Strange things going on.

My x58 PC today for the first time ever rebooted for no reason, no Windows shutdown, just hard rebooted. Also not under any kind of load or stress, has been on for over a week.

The AMD AM3 rig i gave my dad when he plays a game also hard reboots.

Any OC?
Over time some components are not able to handle the same overclock, as on the day they were bought. In most cases RAM is at fault.
That's why I ran my x58 rig at moderate 3.6GHz (x5650) and downvolted to the minimum. And the same for RAM - just a slight overclock with some compensation for timings.
I know my old-old RAM caused similar problems after 6 years of service - random reboots or even BSOD on Youtube or Pornhub ))

This XEON is at 4.2ghz right now as it was at 4.3 but rendering.. heat output was a little too much.

This is very possible, my PSU is overkill... and the PSU in the AM3 rig is more than adequate, the 580 is undervolted at GTX 480 clock speeds on the AMD system.

Well, that's your answer.
It is also worth checking 12V rail sag when loaded. On some boards (khm... ASUS, AsRock) if it falls below 11.5V - your PC will most likely reboot.
I've only seen it once, when attempted to test an i3 with a GTX770 on my old 400W PSU, but apparently it is a common problem even on more adequate power supplies due to wear.

This is out of character for this X58 machine it's been stable and reliable in whatever i throw at it, out of the blue it randomly rebooted for no reason when it was not under load.

I once had an 8350 spuriously die on me. Had it for about 2 years, then out of nowhere it was suddenly unstable af and had to be RMAd.

That said, might be worth a fresh install of Windows if your Microsoft Security Essentials is borked.

working ok this morning hint i'm posting from it

Good thing I can undervolt and still get a small OC.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed in my thread today, i will be monitoring my system closely and will watch for the issue again if it even happens again.

If so i will look at voltage and clock speed on the CPU, it could also be a RAM timing issue.


A side note, Windows Defender is now back up and running, it seemed to have repaired itself.

lost a 1 TB disk with 800 gig on it S.M.A.R.T failure

I remember reading something somewhere about a some hack zero day or something else that had the sole purpose of forcing a reboot, but that was a couple years ago and was part of a rootkit.
