authors have moved on or retired.

And no one said anything about shitty shadow fixing. Why so many people only think graphics when mods are mentioned, idk. :shadedshu:

Benchmark Scores bench...mark? i do leave mark on bench sometime, to remember which one is the most comfortable. :o
They could've at least fixed bugs of original Skyrim ... on launch day, there is already Unofficial Patch on Nexus which is essentially old unofficial patch being adapted for special edition :shadedshu:
nah ... they were busy fixing shadows ... (chasing shadows? )

yep not a IF but a WHEN, for mods ... on that i totally agree :D

Many have had too much work put into them, whether it's NPC's with close approximations of personality, houses that have reached their fruition now that updates have finished, huge quests and story additions that are complete and need no updating, new lands, buildings, towns, etc.

that also ... although i am happy that the author of one of my favorite follower did port his work on SSE ( 2 Miquo'te follower for the laugh )

now i will be waiting on Onean and Neisa ... and oh ... ENB are also ported for SSE

Thing is not all mods need to be truly ported, many should drag and drop and work if they are standard replacers and things like SMIM should in theory work etc. Ill wait because even if the original author doesnt port the mod someone else usually will. This is generally true when mod others give permission to someone else to include their work etc. As such its just a matter of time.

Oh the QQ here... About something that most of you (I would assume majority Skyrim players have all DLC's) got for free.
What exactly mods got to do with upgraded base game? The same mods that can now be improved even further due to the improved engine?
Gah... It's not like modders won't move to the SE. Because we know they will.

Gah... It's not like modders won't move to the SE. Because we know they will.

Go peruse the Nexus. Most of the several hundred best mods are completely finished and the mod authors moved on, many even "retiring" from modding. And that was fine, since no more updates are coming to Skyrim.

So, new moders, not yet burned out from years of modding Skyrim will move to SSE, but many of the old mods many people will consider essential will not be ported.

One thing I'm glad that they seem to have fixed is the issues with the normal cursor appearing when you alt-tab out of the game

Well, for those qq about old mods not being updated due to modders moving on, at least you still have original Skyrim.

exactly the best point out in that thread, and exactly why i will stay on the original until i can mod the SSE to my taste, as said ... matter of time, meanwhile superior original is still superior for now

I'll probably have both running, once I get the original working again after modding it further and breaking it.

Umm, I just re-downloaded the game. How do I know if I have the special edition or the original installed?

I read here that some of you opted out of the remaster, so I guess I have to do something to install the remaster? I can't find anything on Steam and I've only got one Skyrim exe

I doubt that it has replaced your old version with the new, as it is a separate item on the list

iirc: SSE was for those who owned the game + all DLC or the Legendary ed. (now i wonder if needing it to be installed prior to SSE release was also a requirement)

both separate, they've mentioned it that SSE would not replace TESV

I doubt that it has replaced your old version with the new, as it is a separate item on the list
Duh I have only one Skyrim in my games list, but when I go to the Store it says that I have both the original and the special edition in my library...
Guess I'll just have to play it to see which one I really have?

Are you on the Insstalled Games list? There are two lists. In your library go to games, and you have a choice of all or installed.

I'm in the ''all'' games list. (I've got only 2 installed games, Skyrim and Fallout 4.)

Ooops nvm... found it :)

Bethesda Says It's Going To Fix Skyrim: Special Edition's Audio Problems

"If you’ve been playing Skyrim: Special Edition on PC or Xbox One, you might have been a little surprised by what you heard in the game.

According to a Reddit user by the name of LasurArkinshade, that’s because the audio files for these new versions of the game use a compressed format that makes them sound even worse than the original Skyrim, released almost five years ago.

LasurArkinshade wrote,"

I launched the Special Edition last night and began playing, but something about the audio seemed... off to me. I couldn’t tell whether or not it was a placebo effect since I was going out of my way to analyse everything that could possibly have changed in the SE, but I couldn’t help but notice that the audio seemed... muddier. Less crisp.
"A comparison of the extracted files from both versions of the game revealed the following,"

The vanilla game has sound assets (other than music and voiceover) in uncompressed .wav format. The Special Edition has the sound assets all in (very aggressively compressed) .xwm format, which is a compressed sound format designed for games. This isn’t so bad, necessarily - it’s possible to compress audio to .xwm without significant quality degradation unless you crank the compression way up to insane levels.”

"In response, a user under the name gstaff, who claims to work for Bethesda and has spoken for it Reddit in the past, stated, “We’re currently testing a fix and hope to have an update out next week.

"Of course, it’s still unclear at this time what form the fix will come in and what exactly it will achieve. While the problem will most likely be addressed through a new downloadable patch, we still don’t know whether it will boost the sound quality to that of the PS4 version, or simply restore it to the former uncompressed standard established by the 2011 edition of Skyrim. LasurArkinshade followed-up to that effect, asking,"

Is the team at Bethesda also aware of the massive difference in audio quality on voiceover and music between the PS4 version and the others? The voiceover and music audio in the PS4 version of the Special Edition is astronomically higher quality than even the original PC release of Skyrim, to the point where it almost seems like Bethesda intended to push out higher quality audio for the Special Edition but didn’t include those files in the PC/Xbox One versions, possibly by mistake or as an oversight. If not - I figure it’s best to ensure that it’s brought to the team’s attention to ensure that the Special Edition has the highest-quality audio possible.
"In some ways, this turn of events is a bit ironic, given that it was the PS3 version of the original Skyrim that repeatedly crashed and burned, with Bethesda still trying to fix issues months after it launched. This time, the PS4 version seems to be working as intended, at least in the audio department."

