An upgrade from a 7970

i would check if the 2 modern cards will work on your dated motherboard first. This was an issue for a user recently to do with a EUFI/ BIOS conflict. I cant find the thread to link it.

lol yea right, if the OP has the 1100T, that will bottleneck that gpu.

Yep I agree here, stick with what you have unless there's a good reason to replace it. That 7970's still a potent performer IMHO. Maybe take your funds and save up for a Zen build or buy some 2nd hand Intel parts and increase your system performance and thus reducing any GPU bottle necking you may have.

Of the two cards you're looking at, I would get a non-reference 480 8GB.
Personally, though, I would hold onto the 7970 until you can build a more modern system, maybe wait for AMD Zen and Vega to release next year and build then? Even if you end up going Intel and/or nVidia, the release of Zen and Vega should subsequently cause more competitive pricing.

My HD7970 died so i had to buy a new card and after much thought i went with a sapphire RX480 and i am more than happy with it performance wise, I have been running some older games like Dirt 3 at 4k 60fps max settings 2xmsaa, Grid AutoSport 4k 60fps with shadows on high no AA and the rest maxed out.

Between the 2 cards I would get a rx480. I personally would pick an xfx rx480 gtr as those seem to be decent overclockers. I have heard/read multiple reports of those cards easily hitting 1450Mhz, also the pcb is better than the sapphire nitro.

PCB doesn't matter between the MSI, Sapphire, XFX or a couple others on air/water. The Nitro can hit the same clocks and is 4 inches shorter...

My brother has that one in his build and it has no issues with 1410 for games. They only allow +20% power limit, but it runs cooler, quieter and more efficiently than my Sapphire cards.

That's what I'd do, Vega & Zen are just around the corner Sacrifice a setting or 2 to keep you moving in the meantime.

Went from AMD 7950 OC to gtx 1070. shit just aint the same. now my 120/144hz monitor stay's at 100+ fps on on all games at utltra. i had to eat noodles the whole month, but when new month came. i regregeted nothing ! big ass Palit Gtx 1070 super Jetstream just gets things done. hope you can save for that and and you will not be dissepointed.
