I stumbled across this recently and it looks like a hardware based implementation of adblock extensions or even services like openDNS.

Still it seems like a really sweet project, though I can't say what its effectiveness really is.

I thought about making an IDS, especially since my shuttle uses realtek NICs and suricata doesnt like them. but im not certain the PI would be fast enough. maybe my 3 would. I havent figured out a good way to make performance metrics though.

Well I decided to do a test run!

For this I disabled ublock origin in my browser all together.

I manually switched between my local pi-hole DNS server running on a rasp Pi 1 B+

The PI is running Raspian PIXEL based off of Debian Jesse Build 11-25-16

I overclocked it via the PI configuration to 1Ghz from 700mhz.

I disabled the GUI and enabled CLI mode.

I enabled wait on network before login

I enabled SSH

The first is msn.com via googles public DNS server 8.8.8.8

The next is msn.com using Pi-Hole running on my raspberry pi on a local IP address.

I then tried speedtest.net using googles public DNS server at 8.8.8.8

I then went to speedtest.net using my local Pi-Hole DNS server.

As you can see you can see the URLs affected and you can also see the machine on your network doing the traffic.

Last post for tonight. It does do a pretty good job at blocking ads and I have not seen it trigger yet. (even on tweaktown) and the DNS response time is still really great. No major lag on my end YMMV though.

I do admit things like ublock seem to grab a bit more, I'm not sure if thats them blocking a little more or also doing the html element magic to make the page look better.

It does allow customized options as well. It also apparently sets up a cron job to keep the list updated. I might decide to run it a bit to see how well it does!
