Purpose of GTX/EVGA 1070 apps?

Picked up a evga gtx 1070 sc last night, installed it. Worked fine just letting windows do the automatic drivers install.

I decided to install the nvidia app, and the evga oc app. Not sure what the purpose of these apps are ? If I am not interested in oc'ing the card, do I need the precision ocx app from evga? I think the msi afterburner app had better osd if you wanna see what is going on

Is the nvidia ge force experience just for driver updates? It pretty much only has options to run optimal settings for games, and update drivers.

I keep reading about controlling the lights, but there is no way to turn the led lights off in the geforce app, or the evga app. The options are there, but greyed out. Is there a way to turn these lights off? It is not a big deal, but it seems like a waste since my case is closed.

Also, the performace options seem to be missing from the nvidia control panel? I dont have "optimal" options. I dont even have a performance sections. Is that normal? I thought the 10 series cards all shared the same software.

Just uninstall the apps and you'll be fine. GeForce Experience is needed for driver updates.

Not needed but lets you know when a driver update is available and allows you to download and install through the software.

But GFE also does the game tuning as the OP mentions, and also allows for streaming/recording and even uploading to Youtube, Twitch, etc. from within the software. My oldest son uses it to stream his games, and it works very well.

GFE has an excellent (IMHO) algorithm that can make a very small file with pretty decent overall quality. The file size is the fraction of what Fraps puts out with negligible visible differences between them in most cases. This feature alone has proven GFE worthy to me, as it makes streaming and screenshots very easy for my boys without needing to run different software. I should also mention that there is very little in the way of a performance hit when recording his streams (systems that record in sig), which Fraps was noticable.

Not that the OP cares about these features, but I felt they were worth sharing.

biggest thing with precision OC X is overclocking but it also provides options for custom fan profiles and an On screen display for things like gpu load, and stat's while gaming. geforce experience isn't only for driver updates as it has things like shadow play which allows you to record game play and save it, also as well directly streaming to twitch or youtube. Other thing in GFE is the automatic game optmization that it can set game up with optimal settings for graphic's quality and fps.

One of your questions wasn't answered. Even though your case is closed, you dont want the LED lights on. Try the applet from NVIDIA that used to be in GFE2.0. I believe it allows you to turn off the lights in addition to the normal function of making multie adjustments, and to do the same thing every time until you change.
