Is the i7 4790k a good CPU

I like my 4790K. It chews through anything that I throw at it without any problem.
Heat has never been an issue with a mild overclock. I'm using a Silverstone Tundra TD02 to cool it.

I have the 4770k (redhead stepchild) and it's beasting. Went from 4.2 with an Evo cooler to a h60 and 4.5. Guess what, I can't tell a difference because nothing is really straining it regardless. If you're gaming like me, it'll probably be years before its pushed

DDR4 > DDR3 mem bandwidth, that's the primary difference. And high quality DDR3 fetches a premium ...rightfully so.

It's anything but, however it depends what your wanting to do with it as different processors for different categories.

Need more details of how you ask that question..what are your goals for using a 4790K? I have two and love em. Great chips. One runs stock in my home server and allows me to run 5 VM's in hyper-V quite easily without struggle. 24GB of DDR3, mixed RAID and non-RAID data storage solutions, etc. The other is in my main gaming rig OC'd to 4.8GHz for now...been a beast as well. Does all sorts of things, but on a less-reliable basis though has been a dead stable PC thus far, excellent gaming rig, which I do a LOT of multitasking, gaming, encoding, lab work, etc. on. Both are listed in my system specs to the left.

• What are your plans?
• Is there a reason you need or want 8 threads?
• What made you ask about the 4790k and not the 4690k or newer 6600k and 6700k?
• Do you already have the Z87/Z97 or Haswell/DC compatible platform or plan on buying parts around the CPU?

You ask too vague a question to demand no "single word answers" imho.

Love mine. Its at 4.4 Ghz (Gigabyte motherboard's auto overclock setting). Much better in recent gaming like Fallout 4 than any other CPU I've had lately (including an i5-4690k).

4790K's turbo to 4.4 @ stock configurations...make sure you're not giving it any more voltage than necessary. If anything you might try to undervolt if you're running stock clocks and turbos. I have been able to shave a little off each...I also notice a measurable drop in power consumption at idle changing the min/max cache multi's to 8X and 40X. I dropped approx 8-12W on my UPS with my server running a 4790K stock (mild undervolt).

Troll. Resurrecting a thread and calling yourself Lazarus, (without the 'L') clearly shows motive of nothing other than being an ass.

There are clear reasons to reply 'google it' in instances where proof of capability can be found in a range of reviews. Further, asking opinions in a tech forum can often lead to brand bashing and fanboyism.
If the OP had asked, what's the best CPU for rendering or what's the best low noise cooler, then a forum is more helpful. But binaries like "is product A good or bad?" can be answered through product review analysis.
