Playing H1z1 king of the kill. I was using about 8 gb just for the game with windows and everything i had running in the background it was between 11-12gb in total RAM usage

After getting 16GB I found gtav and fallout 4 are even smoother than before. Almost no fps drops.
So yeah, they ran fine with 8GB, and the system managed to keep it under or close to 7GB usage.
But now it's better since the os has more ram for background tasks that doesn't need to be paged or cut off.

So I agree with the topic title which recommends more ram.
Whatever a person needs or think he/she needs is an entirely different matter though.

Good advice op. Although max settings usually do require a beefy cpu/gpu combo also.

Uuh what a shitstorm.

GTA is a title where I've seen biggest RAM consumtion ever. Almost thinking it is a leak actually. Long gaming sessions go past 12GB even without mods.

So whatever he has a point. Biggest VRAM hog was Shadow of Mordor. Cannot explain really why.

Both playthroughs of Dishonored 2 have taken my system well north of 12 GB RAM. Since with Steam open and idle I sit at 3.4GB used, it's obvious the game is using ALOT.

Remember windows uses more when more is available. My big amd rig uses 8gb at idle with a clean windows 7 install. It also has 64GB of ram to play with though

Any gaming computer I build today, and in the past year even, I've put 16GB of RAM in. Why? Because RAM is cheap

You should add to your builds 50KG of bananas, they are cheap too

Anyways, my point is that we shouldn't generalize it to "gaming rig -16GB of RAM". It's wrong. Every computer should be built based on users needs and not some made up standards.

My laptop has only 4GB of RAM and i play some light games on it without any issues. RAM is cheap, i should buy at least another 4 gigs, right? No, because I'm fine with 4 gigs.

My gaming rig has 8 gigabytes of RAM and I'm not going to add nore of it until i feel the need. Not because it's expensive or cheap for me. It works just fine with 8 gigs.

Definitely, new gaming systems should be on 16 GB. Staying clear of the pagefile is good for performance. However they only need it in the top segment, ie 120 fps, or 1440p and up, or both.

as you can see in the picture below ram usage almost 10 GB in GTA V with these awesome graphics mods :
- VisualV 1.0.290
- NaturalVision Photorealistic GTA V 1.4 (1080p or 1440p - Normal Version)
- L.A. Roads [OIV] 2.0
- L.A. Roads Patch 2.7 [OIV]
- L.A Vegetation OIV Installer 2.0
- Real Freeway Signs 0.2.1

Graphics card memory usage = 5051 MB
RAM usage = 9811 MB

what im trying to say if you have a good graphics card with a good cpu ( for example i5-6600k or i7-6700k + GTX 1070 8GB ) , if you like to play games at max settings with graphics mods
i think you need 16GB of ram to get the best and all performance of your graphics and cpu .

i remember when i was searching before i build my gaming PC
many channels on youtube saying 8GB is enough

in my opinion its not enough IF you use graphics mods , because it will maybe bottleneck your cpu and gpu a little bit , and also for peace of mind

but its just my opinion , not all games or mods use lot of ram .

Completely agree here, unless the gamer only plays Sprite games or LoL or WoW.
When VRAM is exceeded, having not enough system RAM causes stuttering.
Also, it's cheaper to buy RAM in sets, than a stick at a time.

Nope. Butterfield 1 is a great example. With 8GB of RAM available it runs just as smooth as with 16GB. Tested last night myself. Literally, no difference. Although my OS and BF1 are installed on SSD's.

Space engineers with worlds was easily 13GB on my old rig. I think that was the only time I actually used my 16GB RAM (bought in 2011). My friends with 8GB had slideshows.

There is no reason to cheap out on amount of RAM nowadays. You never fall short until the day you do. I have a 2x16GB kit now, with two slots free if needed.

From personal experience, I've been running 8GB and still do, and I do notice the occasional stutter when the pagefile size is considerable, but I've only started noticing it since running 120 hz monitor @ 1080p. At 60 fps, there is much more leeway to feed data between frames.

Ok, I misunderstood you. I thought you were saying the only thing that would take someone over 8GB RAM is 120fps or 1440p and above, etc. Since I misunderstood you I was just pointing out that at 1080p and 60fps, I have had need of more than 8.

Oh yes it certainly does with fallout 4. I run that game in 1440p vsr and vsync enabled. Had some frequent drops from that 60 fps, albeit at custom ultra settings.
After getting 16GB that smoothened out and keeps it at 60fps with no or very few drops depending on scene/location.
I play gtav also at 60fps and it does play smoother on my rig with 16Gb ram.

But no one "needs" 16GB unless the game specifically asks for it, or recommends it.
Both afformentioned titles played fine with 8GB also.
And after all, one can always lower ingame settings to keep high fps with 8GB ram. I'm happy with 16GB though and wont go for less in future builds.
