So let' concentrate this thread on the real issues, not the new posters who have legitimate questions that may have been asked before. :)

I agree but I did qualify my remark by indicating SIMPLE searches. Esoteric problems occur all the time and manifest themselves differently. Many don't bother to indicate what was tried first.

Hell, if they got a hold of sew333/litwicki24 and his dozen IDS that xenforo can't seem to find (and the members here can't pick his posts out of a lineup when it's blatantly obvious it's him) half the problem here would be gone.

Really, no automated process will take care of it. The issues you are coming up with are normal in forums. The staff needs to be on top of things more (lord knows there is plenty of them around)...but really WE as users see the douchebaggery first..as many mods as there are here, first, they can't see every post and rely on us to inform them via reported post.

Second, for whatever reason mods are assigned to certain sections at this site. So if you reach out to mod a or report a post, he(or who is on) may not be able to do anything about the issue as he/they do not have authority in that section...which not knowing a thing of why that was implemented, just seems like it doesn't work (sectioning off of moderation abilities) efficiently at all...give all your moderators the ability to moderate everything.

For each of the few litwicki's you identify, some of us have 34 x "HackerWithNoIP" plus a whole host of others so it's not quite as simple as that. I think the reason moderators are given forums each to moderate is because it allows them to focus rather than "skim" something like 200 active threads at a time, I do get your point though and there is some merit in it but Senior Mods can access all areas too although I appreciate there are a lot less of us.

I hear you. From my perspective, a tiny fraction of what you a do, I've been met with more 'I can't handle that it isn't my section' than I care to repeat. I see the merits in being responsible for a section, but NOT take way their ability to moderate in other sections. Moderation Silos/kingdoms within kingdoms is not a good idea with a forum this big. Breaking down those walls would allow for quicker response to a situation no matter who is on. A section mod can still be responsible for their section first, but should still be able to do work in other sections via reported post or PM.

For the most part, the staff here does tremendous work...but likely anything, can be improved...even if it's just low hanging fruit to start. :)

I guess this is a good place to openly discuss this. Roughly coordinating with the day of the trolls I was unable to access the site. Somehow, some way, I managed to undermine a few acts of moderation early in my time here. With exception of clarifying the source of friction my posts have been above reproach . Anyways, I decided to verify if the site was down and it was not. Few days later I accidentally clicked on a browser link to TPU and it opened right up.

Was I banned? Am I tantamount to low hanging fruit?

I will admit I crossed the line once in a thread and the next day in a thread title. The rising air was enough to question whether I felt there was a place for me or anyone else. Talk of making the membership process more stringent and less new user friendly aside. I'd be curious to see the figures on how many independent new accounts correspond in more than 25 posts. Equally important how many result in more than 25 per year. See where I'm going here, chat. Easily doubles the back end work but since there is an immovable link to all new forum posts on the front page...

You make a good point and it may be worth looking into the sections thing some more. For me I am paranoid these days, I IP check every new member I come across and even go through the members on line list to find newbie's to check to the point where it feels sometimes that I contribute less and less within the community (which is why I have stuck around for so long) and get bogged down with the bureaucracy which can at times be forum management.

Yeah, I've had that too. Most annoying when the OP asks a question about a problem that's vexing them, I give a gold plated answer and they just ignore it and similar answers to mine from others, instead going with all the other dross that's being posted in that thread. Even when I make a reminder post they ignore it. I stop bothering to help out people like that very quickly nowadays. I tend to see this mostly when they are reporting an infected computer or other glitch with it that's gonna take a lot of work to fix.

Flippin'eck!

I feel the same about giving advice and the noobs dob't listen, it was the same with fixing appliances, if I found nothing wrong or they werent using it properly they would try to find something else wrong with it and i'd have to lay the brunt end on them. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink.

I know that there are forum software plugins to help control spammers and time wasters and the damned banned. The better ones are cloud based so similar activity and IP addresses over at these other sites gets flagged up before they can do any damage. Presumably there's a fee for using these services.

For all we know TPU is using these and it's prudent for W1z not to let on what they are.
I even open sourced what i made after i got tired of all the spammers
https://xenforo.com/community/resources/tpu-detect-and-block-spam-registrations.2973/

There's more that's not available to public :D

Nope. All our conversations have been new PM's.

Each with a new title, we've exchanged many a PM....:toast:

The tally has gone up a bit since this morning, if i know us, we will send each other a firework gif or something on our 8,888 celebration.........:lovetpu:

When I ran a XF based forum the members actions were linked to a custom "reactions" mod. If they got an x amount of negative reactions they'd get auto-modded/restricted. The reaction bar, however would only be interactiable for users that were members for 60 days with 20+ legit posts (new member can be ranked with it but can't interact with the bar). This was a music forum so it was needed bad. Thing is the script isn't around anymore :( I also lost my copy of it :(

There's a fool on here now posting ridiculous threads, 7 so far in the past few minutes. What about making a limit to the number of threads a new member can make, especially within the first day (or first few days)? No reason a new member needs to make 7 threads the same day they sign up.

Spam such as this has been around since before I started being a mod 8 years ago. There's a bunch of filters in place but sometimes some gets through. When there's a lot of attacks happening, you see it more as you do now. Just report it and it's generally gone within minutes.
