Maybe this has been brought up before, maybe it hasn't, but has a "privileges" system ever been considered?

I know it wouldn't be simple by any means, but im starting to feel like it might be worth it, From getting 20 PM's in 10 minutes from some bananahead who keeps creating accounts, to the 100th poll about favorite Operating systems, to senseless Threads posts which seem to be in response to a totally different threads, to what seem to be once a month Chinese character filled posts , which almost feel like the Forum equivalent to picking up Your home phone to a Fax tone on the other end.

when I say privileges, i mean a way to remove the ease of creating accounts one after the other by trolls, and other nut jobs. I dont have any real ideas of how to implement, or other specifics, nor is that my reason for posting this, but I still want to know if Mods are considering it, or have tried it, or feel its a senseless waste of time, or an option that wouldnt be possible to put into action.

Loosely, what i think of, is a person signs up....then can do all the regular things like post in threads, thank, ignore , etc....but until the "probationary" period is over, they cannot create a thread, or PM other members, post items fs,etc. If any infraction occurs, or other members report them in excess, they are someway "penalized" either by having theyre accounts revoked, or suspended, etc. am i alone in thinking this by itself would cut down on general ridiculousness? maybe i am, i just thought, id put this out there, and what people think is what they think. im Not claiming its perfect, im not claiming im the first to think of it, im not claiming anything, im just thinking out loud, and hoping to end the common issue of Trolls, time wasters, and idiots.

The new account holders need PM for reasons. Maybe limited PMs Otherwise they will spam a thread. But I think making it harder to sigh up might work. Like answer a few questions, read the rules, valid e mail, anti bot stuff "are you a human" difficult password athough I hate that one.

Members are the lifeblood of any forum but sometimes it does more harm than good to have someone trolling the forum. One guy in particular recently created something like 16 accounts in just a few days and trolled the forum until he got each one banned. I think he was using a proxy to hide his IP address. For example when MSN had forums they would not permit you to post anything if using a proxy service. Basically once you were perma-banned you stayed banned unless you went to the trouble of calling your ISP to request an IP address change. That seemed to work for MSN pretty well.

I would think a more complex sign-up would be very appropriate. I wouldn't want to see too much new user restriction, but maybe have a limit on PMs, posts and new threads created by new users. I wouldn't want to get any more aggressive than that IMHO.

This is a tough damned if you do or don't kinda topic. The more restrictive this forum is, the more folks won't join that legitimately need help too. But not restrictive enough and we get spammed to hell.

But if we all do our part and report those spammers we do see, then the forum stays pretty clean even with repeat offenders. I can't really complain about how the current staff handles these issues nor the response time it takes in most cases. For that I applaud them because its easy to get overrun.

And maybe the TPU staff can voice their opinions here, if its getting unweildy to babysit offending members and spammers, maybe adding mitigation rules for new accounts would help. Not knowing what the TPU forum backend is even capable of we'll ultimately rely on W1z and whomever else can make such changes.

I'm glad to see this topic brought up though!

33 accounts :) There are currently some restrictions placed on new members, for example, if the IP address is located in a high spam area they cannot post for their first few without being approved by a Moderator (called a Moderation queue), this is specifically to stop Spam, there are also some restrictions placed upon new users with regards to selling. I think in all honesty there is some merit in perhaps extending the moderation queue to all new members for lets say their first (insert number) posts but in reality I doubt that it is practical, only because on any given day you may have 30 new users registering, if they all make just 2 posts each, most will be legit and they need help, if a moderator is not in the house for a couple of hours which does happen sometimes most would have given up possibly and not come back.

Do you find that makes it harder to follow a thread when you have people on ignore? I recall a member here getting annoyed because the person who started the thread was on his ignore list and he couldn't make out what people were referring too.

Then I guess they didn't want to ignore them? If I want to ignore someone I just ignore them no need to block everything, just ignore the part I don't agree with :) But I haven't had too many PM spams

Well with the notifications stating an ignored user posted in the thread and having the option to view their postings, that takes the confusion out of it IMHO. Maybe folks aren't used to seeing that option...so don't notice it. Though being bright blue should jump out a little bit.

Yeah with the notifications of a blocked users post, it makes it pretty damn easy. It takes quite a bit for me to want to block somebody anyway I generally only block a person if they are unpleasant or ignorant. I've also blocked a member because they seemed to feel they were incapable of being wrong.....

Blocking is all well and good but what I was more getting at with this thread was the users that rapidfire accounts. It happened quite recently a spam user Musta hit me with 50 private messages all within 15 minutes to 20 minutes ,it was pretty annoying

I suppose that's what had me thinking about this particular thread topic

also, for the Record, I feel its important to say that i feel that the Mods/Staff do a very good job of handling the Sh%tHe@ds that Spam, Troll, rapid fire accounts for no other reason than to annoy.....and, i can only imagine what it would be like without vigilant mods to keep an eye out, i just figured it might make theyre lives easier too.

50 PMs in 15-20mins?! Isn't there already a flood prevention/delay built into the PM system? When I would send out PMs to giveaway winners I'd get hit by that limit all the time.

After you reported the user, how long did it take for the member to be banned?

50 PMs in 15-20mins?! Isn't there already a flood prevention/delay built into the PM system? When I would send out PMs to giveaway winners I'd get hit by that limit all the time.

After you reported the user, how long did it take for the member to be banned?

didn't take long at all after I reported it, that's why I made that addition to my last post about the mods doing a good job. And yeah you're right I think there's 20 s wait time between posts for private messaging.

The problem was is that they banned him and he was back in 10 minutes under a new name that's what my point was with the original post somehow creating a probationary period or a limited freedom period To take the strain off of the mods

The funniest thing is is it was totally out of the blue I never communicated with this user to my knowledge he just started p.m. in me and wouldn't stop I actually took a screenshot of the posts and they were seconds between each other so it seemed like he was circumventing the control feature to stop spam private messages
they get more "ill come to Your House'ish" but im not going to include those ones...

That looks like one of the 33 accounts that the mods banned. I'm surprised he went after you and not me. I was calling his accounts out. Strange that he picked you to harass. I think he's gone for good now though.

I don't know about restricting access directly but, surely moderators have seen all kinds of behavior from problematic members that lends itself to being a pest. I suspect that some kind of numerical metric to measure douche baggery would help catch these situations. The problem then becomes: How do you make an automated process to quantify douche baggery and who sets the limits for how much is allowed?

If I didn't have a day job, I would love to tackle that one.

Why arrest i been banned yet. I Mean i spam and skam this forum like no one else with stupid and useless information and at times even misguide others, but no one is stopping me :p

The mods are just lazy

Alright joke a side, this forum is great and would be a shame to let it fall to be a heaven for trolle and other stupid cybervermin that makes good forums to a hell.

I dont know what to do, that can make trolls disappeare permanent. I Mean if one troll is banned, a new one would just come in his or her place sonner or latter any way.