Quick question: After I install the Special Edition can I uninstall the old version or there can't be one without the other?

(Just asking for space reasons, since I installed on my much smaller ssd to get better performance)

The old and new one are independent totally.

Is anyone using any mods for the special edition or has nothing been developed yet (my search yielded nothing so far).

The only difference I see is that the grass on the terrain is rendered much better, and then there's that auto-focus in that when you look at an npc's face the background gets blurred. And the lighting is a bit better too.

But the colours are still quite washed out, though not as much as Skyrim original.
And the textures... ugh. Watching anything from nearby (a dead rabbit or a cow for example) looks like a toddler's crayon creation!

Ya, no more fake and forced shadows; no more .ini tweaking shadows that are either high resolution up close and terrible at a distance, or terrible up close but draw very far and kill performance.
And, there's very little performance hit for going Ultra/Ultra this time around.

I've said all I wanted to say. :) I look forward to your observations!

So much to say however the main observations have been :
  • Way more stable, with or without mods
  • Graphics took barely any work to make about as good as my Oldrim arrangement (minus some AO which can now be done with ENB, though I am skipping ENB because running at 96fps is right at the limit with my current SSE setup/plugins/mods/tweaks)
  • I've discovered Oldrim mods I never knew existed and am using their SSE versions, so +1 for discovery
There is something I've noticed concerning performance that bugs me. Any time I face a town (not necessarily when inside it), I get a significant fps drop.
Examples are :

  1. Standing at the southern Guardian stones and facing Riverwood, about 75fps
  2. Standing at the Valtheim towers (see screens below) facing towards Ivarstead (and or Riften which is quite a ways away), about 75fps
  3. Standing at Peak' Shadow Tower facing Falkreath, about 60fps

Not sure what to make of it, maybe some type of culling issue.

In world/map view, facing S/SE towards two towns 73fps

In world and map view, facing N/NE 96fps

Obviously staring at a mountain, is going to most likely be less taxing than staring towards an open area, however if I pan east, the frame rate jumps back up again. It's the same area, just not aimed at any towns.

Quite a few mods are coming through now - updated from their Oldrim versions to be SSE compatible/focused. There's also new mods going up daily. The key thing is that so many in-depth mods and popular mods relied on scripting i.e. SKSE(and in-game management via MCM) and since SKSE has no 64 bit version yet, either those specific mods are not SSE ready and/or not fully functioning.

I wait about three or four days now and check back. Some authors do mailing lists for their mods, allowing you to get notified when they update. I'd say the most important mailer to get on, would be any thing related to SKSE.

As for graphics, here are some things to assist you in sprucing it up over Vanilla as well as taking it towards a more ENB type feel, without using ENB or heavily relying on all the features of SweetFX/Reshade. Note that any time you have mods that do something similar, install and also load(where .esm/.esp is used) your preferred mod last.
This will result in having to overwrite files. Any exception to this rule of thumb, is mentioned below.

Also, use NMM to install (manually download and then Add Mod from File).

Performance

  • Ensure you have enabled performance mode in your graphics card panel, particularly with Nvidia. SSE suffers the same issue where it wasn't capable of forcing performance mode if you had an 'adaptive' type global setting enabled for your GPU.
  • Disabled Skyrim's VSync by amending the iPresentInterval=1 flag in your Skyrim.ini (documents\my games\Skyrim SSE) to a value of iPresentInterval=0; then enable Vsync (with triple buffering if you're using a single GPU only). Make sure it's full Vsync, not adaptive or fast variation.

General
  • SkyUI (put direct download link to version 2.2 from Skyrim, as known to work with SSE. Some features will be unavailable [such as tweaking it via SKSE/MCM)]. You will however get the full amended/updated UI consolidated layout, instead of the consolitis vanilla look)
  • SweetFX/Reshade using SMAA (default settings) and LUT (adjust to your taste. I used it to give a tiny bit of overall color to compensate for the washed out vanilla bitmap. My LUT settings were 0.150 and 0.100 respectively)
  • Enhanced Lighting
  • Darker Nights(includes real time adjustments for exterior and interior cells)[is compatible with Enhanced Lighting]
  • Vivid Weathers(also increases the LUT in ways that the Reshade does not, by adding another layer of deeper color to the rendered scene. It also means you won't need to use any type of tonemapping with SweetFX as it handles defogging, contrast and gamma accordingly)

Textures

Mesh and geometry

In terms of other mods to address sound, game play, perks, combat - there's definitely already a lot of available. My total active mod count is now ninety-four.
The only other thing I would suggest as a must have if you want to expand the fundamental play style of Skyrim, are the survival suite mods such as the following....

  • Campfire (warmth management - harvest wood, create campfires, make leather garments, bedrolls, tents and more. Followers will also use these items/structures)
  • Frostfall (warmth management - player and followers are subject to limited movement, damage and death from cold, being wet or hypothermia)
  • iNeed (sustanance management - use foods/liquids/sleep to limit potential penalties brough on by hunger/third/fatigue)

The authors of these are working on some other interesting mods which you can learn about here https://skyrimsurvival.com/
Click on Survival Mods at the top to learn more. Last Seed, Hunger in the North and Art of the Catch may come to SSE when finished.
