Hi

I've just got an acer xf270hu monitor and I can't get it to run at 144hz. I'm using the DVI-D dual link cable that came with it, and I'm unable to select anything over 60hz even at 1080p.

I know I need a displayport cable to run @ 1440p 144hz (which I'll be getting soon)

I'm running a Powercolor 7970 V3 so what gives?

I tried installing the driver (.inf file) from acer's website however it isn't digitally signed so wont install. The monitor is just coming up as "generic PnP" monitor.

You've got a 7970 which is quite old. I wonder if that's the limitation?

I think your 7970 is too old to get it up

Just installed monitor driver and still no luck. Maybe it's time for an upgrade.

I get your frustration buddy. I say check out the full specs of you card on AMD's website and see if that refresh is supported at that resolution. It should manage 1080p at 120Hz and maybe 144Hz. Try this and see if it works. If yes, then it's pretty likely that it can't do 1440p at 144Hz even without checking AMD's website. If it can, then perhaps there's hope that this can be sorted out - but check the website.

Regardless though, it won't be able to render modern games at 144fps, negating that high refresh somewhat. Yes, that high refresh still helps as frame drops tend to have smaller judders up to a point.

Finally, if you do upgrade your card, I recommend going NVIDIA and the GTX 1080 if you can. I've got the Palit three slot one reviewed here on TPU and it's fantastic. Your CPU certainly has enough processing power to run modern games at high fps - better than my 2700K at stock for sure!

Hello my good sir.

Would you perhaps be interested in purchasing a set of msi gaming 970s off me? I'll even throw in an sli bridge that costs £30

I dare say they would run your new monitor quite spiffingly

You will not run most modern games at 1440p with all the bells and whistles on, at a consistent 144fps/144hz. 120hz would also be out of reach.
96fps/96hz is your target and a single GTX 1080 will just about do it.

I also do not believe a 7970 is incapable of 144hz. What cable /connector are you using?

Have you trawled through all the settings on the panel itself? Sometimes the menus are kinda hard to navigate IME, you might have missed a frequency setting somewhere

Oh dude! Great that displayport fixed it, but you've really short-changed yourself with that graphics card. :ohwell:

With a 1060 or better, 1070 it'll likely render faster than 144fps anyway, giving you all the advantages I described above. It's way better than the card dropping frames and having the monitor compensate with its variable refresh rate. This goes for G-Sync too.

Since you're from the UK, why don't you buy an NVIDIA card as well (the more high end the better) then compare the two (must try NVIDIA FastSync) and see which you like better? You can then return the other one under the Distance Selling Regulations. It's not too late to try this.

Money.. A G-sync display costs more than freesync because of the proprietary nvidia chip inside the monitor. I'll be getting vega when that drops most likely anyway

No, you don't understand. I'm not saying to get a G-Sync monitor. Just that the argument for keeping the framerate high is better than for triggering a variable refresh rate monitor, which goes for either brand.

Seriously, get the NVIDIA card too (TPU can help you choose) and then compare. You'll see that having a really high framerate (above the monitor's refresh) with FastSync gives you better results, namely super smooth animation with really low lag.

This thread kills me. OP asked about an issue with a monitor and an older card, first thing up someone tries to sell him not ONE but TWO old cards ( that when in SLI consume more power, and are only slightly faster than a 480 if at all) that would also require a different and more expensive monitor, someone else shows up and tells OP to trade the monitor back for a more expensive monitor and a slightly higher priced competitive card setup as "electricity costs money". OP states to have issues fixed and is happy for now and wants to purchase a 480 (in the US they can be found as cheap as $179) and then gets told how a 1060 is still better (by like 5%) or that OP should spend more to get a 1070, because bettar.... and still yet no one has asked what OP is playing at what settings.

Doesn't really matter. You can't beat FastSync for immersive gameplay in fps games and only NVIDIA has this feature at the moment. He just has to tweak the settings until the card is rendering nice and fast, that's all. A 1070 or 1080 which he said he might be able to stretch to makes this argument even stronger.

Tit for tat on price and performance.

i suppose the lesson is( among several) that if every post was the right answer, threads would be REALLY short , huh?

You will not run most modern games at 1440p with all the bells and whistles on, at a consistent 144fps/144hz. 120hz would also be out of reach.
96fps/96hz is your target and a single GTX 1080 will just about do it.

I also do not believe a 7970 is incapable of 144hz. What cable /connector are you using?
When I ran 7970s, 82Hz was the highest refresh rate I could get to run on DVI at 1440p. A DisplayPort cable upped that to 96Hz, but just barely. FWIW, two 7970s kept most of my games capped at 96FPS with VSync even with details turned up medium-high, so a single 7970 should be able to hit that refresh rate with lowered detail settings. At 1080p, a single 7970 on DVI would run 120Hz with ease for me, but the monitor refused to go higher than 120Hz.
It's also worth mentioning that both monitors I'm talking about were overclocked to reach those refresh rates. Having said that, though, there did seem to be a bandwidth issue. While in CFX, I had to use both CrossFire bridges or the refresh rate capped at something like 72Hz at 1440p.
An RX480 8GB would have trouble sustaining 144FPS at 1440p with everything cranked, but that's not the point of adaptive sync. Do you know what the adaptive range is for that monitor? I would guess it's something like 45-144Hz. As long as your card can keep framerates in the specified range, you should be fine.

I don't think it's that because my HD7950 was perfectly happy with my ASUS 144Hz monitor. But only with DisplayPort. With Dual Link DVI it was behaving funky and with normal DVI it just didn't work at 144Hz.
+1 imo, regarding cabling

Also be aware that there are quite some very dodgy DisplayPort cables, especially those claiming to be of specific version and they really aren't. No need to go with stupendously overpriced cables like Monster, but make sure you take a quality one from reliable source. Cables don't get old and outdated so spending few more € on them doesn't hurt if that makes them more reliable.
